1.0) Introduction

Globally, about 1.5 billion adults are overweight and among them, 200 million men
and 300 million women are obese (World Health Organization). These values have doubled
compared to 1980 and by 2015, about 2.5 billion adults will be overweight and 700 million
will be obese (WHO). People are suffering from obesity and it has become the leading causes
of life-threatening diseases such as High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Heart disease, Infertility
and etc. (Medical Weight Loss Resources 2014) Besides from the health aspect, obesity also
affects how the person is going to lead and pursuit their life and that doesnt just lead to their
physical health, but in every aspect such as personal, mental, social, physical and spiritual
health.

I am a person who always motivates everyone for not giving up on something they
really wanted to have and they wanted to be. Besides, I found out that people easily give up
on their dreams and goals before they work it out. I discovered that obese people dont have
confidence to engage in sports during Physical Education class in school as they are shy to do
certain moves as part of the teaching system. I had seen them often get discriminated and
bullied by others. Some, who cannot cope up, leads to self-hate, self-cut and stress eating.

I am born to love sports and inspired by sports, thus, the problems that caused by
obesity in every health aspect and my sporty personality had inspired me on my way to come
up with this Personal Project, which is to create a motivational video that would motivate and
inspire teenagers from the age 12-18 (Target Audience) who suffer from obesity and for them
to make a change. I believe that everything is better if we start a healthy lifestyle in the early
age before it is too late.

Prior to this, I had an idea to motivate people to do sports. However, in sports, we

need sufficient space, skills and time in order to do it. So, I decided to think out of the box,
which is creating a video to motivate people to work out. I chose this topic because I found
out that since people are so connected to the internet nowadays, Im going to motivate them
through the most effective way through uploading my self-made motivational video in the
internet.

To do this Personal Project, a subject must be included as the example in my

motivational video. He must be a teenager at the age of 12 to 18 with obesity. However, he
must agree with the terms and conditions with full willingness. He will receive plans of the

3
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
daily routine workout exercises and suggested diets I prepared. I will take pictures of him
shirtless to prove his improvement. Besides, I will meet him every weekend to see progress.
Videos will be taken for editing.

I expect that I can improve myself and others to live a better lifestyle with confidence
to face the world. This gives me the opportunity to be a better communicator and open
minded person by accepting judgment and criticisms. Furthermore, I would expect to enhance
my research skills through the research processes that I will be undertaking. Through the
motivational video, it will be an instrument for them to build up their confidence and find
their true identity of themselves for self-improvement. It would create an impact not only to
myself but also to others, which is essential for I have applied my international mindedness
IB student. Furthermore, going through this personal project would mould me into a lifelong
learner, carrying with me first-hand experiences, which is essential for me as a growing up
individual.

1.1 Goal

My main goal is to create a successful motivational video that can reduce the
population of teenagers suffering from obesity and to motivate teenagers to start a healthy
lifestyle with confidence. I am passionate to undertake this project because I have seen the
benefits of working out and I want to share it to others. I am passionate for change, not only
to myself but also for others. If they will watch my motivational video, they will be moved
with the message that I want to convey and make a change in themselves. My audiences will
be motivated to be the person they really wanted to be and start believing in themselves. The
significance of my motivational video is to teach the target audiences a strong sense on
decision making on how they are going to lead and pursuit their life. For every decision they
make would improve their health in every aspects: mental, social, personal, physical and
spiritual.

1.2 Global Context & Relevance

The Global Context that I chose for my Personal Project is Identities and
Relationship. It focuses on creating a better lifestyle based on the 5 aspects of health and

4
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
exploring the true identity of oneself. It also revolves around human relationships including
families, friends, communities and cultures and the values of people who suffer from obesity
who are often found to be lacking of confidence. With the motivational video, the target
audiences would find themselves engaging with the workouts and enhance their decision
making skills, goal-setting, making steps to achieve their goals in life and make a habit out of
it.

Before deciding this global context, which is Identities and Relationships, the global
context that I had before in mind was Fairness and Development. I decided to change it
because I found out that Fairness and Development are more related to peace and conflict
resolution. It has come to my realization that it is more fitting to use Identities and
Relationships. Through self-realization, I have then decided to use it as my final global
context because my study is about a motivational video that would inspire and motivate my
target audience. These are all linked to Identities and Relationships.

1.3 Subject Specific

The subjects that revolve around my Personal Project are Physical Education,
Information & Technology and Biology. I believe that this prior knowledge that I have
gained from these subjects would help me all throughout the process.

