Introduction
In almost all the manufacturing industries where ever there is
complete assembly line automation like bottling plant, chemical
industries, food processing and packaging industries a
conveyor belt is ultimate and widely used option. The entire
process is carried on single (or multiple) conveyor belt(s). From
start to end the items are moving on belt and the processes are
done in between, while they are moving. It is important to
monitor and perhaps control the movement of motors driving
the conveyor belts. This project will detect the movement of the
belt in as far as direction is concerned i.e. forward, reverse and
braking of the motor. The project will also have a sensor to
detect pile up at places where the belts join and perhaps light a
bulb or sound an alarm to alert to operators.

Aim
To start and control a motor driving a conveyor belt in terms of
motion direction and perhaps speed.

Objectives

To remote start a conveyor belt

To drive the motor forward, reverse and soft braking

To detect pile up where conveyor belts join

Sound an alarm in case of pile ups and automatically stop the

conveyor.

Motor

The motor is responsible for moving the belt. A 220V ac motor

is ideal for the application but in this prototype, a 12V DC motor
is proposed.

The sensor

This device is simply a proximity switch which will detect pile

up at points where the conveyor belt joins. If pile up is
detected, an alarm is sound to alert the operator. Pile up is
detected by virtue of making the contacts of the switch make.

Microcontroller
The microcontroller processes data from the sensor and thus
operates the belt accordingly. It also sends commands to the
motor to control direction, speed and soft braking. It is also
responsible of communicating with the l.c.d and thus sends text
messages to show the system current status.

The l.c.d

This is a 16 by 2 characters display that will display messages

generated by the microcontroller. A 4 bit serial communication
interface is going to be used in this case.

Control buttons

The control buttons are there to specify the state of the motor
i.e. input direction (forward or reverse) and braking. The staring
and stopping of the motor is also inputted here

Budget

Since the project is still under design, components values and

sizes could not be provided but the estimate budget is
projected as follows
Materials $150.00

Labour $50.00

Miscellaneous $50.00

Total cost is projected to be $250 .00
