PROTECTION FROM ELECTRIC SHOCK

Before performing any repair work on the product, be sure to turn off the power
switch and remove the power cable from the electrical outlet.
Whenever it is necessary to turn the power on after opening the case or cover (for
example, during the adjustment process) be sure to take off any metallic materials
such as a watch, cuff links, rings, or tie pin, which may touch the metallic part of the
product, creating a danger of electric shock.

PROTECTION FROM INJURY

Be sure not to touch the lamp and its surroundings after the power is turned off.
They may be hot. Also, be sure not to touch the light source and its surroundings
during adjustments while power is turned on.
Make sure to use gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges during assembly
and disassembly.
To protect your eyes, do not look into the light source or lens while the light is on.

ACCIDENT PREVENTION
To prevent the device or its components from falling, place the device on a flat,
stable surface before using it or working on it. Be careful not to place tools or parts
on the device or at your feet.
To prevent this product from being used while it is disassembled, be sure not to
leave it out during any repair work, and do not place it in a location where it can be
taken for use by mistake.
Be sure to use the attached power cable to supply power to the product.

PRODUCT SAFETY

ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE
Whenever performing repair work on the product, be sure to wear a wristband and
use an electrostatic mat for grounding. When replacing any electric components

1.1 PRODUCT FEATURES

The PowerLite 5000XB/7000XB multimedia projector is a portable, easy-to-use presentation
device with SVGA/XGA resolution. It projects enhanced color images from personal computers
and from video equipment such as VCRs, camcorders, and digital cameras.

Features

Lightweight, Compact, Portable

The PowerLite 5000XB/7000XB weighs only 14.1 lb. (6.4 kg) / 14.5 lb. (6.6 kg). An optional
carrying case is available for transporting the projector.

Bright and Clear Images

The high performance zoom lens, new bright lamp (750/650 lm. ANSI), and optical block
provide a wide image of 21" to 300" (1.2 to 12.3 m). An optional brightness screen provides
clear images, even with bright ambient light.

High Resolution Full Color (16770 Thousand Colors)

Three TN liquid crystal panels (R, G, and B) of 480,000 / 786,432 pixels support an SVGA
resolution of 800 x 600 / 1024 x 768. The grid between pixels in the liquid crystal panel is
thinner than that of conventional projectors, providing sharp contrast.

Remote Control
You can control the projector using a hand-held remote control unit that has menus for
image source switching and image adjustment. The remote control can also work as a
wireless mouse during presentations.

The ELP LINK IITM software has add-on features that make presentations effective.

Connectivity with Various Types of Computers

The projector can connect to various types of computers, such as IBM-compatible PCs,
laptops, and Macintosh computers. It also differentiates NTSC, PAL, or SECAM video
signals in composite video or S-Video format.

Advanced Image Real-Time Resizer

The projector features a new, patented SizeWiseTM chip that supports SVGA, VGA and XGA
output. No matter what type of output is used, the result is a full-size video image of
outstanding clarity.

Description of the Projection Process

1. The digital or analog R/G/B signal is provided by a computer (1 or 2) to the main

board. Analog signals (S-video or video signals) are sent to the main board through the
AU board. (Analog signals are converted into digital signals by the main board.)

2. The digital video signal is then stored in video memory (SRAM) on the main board.
Then the driver board generates signals to drive the R/G/B light valves.
3. The R/G/B light valves are individual panels, independent of each other. They work to
shut off or transmit lights from the light guide unit.

4. Lights transmitted through the light valves are combined by a prism and projected
through the lens unit.

Optical System Connections (Optical Engine)

The optical system consists of 5 blocks: the lamp inner housing, light guide unit, optical
head/prism unit, and projector lens unit (which are shown below) and the driver board.
These units comprise the optical engine, which is a single replaceable part.

In addition to the optical engine, an FC board is attached at the bottom of the light guide
unit. The relay board connects the FC board in the lamp inner housing to the driver board,
and is independent of the optical functions.

2.2 POWER SUPPLY UNIT

The power supply unit includes a DC regulator, intake fan, and interlock switch for the
lamp cover. The projector uses AC input to generate voltages for the control circuit (+3.3v,
+5v, +12v, +22v) and for the light source lamp from AC input (+350V for 5000XB, +65V for
7000XB).

The PBS thermistor is installed on the side of the power supply intake fan and is attached
by a clamp on the power supply unit. If the power supply overheats, the PBS thermistor
shuts off the regulator output via the main board.

Caution:
Never disassemble the power supply unit.
Do not interchange the power supply units for the PowerLite 5000 and
PowerLite 5000XB (or the PowerLite 7000 and PowerLite 7000XB)they are different
and are not compatible.
The lamps from the PowerLite 5000 and the PowerLite 7000 have different connector
wiring and are not interchangeable.