Physical Education: With the knowledge of Physical Education, it could assist me in my

Personal Project. I have to calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI) of my subject and find the
best exercises recommended by experts and see the difference in 2 months.

Information & Technology: The significance of Information & Technology in my project is

that I can apply the knowledge I had in this subject in making my motivational video
especially on the aspects of photography, editing techniques, and the process on how to insert
motivational messages into my video.

Biology: Biology, which is linked to Physical Education, taught me how the body works and
react to certain kinds of exercises whether it harms my subject or not. I applied my
knowledge in this subject by effectively suggesting a healthy diet to my subject.

2.0) Investigating

I would be researching on two aspects, workout plans for my subject and creating a
motivational video. I carried out with the primary and secondary researches for my Personal
Project, the Big 6 (Refer to Appendix 1) and the interview method (Refer to Appendix 2. I will
use these two methods to ensure that I would be gaining ideas needed in my personal project.

2.1) Evaluation of Sources

I first started with an interview and I categorized them into two, PE and ICT. For PE,
it will be on the plans for my subject such as best exercises to burn fats, food that can help
slim down the weight without side effects, and the number of times to workout per week.
While for ICT, it is more on creating my video such as the approximate length for a
motivational video, expectations in a motivational video, and recommendations of application
to create a motivational video. (Refer to Appendix 2)

According to my secondary researches, I discovered that there is no specific time limit

for a motivational video because I learnt that durations of videos are within 2-15 minutes.
Besides, after going through internet websites, there are few of the key elements to inspire
and motivate my audience. According to my research, I had included some exercises that
would help my subject lose weight fast and effective. (Refer to Appendix 1)

Lastly, in order for me to create a workout plan for my subject, I need a specific
format. According to The 6-Week Fat Blast Workout Routine, I discovered that workout
plans for my subject consists sets or repetitions and rest day as it would not cause muscle
injuries.

(Refer to Appendix 3) for Evaluating On Sources

Being an IB student, I have learnt to enhance my research skills. With the knowledge
that I have on the different research skills, I have learnt how and what research skills to use
which would be effective in my research process. I have thought many times on what
effective research methods to make my study successful. I want to share these knowledge to
my peers so it would help them be successful in their personal project.

2.2) Impact to Society and Community

Obesity has significant implications for social care. When I had my research, I have
learnt that most obese people have low self-esteem and it is because of their physical
6
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
appearance. In addition, some of them are the object of bullying making them more
uncomfortable losing their sense of belongingness. Some would even have suicidal
tendencies because of the fact that they are victims. This is the primary reason why health
and social experts focus on obese people in encouraging them to live a healthy life and make
a change in themselves so that these suicidal and bullying issues will be eradicated.

My Personal Project can impact the society and community by promoting the risks of
obesity, to improve and combat obesity for proper lifestyles in societies, while it can also
help victims with obesity to gain more confidence in oneself. In addition, it can help to
outline the importance of obesity prevention to improve life expectancy and quality of life in
societies. If I would make an impact to them, in a way, I would be able to help others to build
up their confidence and that change in them would really happen. Consequently, suicidal and
bullying issues will be responded and that I have made an impact in their lives through the
motivational video that I will be creating.

2.3) How the PP develops IB Learner Profiles & ATL Skills

Through the experiences I had in my Personal Project, I have learnt to be a better

inquirer, thinker, communicator, courageous and reflective. I will learn the skill of inquiry
especially during the research progress that I would have to conduct interviews to collect
more information. Besides, I would also learn to think critically when analysing my product
and solving complex problems which I face it during the creation of my product.

Among all the above, the Personal Project cant be successful without a good self-
management skill as managing time properly and being self- motivated to start taking actions
for my Personal Project. This skill will be developed on the planning stage, which I would
have to create plans together with the timeline. (Refer to Appendix 4)

7
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
3) Planning

I have created an S.M.A.R.T Goal, Design Specification, Product Specification and

Product Criteria. These sets of planning mediums would guide me to create the right, suitable
and reasonable product in a well-organized manner. It would also make sure that my product
would be of its best in terms of suitable video length, content, organization and effectiveness.
(Refer to Appendices 3-6)

3.1 Setting goals

To create a successful Personal Project, first I would need a specific goal. Therefore, I
created a goal organizer called SMART Goal as it is to help me on stretching out my
comfort zone and motivate me to push more towards my Personal Project. Basically, my goal
is to create a motivational video and the time- frame to complete it is within 2 months. I
believe that I would be able to finish it in a 2-month frame since the duration would be
enough to achieve everything that is needed in my personal project. (Refer to Appendix 5)

