How Sutton Stromart Used A Technical Software To Rate
Special Core Radiators

Background
Sutton Stromart Limited, a complete radiator manufacturing company with Head Office and Manufacturing
located in Toronto, Canada. For over 30 years Sutton has manufactured high-quality radiators and cooling
systems for various applications including power generation, compressors, pumps, oil field equipment, steam
condensers and process cooling applications.

Source: http://www.mclgroup.ca/tactus.html

The Challenge
Sutton Stromart Limited wanted to have a modern and accurate design software tool to allow them to add
additional product styles to their current offering which utilizes round tube core configuration. The scope of
work was to provide a design program to utilize oval brass tubes ( in line or staggered) and flat copper fins
( could be louvered or dimpled), and required the software to be updatable and respond to present and future
design needs. They required the ability to change tube size/tube count/number of rows/fin count/louver or
dimple fin etc.
UNILABs Solution and Benefits for SUTTON STROMART LIMITED
By providing us with multiple examples of heat load transfer requirements we have delivered a customized
version of Radiator Suite and following are the main features we have added:

We had to change and update our standard regular Radiator Suite software to suit to the customer needs,
for the geometry details we inserted an easy way to differentiate their main geometries with their names,
and the relative drawings so that they could know whether the used fin was louvered or not.

We added the calculation of the circuits in regards to the number of rows and passages

We have inserted the Brass material so that the results would be in line to their requests

We were able to modify the calculation engine and interface to provide Different Input Variable System (1)
Capacity and Coolant Temp In, (2) Capacity and Coolant Temp Out, (3) Coolant temp In Coolant Temp
Out), altitude input field, total And Excess surface Calculation, Reduction of Fluid List so that they can se-
lect the ones they work the most with Connection Calculations, ACFM calculation.

Custom Printout so that customer could have all important data on the printout, and we went even beyond
providing the possibility to export in Excel format.

We fine-tuned the software results, to calibrate our calculation model and give an accurate and reliable
software to the customer.

In order to accomplish the above points, we were in contact with Sutton Company Team that promptly gave
us feedback and explanations, so that we were able to work and deliver a Turn Key project to Design Special
Core Radiator on a win-win cooperation base.
Advanced Meat Refrigeration System meets UNILAB UNIT SELECTOR
Our long-term collaboration with INTERSAM enters a new phase

Background
INTERSAM is all about quality. The company was founded at the beginning of 1995 by professionals with ex-
tensive knowledge and experience in the air conditioning and refrigeration fields. INTERSAM manufactures
coils for air conditioning and refrigeration units, along with coolers and condensers. They have a wide range
of models, easily customizable to fit the needs of each individual installation. INTERSAM uses only raw mate-
rials of the highest quality, and its production process uses only the latest cutting-edge technologies. These
new technologies combined with highly qualified personnel ensure that INTERSAM consistently delivers top
quality products.

The Challenge
INTERSAM needed a flexible software that would allow their sales representatives to quickly select and esti-
mate the most appropriate unit for each installation in an all-in-one environment.

Furthermore, this software needed to reflect INTERSAMs branding, featuring their company colors, print out
layouts and pricing model. Since INTERSAMs catalogue is quite extensive, the software was required to be
quick at calculating thousands of units simultaneously and able to adapt to the introduction of new technol-
ogies into INTERSAMs range, such as the Adiabatic System.
UNILABs Solution and Benefits for INTERSAM
To provide INTERSAM with all of this, UNILAB chose UNIT SELECTOR, an advanced Electronic Catalogue
software combining a fast and reliable calculation engine with cutting-edge tools for the management of the
units database. It allows INTERSAMs Sales Representatives to select unit coolers, air coolers, remote con-
densers and dry coolers just by providing a few details of the customers requirements. Furthermore, UNITS
SELECTORs print out system is fully multilingual, which allows INTERSAM to think globally and provide busi-
ness proposals translated into multiple languages.

In the course of our longstanding collaboration, UNILAB and INTERSAM have worked side by side to improve
Units Selector with a wide range of new functionalities, such as a special Adiabatic System Simulation tool
that features both pack and nozzle humidification. All the units in the software database can be easily and
independently managed by INTERSAM. They feature UNIT SELECTOR on their corporate website, where cus-
tomers and sales representatives can download it and request an activation code from INTERSAM.

