CLUB HISTORY
Students Club was founded in 1948 by a
group of students of the Institute Ramiro
de Maeztu, supported by one teacher:
Antonio Magarios. As in those beginnings
were not allowed to compete with the name
of the school, they decided to choose a
name related with what they were actually
doing, so they pick the name of: students.
Students planted a seed that was slowly
germinating.
In 1955 came the first title, the old Castilla
Championship, and in 1957 the Estu was
one of the founding teams of the first
National League. Since then, hes always
played in the top flight, achievement that
only shared with the basketball section of
Real Madrid and Joventut, but unfortunately
theyve dropped the ACB this year.
PHILOSOPHY.
The Movistar Estudiantes
Team is focused on the youth
basketball, being the best
reserve in Spain and one of
the better in Europe.
In minibasket they try to
encourage the players to
practice 1vs1

FACTS ABOUT THE TRAINER.
Name: Ins Orselli.

Studies: Magisterio (Primaria)
Experience: Training kids since she was 16 (now shes 23)
Training in the club for one year.
How she works with her group: She focus on training passes,
both hand dribble, lay-ups and easy shots. (This is because of
the philosophy of the team in this ages)
PLAYERS.
In this age and this level the players are clearly separated into 2 moods:
First Mood:
- There are the players who love the basketball. You can even feel it just watching how they play. In this
group we have:
Pelayo: For me, its the kid with more talent. Hes fast, shoots good and he loves the game, playing smiling
all the time, although hes a bit rascal. The trainer really thinks he can play in a high level.
Daro: Its the kid I liked the most. Dribbling is so good, while playing hes always focused, and hes also so
funny. Defending hes the best, making serious blocks while the game. He also shoots the basket very well.
Pablo: Hes a tall kid, so he has a little advantage. However, hes good making great lay-ups.
igo: Hes another tall kid in the group. He has to improve the left hand control, but he also loves what
hes doing and puts his 100%.
Mario: Hes a really fast kid. While the practices he didnt show it, but in the game he did some great plays.
He hardly ever shoots the ball when he can avoid it.
Dylan: Hes a kind kid, but his level of game is not the best. He has to improve the lefted lay-up because he
has serious troubles sometimes.
Csar: Hes a clever kid with a good ball-handling. He likes to shoot the basketball more than making lay-
ups.
Second Mood.
- In this mood we have players who doesnt show that level of love for
the basketball. They dont play very well, so they need to improve.
Mateo: Hes a kind kid. Hes not totally concentrated while the
practice so he always do mistakes. Also he always apologizes.
Vctor and Miguel: These two are similar. They love to play games
and stu like these, but they are not into basketball. They need to
improve the dribbling and the lay-up.
Arnau: Hes a special kid. He doesn't feel like hes focused on what
hes doing, so many times he does things bad. He always regrets, but
he needs to improve the focus.
Nicols: He didnt appear to the practices that week.
PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT.
1. Motivational speech with the players.
- The trainer starts the training preparing the players psychologically. Total Time:3

2. Variation of tagging. Palomas y gavilanes

- Two players, the Gavilanes, are in the half of the court, without any ball, faced to
the rest of the team,Las Palomas whom are in one half-court, all with ball. They
would try to go to the another dribbling, while the Gavilanes try to catch them.
Once theyve touched them, they left the ball and became part of the team of
Gavilanes.

- Variations: Go to the another side-court bouncing with dierent hands, depending

of the trainer.

- Objetives: Prepare physically the players after have prepared them psychologically

- Total Time: 5
3. Lay-ups in pairs.
- Explanation: 40 seg.
- Players, in pairs and with one ball for each of them, moves
around the court passing, dribbling and making lay-ups.
- Objetives: Practice dribbling, make good passes and a strong
lay-up.
My variations: I would prefer to divide time in type of passes
- Total Time: 4 and dribbles, variating as a trainer. Otherwise players keep
doing the same role of dribble and passing. For example:
-1 min normal.
-1 min With Right handed Bounce Pass and doing lay-ups with
the right hand.
-1 min with left handed bounce pass and doing lay-ups with the
left hand.
-1 min with a dribble size-up before passing. Finishing is free.
4. Attacking the rim in pairs.
- There are two queues faced in the middle of the court. Each queue score in a
dierent basket. Two players are hitting passes between them, and when the
trainer say Now! the player who has the ball runs to his basket and try to make a
lay-up while the another player is defending him.

- Objetives: The trainer focused in intensity, motivating the players to run faster and
reward them when their able to make a strong lay-up. The trainer also correct if
they do a bad type of attack. The trainer also get serious if some of them shots the
ball.

- Variations: No variations included for this exercise.

