A DOZEN GOOD REASONS TO CHOOSE A FOSTER WHEELER TERRACE-WALL COKER HEATER

Longer run-Lengths, reliability, flexibility, operating simplicity, and overall cost effectiveness

1. Our Terrace-Wall design incorporates independent pass firing and flow control. Each pass has its own firebox
providing 100% radiant coil isolation required for flexible operation, for turndown and on-line spalling, and maximum
run length. Other double-fired designs incorporate multiple passes into each firebox leading to imbalances between
passes, lost capacity during on-line spalling, and shorter run lengths.

2. The Terrace-Wall design incorporates unique sloped firing walls and a large quantity of low heat release burners to
provide efficient, reliable and controlled heat transfer to the radiant coil. Lower cost designs use fewer burners
resulting in uneven flux profiles along the tubes and increased local coking rates.

3. In our heaters, burner flames adhere to the sloped firing walls providing unmatched heat flux uniformity, flame
stability, and flue gas circulation pattern predictability. These features virtually eliminate any possibility of flame
impingement on the radiant coil, resulting in fewer tube failures and shutdowns as compared to other designs.

4. Terrace-Wall coker heaters are designed for high in-tube velocities and high pressure drop. This leads to lower
inside film temperatures and reduced coking tendency. This feature results in superior performance when
processing difficult heavy feed stocks.

5. Our robust heater design can hold up to more aggressive on-line spalling than our competitors heaters. As a result,
Terrace-Wall coker heaters often are able to return to clean coil temperatures after spalling allowing for longer runs
between spalls.

6. Foster Wheelers design includes cast radiant return bends with a heavy back wall to counter erosion during decoking
resulting in longer overall coil life. Competitor designs incorporate wrought return bends, often with flow areas
smaller than that of the coil, which can accelerate erosion by locally increasing fluid velocity.

7. Our radiant coil support system utilizes bottom-supported stanchions with replaceable tube rungs. The upward
growth of our tube support design assures constant contact of the tube to the support. Although we have had no
failures, our design also allows for rung replacement without removing the radiant coil. Other designs use cheaper
plate-type radiant supports which lose contact with tubes as they grow downward, are prone to failure, and can even
require the entire radiant coil to be removed for tube support replacement.

8. Our heater design includes header boxes for direct access to plug headers or return bends. This feature extends fitting
life by lowering fitting operating temperatures and allows for easy maintenance access. Competitor designs locate
return bends within the firebox resulting in shortened fitting life and time consuming maintenance of coils in the
event a pass becomes coked.

9. Our process coil utilizes a single uniform design temperature throughout. In other designs, a graduated design metal
temperature is used resulting in limited run times. A 50F increase in the coil design temperature can result in a run
length increase of one month between online spalls.

10. Our Terrace-Wall design is well suited to a high degree of shop modularization, typically requiring no field welds at
site, thereby maximizing fabrication quality and saving expensive field time and labor.

11. Due to the severe operating conditions required for coker heaters, Foster Wheeler always requires the use of cast
iron recuperative air preheaters. While plate-type recuperative air preheaters may be acceptable for less severe
applications, they typically have a life time of only 5-10 years in coker heater service.

12. Foster Wheeler continues to improve on our Terrace-Wall Coker Technology including the development of new
heater designs which can facilitate mechanical pigging of individual passes while other passes remain online.