3.2 Design Specification

In order to make my product different from others, I created a design specification. It

consists of my products requirements and basic knowledge on my product outcome. This
would guide me as to how my product would look like which should be different from others
and that I have not forged any single specifics in my project output. This would also give
information as to how others would envision my output. Through the design specification,
they would have a clear view as to what I used in my output. (Refer to Appendix 6)

3.3 Product Specification

Before creating my product, I need an idea on how the product would look like.
Therefore, I created this Product Specification. This basically gives me an idea of the
products appearance and detailed requirements. Most importantly, product specification
allows me to present my idea in motivating my target to make a change and be moved with

8
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
the video that I have created and all these are credited to the specifications that I have chosen
to really make the video motivational and appealing to the audience. (Refer to Appendix 7)

3.4 Product Criteria

A product criterion was designed for me to refer to the quality of my product. This
would help me bring out the best in my product. Not only that, this product criteria would
also help me evaluate my product in terms of content, organization and structure, footage
shooting skills, editing skills and enchanting product skills. (Refer to Appendix 8) Before this
criterion was created, I made few changes such as adding in more specific skills like audio,
background music and lighting on footage shooting skills. Besides, I had also added in
editing elements like, cutting and transitions in video editing skills criteria.

3.5 Plans on Subject (Plans of exercises to help my subject to slim down)

I targeted result to be seen in 2 months, thus, an exercise plan was made for my
subject. The exercise plan would make sure that my subject will slim down within the
specific time bound. This plan was created after a variety of researches from my investigating
stage which I had conducted interview on experienced Physical Education teacher and surfing
online. This two-month time bound has been proven effective. I have to guide him then so he
would really follow the workout routines I presented. (Refer to Appendix 9)

3.6 Plot Designs (Plotting the flow)

After setting a specific design, I divided my video into 4 parts. It consists of the
Introduction, Progress of my subject, Result of my subject and Additional motivational words.
It also comprises a minimum of 30 seconds to 45 seconds in length. However, the video
length is just a prediction. Therefore, some parts of the video may be shorter or longer than
the predicted time length. It is a general plot that was created for an effective storyboard.
(Refer to Appendix 10)

9
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
3.7 Timeline

The Gantt chart was created to constantly remind me of each deadline that I planned
to finish in a specific time- frame. It guides me to cope-up with the weekly basis and organize
my time properly to achieve my goals. This helps me to be motivated with my work to be
aware with the deadlines and finished promptly. (Refer to Appendix 11)

Predicted Timeline VS Actual Timeline

The reason that Im doing two timelines is because I would like to compare both
timeline and discover whether Ive achieved the goal of my time management skill and could
organize my time properly to complete each stage of my project. I would also like to know
the place that I could improve my time management skill from comparing both timelines and
find out the differences and the reasons why it makes such differences.

10
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
4) Taking Action

4.1 Target Audience

The audience that I had targeted for my product are teenagers with obesity within the
age from 12 to 18. I have targeted these audiences because I have learnt in my research that it
is at this stage wherein every teenager has to know how to value their health and they are
conscious of their bodies; they would be more motivated to take precautions in their body.

4.2 Product Development Stage 1: Preparation

First, I prepared my materials to create the product. I used my phone for video filming,
laptop for video editing, and application programmes to edit and combine footages. Finding a
good setting is significant wherein both outdoor and indoor settings were considered for
better video imaging.

4.3 Product Development Stage 2: Filming Progress

My subject wasn't able to accomplish his task due to serious leg injuries which
affected my plan. With my back-up plan, (Refer to Appendix 13) thinking and predicting the
possibilities that might happen, I am able to find my new subject that meets the requirement.
There was an advantage in terms of communication as both of us meets the collaboration and
taking action process as we live near each other. He was asked to perform a series of
exercises, which is included in my Plans on Subject(Refer to Appendix 9), to see the
differences before and after the plan. In addition, the weight of my subject, before and after,
was also filmed.

4.4 Product Development Stage 3: Video Editing

The video editing part uses the programmes and Design Technology. I used
Photodex Pro show Producer for editing, the most recommended for creating my product. I
used the Plot Design to use the footages that I filmed. Besides from just adding and editing
the footages in my video, I also included some motivational words that impacts the audience.

11
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
For the transitions that I used between two footages, I have chosen Crossfade-Blend
as it helps bring the fading effect creating emotional impression to the audience. For the text
transitions, I used Fade in and Fade out which bring the same effect in the footage
transitions.

On another hand, I decided to use Fix You by Cold Play as background music
because the lyrics and the rhythm work very well in bringing out the emotional effect.