- Total Time: 7
My variations:
I would include focusing in the lay-up steps, because some of the
players did travel a couple of times.
I alsod include rounds in which the players dont know where
theyre scoring, so the player who has the ball when the trainer say
now! chooses the basket and the defender pursues him.
I would change the type of passing in each round.
When NOW!
4.
5. The braid + Defense.
- As we can see in the title of the drill, it has an attack part and a defense one.

- Attack part: The player whos starting the drill, has the ball and he passes to the
right player, whos running. This player is now going to make a pass to the left
player, whos now the most advanced. Hes going to pass again to the first player,
wholl make a lay-up. (if not the rebound has priority, each of the three are able to
make a lay-up)

- Defense part: Now, the player who made the lay-up is going to run towards his
own basket, defending in adversity, now that the another 2 players are going to
score in counter. (the counter has not pattern, so players are free to decide)

- Once theyve scored, the ball is passed to the start, for starting again.

- ROTATION: The rotation is all based in right-rotation. Start goes right, and right
goes left.
- Objetives: The trainer stayed focused on correcting:

Pass. Defense:

- Hand-finished. -Run until the half court

and then face the attackers
- Good momentum. (1vs 2)
- Overhead passes in 2v1 attack. -Open the arms.
On finishing. -Be strong and go for the
-Run strong so the pass can be thrown. block!
- Focus on making a strong lay-up.
- Also, if any of the players doesnt get the rebound, all the 3 goes out.

- Variations: No variations were included in this drill.

- Total Time: 9
5. ATTACK PART.
Note:
DEFENSE PART.
The earlier attacker
becomes a defender.
Both of the defenders
also turn into
attackers
6. 1vs1 attacking and defending.
- (1st part). Players in pairs and with one ball each pair. One of
the pair is going to attack the rim while the defender try to
stop him. The defender catches the rebound.
- (2 part). The attacker is going to run by the sideline through
the another rim. The defender, who now has the ball, is going
to make a baseball pass to the attacker, making an assist.
- Then, players will rotate roles.
- Objetives: Be strong defending and attacking. Also the
priority is to make a good pass.
- Variants: No variants are included in this drill.
- Total Time: 7
- Gear: two cones.
6. ATTACK PART.
Water Rest: 2
7. Crazy Baskets:
- In this drill each one has his own ball, and each one has to
make 10 shots under the basket, throwing the ball against the
blackboard.
- Variations: No variations were included in this drill.
- Objetives: Make the shot against the blackboard. Not a lay-up.
- Total Time: 5
My variations:
I would alternate the number of baskets, instead
hitting the 10 in the same, hitting 2 rounds of 5 in
both, so it could be more competitive.
Id also include a price for the winner.
8. Dribbling in pairs.
- In this drill the players are again in pairs, one dribbling the
ball and another just watching and correcting.
- The trainer indicates when the type of dribbling has to
change.
- Objetives: Practice dribbling. Keep the head up.
- Variations: With eyes closed, his bounce, low bounce,
alternating hands bounce, single legged bounce etc.
- Total Time: 6 (2x3)

My variations:
I would include the fact that the players are who
say when the partner should change the way of
dribbling
9. All the way around the apple
- In this drill the player whos in start are going to make 2 lay-
ups, one in each basket. The rest of the players are going to be
spread in dierent sections of the court. He starts passing the
ball to the person in the right square, for receiving the pass
later. Hes going to make the same with all the players until he
makes the 2 attempts. There are two balls for this drill, and
the whole team must scream out-load the total of baskets.
- Rotation: Is always based on the right. The player who catches
the rebound will start.
- Objetives: Make 30 lay-ups. She also stayed focused on:

Passing:
Rebounding:
-One bounce max (To make the drill fast)
-Catch the ball as quick as possible.
Intensity:
We must give our 100%.

- Variants: No were included for this drill.

- Total Time: 95
10. 8-0 Baskets in teams:
- 8 players in each half-court. All with ball.

- The teams starts shooting out of the zone and in of the 3-pointers line. As they are
scoring, they are counting the number of baskets. As they make the 8th, They now
have to score 7 in the another halfcourt. Then 6,5,4,3,2,1, and finally the last.

- Objetives: No objetives were included for this drill.

- Variations: No variations were included for this drill.