Unilab helps an Innovative Polish Regenerative Heat Exchanger Manufacturer
Advanced Custom Selection Software developed for BARBOR

Background
BARBOR Sp. z o.o. is an innovative heat
exchangers manufacturer from Pszczlki,
Poland, that we met at MCE Mostra Con-
vegno Expoconfrot 2016.

Their production is focused on high-quality

Heat Exchangers, Dampers and Filter for
the Industry, Business and Home markets.
Born in 2007, BARBOR can count on a
6000 m2 production facility, which allows
them to meet the expectations of custom-
ers throughout the whole Europe.

One of their most important products is

the SUPERBLOCK regenerative heat ex-
changer. This technology ensures full utili-
sation of the air flow surface. SUPERB-
LOCK can obtain the highest level of heat
recovery, of up to 95%.

During operation in the summer season,

the SUPERBLOCK as the original design of
regenerative heat exchanger achieves a
very high level of cooling recovery from
exhaust air.

The Challenge
To increase sales of SUPERBLOCK heat exchangers, BARBOR needed a customized calculation software that
could:

simulate the operation of these heat exchangers at any condition,

print a neat technical page to be included in the final offer.

But most of all, the calculation results were supposed to be reliable: SUPERBLOCK heat exchangers are usu-
ally the mission-critical part of the whole Air Handling Unit design.
UNILABs Solution and Benefits for BARBOR
UNILABs approach, in the case of Custom Software, consists of many phases, of which the first it the analy-
sis of the Customers Requirements, which results are then stated in a Project Specification document that is
shared with the Customer.

This document shows how UNILAB will accomplish with the Customers Requirements and which steps are
required.

After the analysis of BARBORs Requirements, UNILABs Engineering Department studied and developed a
mathematical model that was able to simulate BARBORs regenerative heat exchangers at any thermodynam-
ic conditions both sides.

Then UNILABs Production Department developed a Customized Software on top of this mathematical model,
that was able to receive the user input, process it and produce a technical datasheet according to BARBORs
layout and brand style.

The software has been completed then with activation and a key generator, allowing BARBOR to distribute its
setup to their customers and extend their software activation up to a specific date.

Benefits for BARBOR includes the possibility to give their Customers selection software that can simulate SU-
PERBLOCK models at any thermodynamic condition, which is an extremely valuable marketing tool that
meets both with BARBORs branding and mission.

At the same time, it reduces BARBORs Technical Departments workload, as their Customers are doing cal-
culations and offers for themselves.

Finally, they can set an expiration date for each Customer, so that they are in control of their sales network.

Innumerable faces to suit combined radiators. The calculation of water-air-oil
combined radiators.
Automotive builders know very well how easy it is to produce innovative
radiator exchangers. Often, the building of a new application precedes the
heat transfer analysis. Unilab s tailor-made design software, takes this into
account, allowing the combination of three fluids in the same exchanger.

Background
IRA RADIATORI is an Italian builder of radiators for various typologies of applications, in particular those re-
quired for the industrial, agricultural and automotive markets. They build a wide range of radiator heat ex-
changers. IRA RADIATORI and UNILAB share many features. Both companies have been operating since the
eighties, while demonstrating constant technological evolution. Common denominators are produce well
and quickly, with high-quality a top priority. The first meeting was held in October, 2015.

The Challenge
In their portfolio, they offer combined radiators which involve the assembly of different parts, requiring the
passage of three fluids (water, air, oil) in the same exchanger. IRA RADIATORI was looking for a design soft-
ware for that specific range. Generally speaking, the passage of two fluids is considered ordinary administra-
tion as well. The real challenge was to design a software capable of handling three separated gas flows im-
pelling on the same heat exchanger. No other companies had issued that challenge before. However, Unilab
thinks outside the box. With our engineering skills in mind, we grabbed the challenge without hesitation.

UNILABs Solution and Benefits for IRA RADIATORI

Here at Unilab, we have a specific design software, named RADIATOR SUITE, for the calculation of radiators.
RADIATOR SUITE includes three modules, allowing the calculation of Tube&Fin, Plate&Fin and CAC Core Ass-
ly. In a technical meeting held at the IRA RADIATORI headquarters, IRAs CEO proudly showed us a prototype
of a combined radiator, asking Can we design this using your software?. We realized that the existing soft-
ware would not meet the clients requirements completely. Some changes were necessary in the existing ar-
chitecture, to insert the specific mathematical model.

