STUDY GUIDE FOR EnvS 152 FINAL EXAMINATION


THE GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION OF GOODS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Please note this aid is provided only as assistance and is not to be considered
comprehensive. The final is comprehensive covering the entire semester including
required readings, assignments and presentations. Students are always welcome, of
course, to meet with me during office hours to discuss the exam, the pending essay,
current grade, or any issue of the course.

1. Alphabet soup: know acronyms, goals, and purposes of organizations


discussed in the course. Be aware that each acronym used discussed by the
groups may be on the exam. Following is a brief sample:
a. WTO (I suggest you look at the WTO website)
b. ISO, goals, purpose (note that the acronym and the spelling is
different)
c. EMS (from ISO 14000) what it is, purpose of, mechanism,

d. IMF and the World Bank: Purpose and goals
e. NAFTA (I suggest you review the TS and perhaps the references)
f. GATT (preceded WTO)
g. Montreal and Kyoto Protocols and why they are important agreements
and how they are different.
h. DSD duales system deutschland/Green Dot, WEEE waste
electrical and electronic equipment directive and ROHS
restriction of hazardous substances: Purpose, goals, materials
effected, where effective (geographically).
2. Definitions of free trade and fair trade
3. Definition of Industrial Ecology, be able to discuss itthoroughly and all its
relationships to issues
4. E-waste definition
5. Be able to clearly distinguish positive and negative attributes of NAFTA and
WTO trade agreements.
6. Be able to distinguish and define science from pseudoscience
7. Poverty issues relations to trade (discuss how trade influences increasing or
decreasing poverty).
8. Positive and negative aspects of container vessels re: environment and trade
9. Positive qualities for those who claim ecotourism
10. Beneficial qualities and components of an LCA. Know the components,
where impacts are and why.
11. Purpose, goals and limitations of the ecological footprint.