- Total Time: 335

11. 3vs3 Situations.
- This is an intense drill, kind of similar of the drills weve done
lately in class. There are 3 players in each half-court, and the
exercise starts with another 3 attacking in one rim. If they gets
the bucket, they get a free throw and starts attacking in the
another half court. If not, they stay in that half court defending
while the another 6 plays. The trainer will judge faults.
- Objetives: Keep head up, try to read the situation and get the
bucket and the free trow. Defense intense for keep playing.
- Variants: No variants were included.
- Total time:
REFLECTION
This was a good practice which was useful for me because it
gave me a good view of the youth team.
The development was correct, and I liked the way that the
trainer did it.
If I work with youth in the future, Ill consider the option of
made the players to hold the ball with them knees while Im
taking.
2ND PRACTICE.
PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT.
1. Motivational speech with the players.
- The trainer starts the training preparing the players psychologically. Total
Time:3
2. Warm-Up Game: The Chain.
- This game is a variation of tagging. It starts with all the players with a
ball except one, who starts tagging and making a large chain (all the
tagged players should grab each others hands to make a chain) which is
completed when all the players get tagged.
- If any of the players step outside the court gets tagged too.
- Objetives: Prepare physically all the players.
- Total time: 5
3. One-handed way to he basket.
- Were making this drill as a competition, using only one hand (left or right) in one
queue. This drill starts with two of them in both sides of the basket. All of them with
a ball and holding a SETA with the non-dribbling hand.
- The players start dribbling the ball before they jump with both feet the 3 SETAS.
- After that theyll do the cross without changing the dribble hand and make the layup
using only that hand while making the shot. (Both handed Lay-Ups wont count).
- After making the shot, they may sprint dribbling and returning the SETA to the next
member of the team.
- When the competition gets to the half, queues will change position.
- The loser team will pick up the material.
- Objetives: Practice the isolated one handed dribbling. Increase diculty making the
lay-up.
- Total time: 9
4.Crossing up the queue
- This drill will be performed as a competition.
- It starts with the team divide in two parallel queues, both facing
the center of the court, starting from the same baseline.
- With all the players with a one arm distance, the last player of
each queue will start crossing the whole queue, advancing till the
top, and then passing the ball to the last member of his group.
- The team who reaches the half court first will win.
- Objetives: Practice dribbling. Trainer also insist about keeping the
head up.
- Total time: 530
My variations:
-Id include a one handed drill if you are only able to bounce with one hand in each queue
changing queue after one time.
5. Vital Cicle Drill.
- This drill will be done in pairs. One member in each queue, but together.
- It starts when a Player 1(queue one) simulates one rebounding situation,
throwing the ball against the blackboard and then catching it, while Player 2
(queue two) is running. Player 1 should make a baseball pass to him, and
then player 2 makes the lay-up.
- Automatically after, player 2 will sprint dribbling the ball (he gets the
rebound) and then making a baseball-pass to Player 1, so he can make a lay-
up.
- Objetives: Practicing counter situations. Practice the baseball pass and the
lay-up. It must be strong and eective.
- Total time: 6
Water Break. 2
5. FIRST PART.

6. Superiority Drill.
In this drill well be working on superiority situations.
- Team is divided in two groups, one in each sideline.
- The starter team starts with one player, alone in the court, making a easy
lay-up. After that one player of Team 2 starts trying to make a bucket in
the another basket, so the another player starts defending him.
- Now, Team 1 starts the attack with 2 players (team 2 only has one) and
after making the shot, team 2 attacks in a balanced situation.
- This exercise will finish whither 5vs 5 situation.
- Objetives: Be aware in the superiority. Also in defense: Be strong, with a
good defense position.
- Total time: 15
7.Dizzy Duck.
- This drill will start with all the players making groups to three, each
group with one ball. One member in the middle trying to catch the
passes of the other two.
- The players only can do lateral shifting, being not able to move
forward or backwards. The Dizzy Duck (The player who is in the
middle of the three) will try to catch the passes that the another
players are making to themselves.
- With stroking the ball is enough.
- Objetives: Practice the ability of catching passes. (And making them).
Practice defense in faults.
- Total time: 5
8. 1,2,3,4!!!!!.
- This drill starts with all the players with a ball, dribbling around
the court. When the trainer shout 1!, all the players will run
until be inside the 6,25m RIGHT line.
- When 2! the player will go into the center circle, with the same
dynamic.
- When 3! The players will go inside the LEFT 6,25m line.
- When 4! The players will go outside any line.
- Objetives: End the practice with a competition while keep
practicing the dribble.
- Total time: 6

My variations:
Id include isolated- handed times. (For example 3 rounds of 1 with both hands)
REFLECTION.
In the second practice Pablo suered a injury that stopped the
practice for 15 mins. After that he started playing again.
As it was the previous practice after the game, it was focused
on dribbling, defending and now, the advantage situations.
The trainer remembered them the importance to be intense,
motivating them to the next match.
ANALYSIS OF THE TRANSFERENCE BETWEEN PRACTICE AND COMPETITION.