An interlock switch is included for safety. The interlock switch shuts off the supply of AC
power if the lamp cover at the bottom of the main chassis is open. The safety switch input
signal stops power output to the light source lamp if the projector detects overheating. The
safety switch is mounted on the light guide unit attached to the lamp inner housing.

Functional Outline
The interlock switch at the bottom of the main chassis shuts off power when the lamp
cover is opened. It is normally in the ON position.
The power supply is connected to CN800 / CN801 on the main board. The following
items are also connected to CN800 / CN801:
DC output (+3.3/+5/+12/+22V)
PWDS signal for the power down detection
Lamp power on/off control signal (LPSTC)
Power on/off signal (BACT)

Caution:
If the AC power cable is still connected after the power is shut off, +3.3 V background
voltage is supplied to the main board via CN800 / CN801 and to the power on/off
circuit.

The filter/rectification circuit reduces noise on the AC line and generates DC voltage
for the regulator.
The regulator generates the various DC voltage levels shown in the table below for the
switching regulator. The regulator detects the voltage output level at the +5 V line and
feeds the information back to the switching circuit to maintain a stable output level
regardless of load variations. Not every output level is subject to adjustment.

Functional Outline

The circuit functions of the PowerLite 5000XB and PowerLite 7000XB main boards are
similar, except for video control. This section explains PowerLite 5000XB main board
functions.

IC600 and related circuits are backed up with +3.3 V, which is provided by the power
supply. (If the AC cable is connected to the AC source, the power supply provides
+3.3 V for backup bias even if the projector is turned off.)
When the power is turned on, IC600 on the main board generates a reset signal and
initializes the circuit. The CPU reads the program from flash ROM and writes it into
SRAM. Then the CPU sets functions based on the program and projects the image.
Three thermistors (LV Thermistor / Lamp Thermistor / PBS Thermistor) detect
temperature. If the temperature exceeds a predefined level, the thermistors send an
interrupt signal to IC600 and shut off the power supply.
Signals, either analog or digital, from Computer In 1/2 are converted into analog
signals first, then converted to digital signals again by ADC. This display data is written
into the video memory (SRAM).
Analog output signals are transmitted in differently for analog input and digital input.
1. Digital RGB: The digital image signals are output via the gate and driver board.
2. Analog RGB: The analog image signals are converted by the ADC and the D/A
converter.
The data is stored in the SRAM, then output to the video controller for display via the
CPU. The video controller generates the display control timing and sends the
information to the driver board.
Video input signals (S-Video / Video In) are transferred via the AU board and
converted into digital signals by the A/D converter. They are stored in the SRAM.
The projector has an EEPROM and timer circuit that control the operating time of the
light source bulb (lamp inner housing). Its operation is described in the following table.

out before its expected end of life.
If you observe the conditions above, replace the light source bulb (lamp inner housing),
then turn on the switch. The fuse in the lamp melts and shorts out, so that lamp timer is
reset automatically.

Note:
If any of the three thermistors in the temperature detection circuit detects a specified
temperature, the circuit interrupts the CPU, then shuts off the power supply regulation.

2.4 DRIVER BOARD

The driver board has two functions: one is converting the R/G/B display signal from the
main board into six states of analog signals (light valve driver signals) and the other is
controlling the display image by referencing electrical correction data. In maintenance
service, the entire optical engine must be replaced. No individual parts, such as the driver
board, may be replaced..

Figure 2-12 PowerLite 5000XB Driver Board

Figure 2-13 PowerLite 7000XB Driver Board

2-15
EPSON PowerLite 5000XB/7000XB Service Manual

Functional Outline

Circuit function is almost the same with PowerLite 5000XB and PowerLite 7000XB driver
boards except light valve control. Thus, this section explains PowerLite 5000XB driver
board functions.

The signals RD 0~7, GD 0~7, and BD 0~7 are output from the main board. They are
first converted into analog signals by the digital to analog converter before being output
to the driver circuit for the light valves.

Timing signals output from the display controller are converted into signals for the light
valves (LCDs) by the D/A converter and LCCOM circuit before they are output.

The filter/gate circuit is designed to reduce noise influence on the display driver circuit.
To reduce impulse noise, input signals are sent through the three-level filter circuit. To
reduce the effects of timing delays on the logic, gate circuits work as trigger circuits for
each signal line (R/G/B) and unify the output timing.

The flash ROM contains electrical correction data for the image display. The display
controller reads the correction data. The controller uses the correction data for display
timing generation, brightness/contrast/chroma, and density control.

Light valve driver circuits convert the input analog signals to LCD driver signals.

they are output to the Audio Out interface or the built-in speaker through the sound
controller again.

