Manifest Destiny the belief that the expansion of the US throughout America
was both justified and inevitable
Civil War a war fought between Americans in the north and south.
Slaves were freed as a result.
Constitution the set of rules that guides how the US works. It tells what
the branches of the government are, what powers they
have, and how they work. It also states the rights of
citizens.
President The person who executes/enforces laws, treaties, and court
rulings, prepares the national budget, and appoints the
cabinet and Supreme Court. He also approves or vetoes acts
of Congress and grants pardons.
Checks and Balances A system used to keep the government from getting too
powerful in one branch.
Legislative Branch The branch made up of Congress, which makes the laws,
controls all of the money, and has the power to declare war.
Congress The people who meet at the United States Capitol in
Washington, D.C. to make the laws that all Americans follow.
Judicial Branch The branch of the Supreme Court, judges the laws, judges
when a law is unconstitutional, and makes arrangements for
prisoners.
Executive Branch This branch includes the President and Vice President who
enforce the laws of the United States, spend money as
allowed by Congress, declare states of emergency, appoint
Judges to the Supreme Court, and grant pardons for crimes.
Supreme Court Has 9 justices who are responsible for explaining and
interpreting the Constitution.

Democracy a government run by the people, each citizen has a say (or