This is the first year that this team participates into

competitions, before they had only played in practices, so it
was like a journey for the trainer. Since the beginning of the
season she has been paying more attention in which se
thought it was the most important things. She started with
dribbling and 1vs1, focusing after on lay-ups and shoots,
finishing the season work with advantage situations.
MATCH DEVELOPMENT.
Estudiantes Vs Buen Consejo. Location: El Internado.
BEFORE START PLAYING.
1. Motivational speech with the players.
- The trainer starts the training preparing the players psychologically. Total Time:3

2. Lay-Up Warm Up.

- Players will be in the centre circle in pairs forming two queues, facing
their basket.
- Both will start running, one player will pass the ball so the other makes
a lay-up.
- Then theyll change queue positions. First all the lay-ups will be made
with the right hand, then itll be the opposite.
- Objetives: Warm up the lay-up so we can increase the following
percentage.
- Total Time: 10
MATCH. 38 EST - 34 BC.
The match was a highly intense one, although it was the last of all the year and it
wouldnt modificative any stats.
Estudiantes was winning the whole match with a little advantage.
Defense was so crucial in this game. Csar did three incredible blocks, and they
defend really good. Pelayo did a couple of good crossovers ending with great lay-ups.
The team played with passion and intensity, motivating each others.
The trainer also chase correctly the player who every one had to defend. The whole
team played very well, trying to keep the advantage. In the last minutes of the last
half, the players of the Buen Consejo started stealing a lot of passes and then making
the counter, reducing the lead to 2 points.
But the lasts possessions were crucial for the game and for the players of the
Estudiantes, with Csar being able to make a lead of 4 points before the game
finishes.
The trainer did a really good job motivating the players, showing her quality against
the another trainer, who didnt stop demotivating his players.
TEAM.
There are some really good players in this youth team. Pelayo,
Csar, igo and Pablo did play good basketball and you can
see it in the way theyre playing, always intense, willing to get
the bucket or to make a good pass, always smiling.
There are another players such as Arnau, Miguel, etc that they
have to improve and pay more attention while training, if not
their future in this club is questionable.
Also the Trainer really showed how good works done. She
always had the perfect energy in the trains and the players
really like and admire her.
ALTERNATIVE PRACTICE.
Palomas y Gavilanes.
- Ive explained this drill before because they already did it. Ive
chosen it because I really like the way they worked with it.
- Variations: Go to the another side-court bouncing with
dierent hands, depending of the trainer.
- Objetives: Prepare physically the players after have prepared
them psychologically
- Total Time: 5
3. Lay-ups in pairs.
This is the way Id do the drill theyve already made. I would prefer
to divide time in type of passes and dribbles, variating as a trainer.
Otherwise players keep doing the same role of dribble and passing.
For example:
-1 min normal.
-1 min With Right handed Bounce Pass and doing lay-ups with the
right hand.
-1 min with left handed bounce pass and doing lay-ups with the left
hand.
-1 min with a dribble size-up before passing. Finishing is free.

- Objetives: Practice dribbling, make good passes and a strong lay-

up.
- Total Time: 8 (2 rounds)
I dont know where you scores Drill.
- Two players are facing each other, the rest are in the queues behind them.
- These players are constantly passing the ball to each other.

I d include rounds in which the players dont know where theyre scoring,
so the player who has the ball when the trainer say now! chooses the
basket and the defender pursues him.
I would change the type of passing in each round. (chest pass, bounce
righted pass and bounce lefted pass)

- Objetives: Practice passing and the lay-up must be strong

- Total Time: 10 (3 round each player)
8. Dribbling in pairs.
- In this drill the players are again in pairs, one dribbling the ball a
the another player have the chance to made him change the way
dribbling. (variations)
- Objetives: Practice dribbling. Keep the head up.
- Variations: With eyes closed, his bounce, low bounce, alternati
hands bounce, single legged bounce etc.
- Total Time: 10
1,2,3,4!!!!!.
- This drill starts with all the players with a ball, dribbling around th
court. When the trainer shout 1!, all the players will run until b
inside the 6,25m RIGHT line.
- When 2! the player will go into the center circle, with the sam
dynamic.
- When 3! The players will go inside the LEFT 6,25m line.
- When 4! The players will go outside any line.
- Objetives: keep practicing the dribble.
- Variations: In this drill well use only isolated hands, aprox 40 fo
each hands, replaying rounds
- Total time: 6
6. Superiority Drill.
In this drill well be working on superiority situations.
- Team is divided in two groups, one in each sideline.
- The starter team starts with one player, alone in the court, making
a easy lay-up. After that one player of Team 2 starts trying to make
a bucket in the another basket, so the another player starts
defending him.
- Now, Team 1 starts the attack with 2 players (team 2 only has one)
and after making the shot, team 2 attacks in a balanced situation.
- This exercise will finish whither 5vs 5 situation.
- Objetives: Be aware in the superiority. Also in defense: Be strong,
with a good defense position.
- Total time: 15
7. Crazy Baskets:
- In this drill each one has his own ball, and each one has to
make 2 rounds of 5 baskets in both, so it would be more
competitive.
