MODULE 4

Predicting: Envisioning a plan and its consequences

1. Describe how you project potentially positive and negative consequences of your

decisions/actions, and the decisions/actions of others.

When faced with a problem there will always, more likely going to be positive and

negative consequences given the decision that was taken. When speaking with someone

about the conclusion that was taken it is important to let them know about the different

outcomes. On the other hand, when others give their decisions/actions I always think about

the different consequences it might have.

2. How often during the day do you think, What will happen if?Under what

circumstances do you ask yourself that question?

Very rarely am I faced with this type of question. I tend to implement it only when I

do not know the outcome of a situation.

3. When caring for patients, how far into the future, on average, do you think? How

does the healthcare setting (acute care, long-term care, home care, etc.) impact your

thinking into the future?

I tend to think on an immediate future basis. But mainly it all depends on the

setting. If I am on long-term care then I need to worry about the long term approach of the

patients health, but if I am on acute care them I only need to worried on stabilizing the

patient.

1. Describe two situations, one in which you demonstrate abstract thinking and one in

which you demonstrate concrete thinking. Which is your predominant made of thinking?

Why do you think that?

Because I am more of a concrete thinking I tent to face situations in that matter, for

example

2. Describe a situation in which you learned something new and thought about how

you would use that information in different situations.

I took a cooking class in which we had to learn to cook at a gourmet level. Seen as I

dealt with a lot of diabetic patients and they tend to think that their diet needs to be

restricted. I used the knowledge that I obtained from my cooking class and applied it to that

situation.

3. Describe an event in which you have drawn on knowledge from several different

sources and blended that knowledge to deal with a problem.

Childhood obesity has been a big concern in this country. I am currently working

with obese children, I realized that with every ten children that I saw eight of them were

obese with high risk of developing diabetes or becoming pre-diabetic. Since 2010 I started

a program to prevent or treat this situation. What followed this new knowledge was the fact

that in order to treat it, it was not only a matter or working with the child but also working

with the parent so that a healthy living could be established in that family.

Based on your in-depth analysis of your critical thinking processes and thinking

habits, what critical thinking processes (skills and habits of the mind) would you like to

improve?

List at least 4 and give a rationale why you would like to improve these processes.
Creativity, to be able to come up with different alternative to a solution so that every

party is happy.

Flexibility, to be able to change my perspective in different situations.

Contextual perspective in order for my flexibility to change then a different

contextual perspective needs to be applied.

Open-mindedness in order to be more flexible, have more creativity and actually

allow myself to see a different perspective, one needs to be more open-minded. Being about

to do this opens your eyes to different alternatives to a problem.