The sound controller performs the audio-signal output selection based on the SCL/SDA

2.7 REMOTE BOARD

The REMOTE board is used for connecting the remote control receiver to a mouse or
serial interface of a host computer. The controller has an 8-bit CPU and mouse / serial
switching circuit installed on the board.

CN100 (Mouse/COM1) and CN102 (Mouse/COM2) are multi-mouse connectors. If the

ELP communication kit option 2 is installed on the host computer and cables are
connected to it, you can control the computer with the remote control. The controller on the
REMOTE board automatically determines the circuit operation mode (Mouse or COM) to
apply the proper circuit.

The optional remote control receiver can be connected to the remote control interface
(J100). The receiver provides the same functions as the standard receptor board (FI/RI).
Without the receiver, the remote control can be used within a limited area in the front and
rear. The receiver expands the range for the remote control.

Figure 2-18

The signals from the receptor board (FI/RI board) and the optional remote control receiver
are accepted by the remote (IC101). The infrared signals received from the remote control
are output under OR conditions to the main board through CN101 and the connector
board.

If a host computer with the ELP communication kit 2 option is connected to the interface,
the relay circuit is switched depending on each operation. This enables the switch data
transmission to the host computer and remote mouse operation by the remote control.

The ELP communication kit 2 option also enables the remote control to draw lines and
patterns on the screen.

2-21
EPSON PowerLite 5000XB/7000XB Service Manual

The relay circuit (IC111 or IC116C) is switched to be able to accept the mouse encoder
signal and the button signal. Then the signals based on the Tracking +/- button operation
are output to a host computer through the remote. The signals are transferred through the
host computers interface, thus you can control the host computer without its mouse. Refer
to the appendix for detailed data.

2.11 LIGHT GUIDE UNIT

FOR REREFENCE ONLYDO NOT DISASSEMBLE THE LIGHT GUIDE UNIT

The light valve block eliminates ultraviolet rays, which are harmful to the light valves, and
makes the light intensity from the light source lamp uniform before dividing it into 3 light
outputs (R/G/B). Lenses and mirrors built in the block disperse the light. The following
drawings show the light valve block.

Lens Arrays A and B

After dispersion of the light from the light source lamp by lens arrays A and B, the
brightness is roughly uniform. A UV filter coats the surface of the multi-lens array to
eliminate ultraviolet rays. The light dispersed through the lens arrays A and B is further
dispersed through the PBS to make the light intensity uniform.
CDM
The CDM is a light filter that looks red in visual light. The CDM (A) filter transmits only
red light and reflects blue and green light from the light source.
GDM
The GDM is a light filter that looks blue in visual light. The GDM filter transmits only
blue light and reflects the green light provided by the CDM.
Condenser Lens L
Condenser lens L collects the light dispersed by the lens arrays A and B to prevent
reduction and provide light to mirror L in the next stage.
Condenser Lens R/G/B
Collects the light dispersed into the polarization plate on the optical head.
Mirror R/C Unit and Lens Adjusting Screw
Reflects light to the condenser lens E/B. The reflection angle can be adjusted with the
lens adjusting screw.
Mirror B
Reflects the light to condenser lens E.
Lens Array Adjusting Screw
Used for adjusting the A/B lens array position to obtain the best uniformity of source
light.

2.12 LAMP INNER HOUSING

The lamp inner housing consists of the DC drive light source lamp (150 W), the power
supply connector, and the fuse board (FU board). The lamp mounted on the base of the
lower case is a user-replaceable item (type: ELPLP04). The average brightness of the
lamp is 650 (7000XB) / 750 (5000XB) Im (ANSI).

The fuse board (FU board) determines whether the lamp inner housing is installed, and
controls the lamp life (2000 hours). The power supply connector receives 350 VDC from
the power supply unit. Its lead wire is connected to the lamp.

Light Source Lamp

The standard lamp life is 2000 hours. If you notice reduced lamp brightness, replace the
lamp inner housing even if you have used the projector for less than 2000 hours.

The total running time of the light source lamp is written in the EEPROM (IC603:
ST24W04FM6TR) on the main board. If the lamp is nearing or has reached the end of its
life, IC600 (M37732S4BFP) outputs signals to control the following:

When the total running time has reached 1900 hours (1900~2000), the orange and red
lamp indicators blink alternately. The controller (IC600) on the main board counts the
total running hours and has written the running data in IC603. The lamp runs only 100
hours after the orange and the red lamp indicators start to blink alternately, so you
should replace the lamp as soon as possible. (If the lamp indicators blink alternately
when you turn the projector on, the lamp life is no more than 100 hours. Therefore, the
lamp life may be suddenly terminated.)
When the total running time has reached 2000 hours, the lamp is turned off. Then the
cooling down operation starts (the orange lamp indicator blinks). Afterward, the lamp
will not run until you replace it with a new one. You cannot replace it with a used inner
housing because the fuse on the FU board is blown when you start the lamp, which
prevents a used housing from being recognized as a new unit.