All in all, the project took about 160 hours. It completely satisfies the
Clients vision, including for the branded printouts.

The essential element which distinguished this win-win experience

was the strong cooperation with the client, supported by mutual
meetings in-house, a clear definition of the target and detailed expla-
nations shared with their qualified Technical Staff.

Hybrid HVAC Solution: the smart formula for heat recovery technology
Fresh air is the main target. E-conomizer units
are the choice, an innovative range of units, creat-
ed by DAMVENT, what grants fresh air at every
conditions. DAMVENT is a significant example of
European company that recognized the importance
of hybrid solutions.

Background
DAMVENT is an avant-garde Bulgarian company, specialized in production of highest/premium class energy-
efficient/saving solutions for ventilation and conditioning. They made their first steps in 90. In 2005, the first
prototype Max.E, was introduced at the International Technical Fair Plovdiv. The company moved totally
from production of Classic AHUs to production of complex solutions: another relevant example of prob-
lem solving solution. First connections with Unilab took origin in 2005, which get stronger in the course of the
time. In 2010, Unilab developed DV_Select, the smart solution, as quoting Damvents words, the most im-
portant tool for every designer/consultant.

The Challenge
To face global financial crisis, the management decided to focus all efforts to the development of hybrid so-
lutions, such as e-conomizers type Max.e, Max.e Mini and Max.e pool. Hybrid solutions are recommended
for typical projects that include cinemas, theaters, discos, restaurants, museums, casinos, banks, hotels, air-
ports, office buildings, shopping malls, hospitals and production areas. With "2 stage thermodynamic heat
recovery technology", these units allow the recovering up to 100% of the extract heat/cool/humidity. They are
designed to maintain the indoor climate whenever 100% fresh air is needed. DAMVENT needed an user-
friendly selection software which help their staff for the simulation and calculation of these units. Variable
temperatures can be analyzed & managed by offering different ranges of e-conomizers. The sense of timing
was a relevant element, to reduce lead time and face the market promptly. Outsourcing was the logical an-
swer.

DAMVENT clearly highlighted the most important features, to be included in the turnkey software:

ability to evolve very quickly, making possible to change/include new ranges of models with rapidity.

Ability to consider winter/summer calculations, with the possibility to generate data & drawings printouts,
exportable in PDF format

Enabled to show the relevant thermodynamic parameters, such as total cooling/heating capacity (kW),
supply air temperature, total power input, COP/EER, Specific Fan Power, refrigerant type, unit power supply,
sound pressure level

Ability to reproduce the air-treatment process in the Mollier diagram

User-friendly interface (with catching masks, useful reports, drawings)

UNILABs Solution and Benefits for DAMVENT
We created a flexible customized software, in order to satisfy what the Client was really looking for. Once
DAMVENT has finally approved the graphical interface, we implemented a simplified wizard for the manage-
ment of the technical data. We worked strictly with R&D Manager Deyan Damyanov. The continuous brain-
storming with him, sharing ideas about how to make the software user-friendly, some guidelines about how
to layout its customized printouts, was essential for the final result. We provided to DAMVENT a handy tool
for the management of activation codes, needed for the Sales Department.

From the beginning till nowadays, UNILAB has been working on 3 consecutive versions of the software, and
recently provided an On-Line, cloud based version- DV_Select Online. Next activities involved about a grad-
ual enhancement of the software plus the integration of additional typologies. Currently DV_Select 3.1 in-
cludes the following models: Max.e3, Max.e2, Max.e mini, Max.e3 pool, Max.e3 Gulf.

quick and efficient creation of an air handling unit offer together with the component technical selection
and engineering data in an all-in-one air handling unit design and engineering tool, where the full Air Options
production range was quickly accessible for selection & design. One of many requirements was that the soft-
ware must have the ability to automatically select the required air handling unit range & model after the inser-
tion of a minimum amount of input data. The user must then be able to add any air handling unit component
or section to the project, estimate the final price, offer a discount, and then print a detailed offer that would
be sent to the client.
UNILABs Solution and Benefits for AIR OPTION
Unilab provided Air Options with UNILAB SMART-AIR, an advanced soft-
ware package designed for the selection, estimation and
engineering of Air Handling Units. In SMART-AIR, the coil
selection & calculation is carried out using our top-notch
