8.(a) Use Lagrange interpolation to find the value of log(656), when the given data
log(654)=2.8156, log(658)=2.8182, log(659)=2.8189, log(661)=2.8202.
(b) Use the classical fourth-order Runge Kutta method to integrate
f(x, y) = 2x3 + 12x2 20x + 8.5
using a step size of h = 0.5 and an initial condition of y = 1 at x = 0.

9. a. Consider 1-dimensional steady state conduction without heat generation taking place in
a rectangular slab. The temperature of the left side of the slab is 1000C and of the right
side is 2000C. The length of the slab is 10 cm and the thermal conductivity of the slab
is 120 W/(cm-K). Make nine uniform divisions. The governing equation is
k(d2T/dx2)=0
10. (a) Use the Crank-Nicolson method to solve for the temperature distribution of a
long, thin rod with a length of 10 cm and the following values: k= 0.49 cal/(s cm 0C), x = 2 cm,
and t = 0.1 s. At t = 0, the temperature of the rod is zero and the boundary
conditions are fixed for all times at T(0) = 1000C and T(10) = 500C. Note that the rod is aluminum
with C = 0.2174 cal/(g 0C) and = 2.7 g/cm3. Therefore, k = 0.49/(2.7 0.2174) =
0.835 cm2/s and = 0.835(0.1)/(2)2 = 0.020875.

10.(b) Evaluate f(x)= (1-x2), by Simpsons one-third rule taking six equal intervals,
a=0 and
b=1,correct upto two decimal places.

11. a. Use the simple implicit finite-diffrence approximation to solve for the temperature distribution
of a long, thin rod with a length of 10 cm and the following values: k= 0.49 cal/(s cm 0C), x = 2
cm, and t = 0.1 s.
0.835 cm2/s and = 0.835(0.1)/(2)2 = 0.020875. 10