Filter Cover Switch

This switch is installed in the lower case and locks with the tab of the filter cover. With the
filter cover open, the intake fan draws in external air to cool down the light valve. This
allows dust to get on the light valve and the prism, degrading the displayed image. The
switch is installed so you cannot turn on the projector when the filter cover is open.

Filter Cover Switch Filter Cover

Figure 2-33

The filter cover switch is connected to CN802 (800) on the main board via CN202 on the
CN board. In main board circuit, IC100 generates the interrupt signal and outputs the
power shut off signal to CN800 (801), so all regulation of operations of the power supply
unit are stopped.

2-34
EPSON PowerLite 5000XB/7000XB Service Manual

Interlock Switch

This switch is installed on the side of the power supply unit and locks with the tab on the
lamp cover. If you turned on the projector with the lamp cover open, the light source lamp
(lamp inner housing) would run and generate high heat. To protect you from burns, the
interlock switch is installed on the AC power source line and the projector cannot be
turned on while the lamp cover is open.

Lamp Thermistor

This is the temperature detection thermistor installed on the lamp outer housing. To
protect the light source lamp from overheating, this thermistor shuts off the power on the
power supply unit if the temperature rises to a certain temperature (lower than the safety
switch level).

Lamp Thermistor

Figure 2-36

The lamp thermistor is connected to CN804 (851) on the main board. If there is
overheating, IC600 generates an interrupt signal and shuts off power in the power supply
unit via CN800 (801).

LV Thermistor

This is the temperature detection thermistor installed on top of the light valve. If cooling is
not sufficient because of intake fan failure (installed at the bottom of the light valve) or filter
contamination (installed at the top of the light valve), the power is shut off to protect the
light valves from overheating. The light valve (liquid crystal panel) has poor thermal
stability. The power shut off control is the same as that of the lamp thermistor, described in
the previous section.

PBS Thermistor

This is the temperature detection thermistor installed on the side of the fan (attached to the
power supply unit). If the environment around the power supply unit overheats because of
a fan or circuit abnormality, this thermistor shuts off the power. The power shut off control
is the same as that of the lamp thermistor.

Limitations of Disassembly (Optical Engine Handling)

Although the disassembly of the projector is detailed in section 3.2, the optical engine is
one replaceable part. (Treat as one replaceable part in field maintenance.)
Optical head unit
Prism unit
Light guide unit
Projection lens unit
Driver board

Note:
Do not disassemble the optical engine or replace any unit in the optical engine.
Do not exchange any unit of the optical engine for the matching unit in another optical
engine.

Caution:
Do not disassemble the light guide unit. If you remove the upper guide cover from the
unit, the alignment of lenses or mirrors may be changed or dust may stick to the unit. Since
the PowerLite 5000XB/7000XB requires precise adjustment, it cannot be adjusted in the
field.

3-2
EPSON PowerLite 5000XB/7000XB Service Manual

Cautions for Field Maintenance

Observe the following procedures when you repair the projector. Otherwise, display quality
is not guaranteed.

Note:
Violating any of the following points voids the manufacturers warranty, and EPSON
repair service will no longer be available.

Do not disassemble the optical block or loosen any screws.

If either the optical block or the driver board requires replacement, replace them as a set.
Also, when you send them back for repair, send them back as a set (optical engine).

Precautions

The following precautions are for the individual assembly and disassembly procedures.
Read them carefully before starting the assembly or disassembly procedure. A set of
general precautions is given below.

As you disassemble the main unit, dust that has collected on the internal fans and air filters
is likely to migrate and contaminate light valves R, G, and B (the heart of the display
mechanism), deteriorating the display quality. To prevent this from occurring, check for dust
inside of the main unit and, if necessary, clean it with a vacuum cleaner before
reassembling. Light valves R, G, and B and circuit board assemblies are highly sensitive to
static electricity. When you remove an optical engine or circuit board, place it in an anti-
static bag immediately.
When you perform the assembly or disassembly operations listed below, check the unit and
its surfaces for any dirt before reinstalling. If the unit is dirty, clean it.
Removing the optical engine
Removing the lamp inner housing
Removing the air filter frame

The speaker unit incorporates a permanent magnet. Keep it away from electromagnetic
media such as floppy disks and magnetic cards.
Handle the optical engine (projector lens and light guide unit) with care. They are highly
susceptible to vibration and shock.
Do not try to disassemble any part that is not covered in this manual (for example, the
optical engine or power supply unit).