4.5 Point Of View

The whole video is structured in a first-person and second-person point of view. I

have always found myself more comfortable with writing things in third-person point of view.
However, I wanted to explore my linguistic capabilities therefore, I decided to write the
captions in a different way, which is first and second- person point of view. (Refer to
Appendix 12)

12
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
5) Reflecting

5.1 Reflection of Product

Through the evaluation from my Design Specification, Product Specification and

S.M.A.R.T goal that Ive done in my Planning Stage, most of the parts has met my
expectations as I followed the specifications and targeted goals to complete my product.

Overall, my product has efficiently provided a sufficient solution for people who are
obese through the motivational video, wherein the product has achieved my goal. However,
Im not satisfied with the products quality because my subject wasnt able to reduce much
weight as I expected. It would have been better if my subject drastically lost weight so that
audiences can really see the big difference. Thus, more motivated from the video.
Nevertheless, a change was visible in the video, but it has not met my desired outcome.

5.2 Understanding the Topic

I decided to create a motivational video because I wanted to use it to motivate people

with obesity to stop giving up on who they want to be, improve human lifestyle and decrease
the rate of obesity which leads to multiple diseases. By doing this, I am able to motivate my
target audience to start working out because of the motivational video. In my motivational
video, my subject faced through hard times in performing the exercise, but as training gets
harder, my subject was able to perform exercises comfortably. As per the video, my subject
almost gave up on the exercise routine. However, his willingness surpass his idea on giving
up. Through constant training, he successfully slimmed down 8 kilograms through the time
bound that I had set.

5.3 Understanding of Global Context: Identities and Relationship

I have brought my audience to explore their real identities, as my audience were given
the chance to change through the motivational video. Not only physically but also all of the
aspects of health. Going deeper, my video does not only support the audiences to form their
identities but also their self- esteem towards public. One thing that I learned while working
on my project is that wishing things like Identities to happen cant be done overnight, but,
by developing each step discreetly, the main goal is eventually being achieved.

13
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
By exposing my audience to my subject, it provides my audience to have stronger
beliefs and values to believe in themselves even more after slimming down. I have realised
that sometimes, I stereotype and look down upon children who are suffering from obesity, but
now I understand that most of them are mostly living a life with low self- esteem.

5.4 Product against reflective criteria

In order for me to improve on my product, I created a table to compare and contrast

my actual product with the product criteria that I created in the planning stage. In the table, I
used band 7-8 to compare with my actual product, as I think that striving for the highest band
can help determine and find out the errors that was done in the product. (refer to Appendix 16)

5.5 Strengths

Viewing through the entire process of the Personal Project, I discovered that one of
my main strengths is having confidence in my project and I had multiple plans in my mind
before starting the project. It is strongly based from my personal interest because I saw its
advantage in terms of my outlook and attitude towards for I find it stress-free.

Moreover, the use of communication was also exhibited by me immediately after I

knew that my first subject couldnt help me complete the process of slimming down. I
communicated with my supervisor to find solutions. Fortunately, a new subject was found
and I was able to collaborate well with him, until my project is complete.

During the collaboration with my subject, I realized that I made the right choice to
create upon choosing this topic. My presumptions were correct that obesity can affect a
persons confidence level, which was evident in my subject who was shy to perform the
exercises with the fear that he might be laughed at by me. I have learnt to be principled and
open-minded so as not to hurt him. The thought of considering workouts that would not harm
him is a true manifestation that I care about my subject and mindful of his safety. I will use
this weakness for me to better myself and to motivate others to follow what I have exuded in
the different IB Learner Profiles.

14
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
5.6 Weakness

Every one of us has his or her own weaknesses for we all have imperfections. In this
project, I discovered some of my weaknesses while doing the whole process. One of which is
my time management skills. Comparing my actual date with the predicted timeline for
product making, I found out that I wasted a lot of time which is the reason why my second
subject wasnt able to slim down as I expected. I have to be more mindful with setting time
and to really follow what is stated in my timeline so as to achieve what I desire for.

Apart from that, I wasnt able to collaborate well with my first subject for I only have
weekends to meet him. However, after my first subject wasnt able to help me anymore, I
was given a second chance to improve my project. Fortunately, I was able to find my second
subject and was able to collaborate well with him. I have then realized that I have to choose a
subject that is available anytime so that collaboration wouldnt be an issue. I would be able to
achieve my product and design specifications promptly.

If given the chance, I would choose a more stable subject to start my project with and
I would use a better camera to shoot the footages for a better quality. This way, everything
would be in order.

