Track Notes
First things first dont be too scared by the 11/8 time signature! All time signatures are made from accented (strong)
beats, which are split into two or three 8th notes. These are called simple and compound meters. A good example of a
simple meter is our old friend 4/4, which has four beats, each split into two 8th notes (1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &). For a compound
meter, look at 6/8 this is usually played with two strong beats, each split into three 8th notes (1 & a 2 & a).

Now, 11/8 belongs in a separate category of irregular meters. The principle is the same, with strong beats split into two
or three 8th notes, but with irregular meters you can have groups of two and three mixed together. There are many ways
of interpreting 11/8, but in this track it works like this

1&a2&a3&a4&1&a2&a3&a4&

See the pattern? Its a bit like playing blues in 12/8 time (four groups of three) but with the last 8th note missing like
blues with a limp! So, what else? This track is in C minor and Guthrie most sticks to the Dorian mode (C D Eb F G A Bb)
for the long stretches of Cm7. He often cuts this down to minor pentatonic (C Eb F G Bb) or adds the flat 5th to create
the blues scale (C Eb F Gb G Bb). There are two contrasting chord progressions between the stretches of Cm7. The
first one just has Fm7-Dm7b5-Db13, and Guthrie uses F Dorian (F G Ab Bb C D Eb) for the first two chords, and then Db
Mixolydian (Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb Cb) for the Db13.

If youre confused about that Cb note, its exactly the same as a B, but it gets a different name for reasons of music
theory correctness! In measure 48, he also plays a cool line mixing G Superlocrian (G Ab Bb Cb Db Eb F) with a G7
arpeggio basically hes using tritone substitution, interpreting the Db13 as its tritone equivalent, G13.

There are many ways of approaching the other progression (measures 23-30, 53-61) but possibly the simplest way is
to alternate between C Dorian (C D Eb F G A Bb) and C Aeolian (C D Eb F G Ab Bb). So youd use Dorian for measure
23, Aeolian for measure 24, and so on. For best results, dont just run up and down the scales, as they wont feel
comfortable with a C root note watch how Guthrie picks out target notes to fit each underlying chord.

Theres a tiny interlude change in measures 31-34 you can easily stick to Ab Lydian for the Abmaj7 (youre basically
staying with the same notes as C Aeolian from the previous measure) and then switch to F Mixolydian for the F7 (its the
same notes as C Dorian).
