Lesson 2
Millstone River

Math Lesson
Rationale:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.OA.A.2
Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical
expressions without evaluating them.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.OA.B.3
Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships
between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from
the two patterns, and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.
This lesson is being taught to teach the students how to use function charts
This lesson is being taught to review algebraic expressions
This lesson will be relating algebra to real life
This lesson is important because it will teach the students strategies they can use
in all aspects of learning and real life situations
This lesson fits into the big picture by teaching students new ways to use
problem solving strategies as well as practicing their algebra.
This is a review lesson for algebraic expressions for the students. The students
already know how to solve algebraic expressions, they will just be using a new
chart to make it easier for them.
Learning goal:
Improve my own questioning techniques
Transitions
Student engagement in the lesson
Improve informal assessments within lessons
Have a formal close to the lesson

Source(s):
Lesson came from the 5th grade curriculum and Mrs. Bossios lesson plans for the
unit
This lesson was made our own by creating the tic tac toe board and a number line
in the back of the classroom that the students will be able to use during the unit
The worksheets that are being used during the lesson are found in the 5th grade
curriculum binders for this lesson
We also went online and found websites that would be beneficial to the students
who were participating in the lesson

Materials:
Notebooks
Chromebooks
Pencils
Tic Tac Toe board
Tic Tac Toe accessories and worksheets

Objective:
SWBAT use in/out function charts
SWBAT complete algebraic expressions with 80% accuracy
SWBAT explain their logic behind the answer they received

Assessment: (time)
Throughout whole lesson
Oral assessment
Written assessment (in math notebooks)
Completed function charts
Tic Tac Toe activities

Lesson Introduction: (time)

10-15 minutes
Remind students of algebraic terminology from prior lessons
Students will review those terms
Ask students what they have been doing in math
Ask students how can using algebra help you out in real life situations. (If
Dr.Seuss wrote 455 books and Mrs.Bossio read 132 of them, how many books
does she still need to read them all? 132 + b = 455)
Students will turn and talk to a partner about what they think of the 2 previous
questions and then share with the class what they discussed
Review problems on the board to review the in/out function charts
Explain the new Tic Tac Toe board

Lesson development: (time)

20-30 minutes

Explain what theyll be doing with the Tic Tac Toe boards
I will be walking around facilitating and helping whoever needs it
Encourage math language throughout the lesson
Assist Mrs.Bossio with whatever she may need help in
Distractions and off topic questions could be an issue, splitting up from
Mrs.Bossio would be the best thing to do to keep the class under control and on
task.

Conclusion: (time)
10-15 minutes
Bring students back together review what we just did in the Tic Tac Toe boards
Look over some of the work
Answer any questions

Differentiation:
Independent work made to encourage everyone to be involved in what they
want to work on
Tic Tac Toe Differing levels of math
Extra Work

Behavior Management:

Stay on topic
Allow seat changes which students get distracted at if they are not where they
want to be
Allow questions if student has 1 question they are allowed to ask, otherwise
they must wait until after the lesson
Take turns speaking students will try to overpower others
Pre Observation Form

What do you expect to accomplish in this lesson?

After this lesson the students are expected to be able to complete algebraic
expressions with 80% accuracy. Students will be expected to use their prior
knowledge of math language to successfully complete blocks on their Tic Tac Toe
boards. Students will also use prior knowledge of their math routine to go through
their math lesson without interruptions.

How you intend to evaluate the effectiveness of the lesson?

The lesson introduction will evaluate the effectiveness of prior lessons. This
lesson is just a review so the Tic Tac Toe board will be a way to evaluate the
effectiveness of the unit. How well the students follow directions formally and
informally will be an evaluation of this lesson as well.
