Course Title : SOLID STATE AC AND DC DRIVES
Instructor-in-Charge :

Course Description:
Electric drives play a vital role in industrial automation and widespread applications ranging
from robots to automobiles to aircraft. Students learn how to select motor rating for a
particular application, motor type selection, stability of drive system, speed controland
braking using single phase , three controlled rectifiers and choppers, speed control and
braking of three phase induction motor, synchronous motor and brushless dc motor using
power electronics converter. Upon completion, students should be able to decide rating and
type of motor for specific type of load, design converter for control of dc, ac and special
motors.

Scope & Objective:

On completion of this course, the students will be able to
1.Apply different techniques of speed control and methods of braking of series and separately
exited DC motor
2.Analyze DC motor performance fed by single phase and three phase converters and
choppers
3.Design chopper fed drives for speed and torque control
4.Apply the vector control of three phase induction motor
