WEEK 7 COMPUTATIONAL THINKING

Your name: Marisa Ellsworth

Your classroom (Provide a brief description of your classroom/grade/subject/specialization, etc): I have

a third grade class with all of the students learning below a 3rd grader common core standard. My class
needs a lot of one on one attention to be able to understand what I am teaching them. For this lesson
my class will be working on mathematics

Based on the definitions provided by this week and last weeks articles, along with the
examples on p. 52 of this weeks article, complete the chart below to provide specific
examples of how you would encourage CT and problem solving in your classroom.

CT Principle How you would define it How would it manifest in your

(in your own words) class

Find a data source for a certain I could have my class collect

Data Collection problem. data from flipping a coin and
figure out how many times it
lands on heads or tails.
Count how many times a certain My class would count how many
Data Analysis data appears. times heads occurred in their
data collection.
Using a graph to represent data I would have my class create a
Data Representation they collected. pie chart showing the difference
between how many times heads
or tails were flipped.
Solving a math expression using I could make up a math
Problem Decomposition order of operations. expression using the data the
class collect from above and
have them solve it using order of
operations.
Solving math equations that Im not sure that I will be able to
Abstraction have variables in it encourage this in my classroom
just because my class is below
in the standard for third grade
and they are not ready to learn
equations with variables in it.
Solving math problems using This principle doesnt apply for
Algorithms and Procedures long division, and factoring my 3rd grade class because its
something that they dont learn
until about 5th grade.
Use different tools to help them I could have my class use a geo
Automation solve math problems. board to make different shapes
while they are learning about
quadrilaterals
Solving linear systems using Again, this principle is for a
Parallelization matrix multiplication higher elementary or even high
school students so it wont apply
to my 3rd grade class.
Graph a function in a Cartesian Again, this principle is for a
Simulation plane higher elementary or even high
school students so it wont apply
to my 3rd grade class.