5.7 Reflection on Learning & Development as an IB learner

This Personal Project allowed me to learn a lot of values. I developed more

knowledge and understanding on the specific topic that is essential in my project. I acquired
ways to motivate people, video and editing skills, and ways to lose weight in testing subjects.
Not only I become a better video creator but also a better IB learner by exploring more about
my projects global context and developing my IB learner attitudes and learning approaches.

I realised that the Personal Project isnt just about focusing on products and reports
but the values a student will develop in learning new things. Ive learned lots of video editing
skills such as: the use of transitions and slow motion that brings out different effects to the
audience. I also learned different types of motivation elements like, bringing in emotions and
hope to audience, which cant just appear in a motivational video.

At the beginning of the Personal Project, I wasnt sure whether I should go out of my
comfort zone and create such challenging video, which I think that a video with facts about
15
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
badminton is even easier to create. I could just insert information about different techniques
of badminton with footages demonstrating it. However, I realised that trying something new
and unfamiliar situations such as motivational video, requires a lot of time to research and
find out the elements to motivate people, which I think it can push me to even further limit
and discover my potential capabilities.

The project helped me to be more self- motivated and organized person as I have to
make effort on meeting my subject, find an efficient time that we both are free to train and
take footages. I also learned to start brainstorming ideas of my project by doing different
types of mind maps before the actions were started. This helped me ensure the specific
actions Im going to start on, and to find out the possibilities of errors that might happen
during the progress which helped me avoid regretting on doing the particular action.

Appendix 7: Product Specification

Specification Characteristics Justification

Video length 2-3minutes 2- 3 minutes video length is just perfect
for a motivational video as I
experienced that motivational video that
are more than 5 minutes are no longer a
motivational video to me as it gets
boring and too much information.
Besides, I also doesnt want my video
to be too short as it will not achieve my
main goal effectiveness
Background colour (only Black The colour of black means emotional,
when there is font) insecurities and lack of confidence, as it
is the effect that I wanted to gives to my
audience; I found it easier to motivate
people when they are emotional.
Font Colour in video White The combination of the white font
colour and black background would
make the font more visible and clearer
for audience to read.
Font Sizes 30 The font size 30 is the most appropriate
size for my video as there will only be
few words, just to prevent from being to
wordy which the font size also need to
fit the space of the background and
readable for my audience.
Font Type Times New Roman Times New Roman is the most
. understandable font; my video font
doesnt need to have attractive or stylish
font as it only works well with the title
and it might be hard to read for my
audience.
Title Change to Yourself This title brings implicit meaning to the

27
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
audience with obesity for motivating
them to become what they really
wanted to be and to find their real
identity which it is related to my Global
Context Identities and Relationships.
This title is much catchier and creative
than the title Motivational Video for
people with Obesity, that audiences
might not get interested.
Music Fix You- Coldplay I found this song can suits my
motivational video well as in the slow
pace of rhythm. Besides that, the lyrics
are also emotional; Lights will guide
you home, and ignite you home that it
gives an effect to my audience for never
give up to be who they want.
Transitions in video Fade The fading transitions can brings more
emotional effect compare to other
transitions.
Voices No Although the use of voices is common
in a motivational video, but some
people might found it hard to
understand what the speaker is trying to
say.

Appendix 15: Steps on Creating product

Steps on creating product

Step 1: In this step, I use the footage that had been taken with my subject to insert it into the
ProShow Producer programme. This step is significant as without the footages, the video
will not work.

Step 2: After applying the first footage, I added transition for it; the transition that I used is
called Cross fade- Greyscale Blend as this effect can brings out the effect of a past-tense
which the transition will slowly fade the footage into grey colour.

41
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
Step 3: In this step, I added in a caption page which is to include some motivational words
and emotional first person perspective of my subject into the video, it is to show the audience
on the thoughts of my subject having, while he was obese. Besides from that, I also chose the
background colour to be black and while the font colour is white, it is to bring out some

emotional effect to my audience.

42
Sim Bao Yongs Personal Project
Step 4: After the first caption page is added, I also apply caption behaviours like Fade In
and Fade out into the caption that I had made. The reason goes the same, which is to suits
with the rhythm of the song later on and brings out the emotional effect to my audience.

Step 5: Next, I insert background music into my video called Fix You by Cold Play, the
song has a very slow rhythm that perfectly suits the transitions and caption behaviour that I
had applied in previously.

Step 6: I repeat the similar step as Step 1 to Step 4 to insert other footages and caption page
into the motivational video.
