IN THE GRAY WING

Special Block Buster Exhibition! Ralph Bacerra: Exquisite Beauty
Collectors and viewers alike will relish this rare opportunity to view and acquire ceramic
masterpieces by Ralph Bacerra during Exquisite Beauty at the San Luis Obispo Museum
of Art through April 2, 2017.
Ralph Bacerra (19382008) was a Los Angelesbased ceramics artist known for
creating meticulous ceramic vessels and sculptures adorned with complex patterns
and mesmerizing color. Jo Lauria, a noted independent arts curator and author who
specializes in decorative arts, crafts, and design, was Mr. Bacerras student. Inspired by
the undisputed master of surface decoration in ceramics, Jo Lauria curated Exquisite
Beauty for Otis College of Art and Designs Ben Matz Gallery in 2015 and is guest
curating this exhibition at SLOMA.
Mr. Bacerra had a profound influence on the ceramic art world. Minimalism and
abstraction ruled the trends of the day; decoration and china painting were looked down
upon. Bacerra challenged current conventions by combining Asian decorative ceramic
traditions with boundary-pushing elements like aggregated design motifs and optical
inventions. He utilized labor-intensive finishes to produce incredibly opulent artworks.
Mr. Bacerra served as the head of ceramics at Chouinard from 19641971, then worked
asa studio artist for ten years. He went back to teaching at Otis Art Institute in 1982,
serving as chair of ceramics from 19831996. Mr. Bacerra shared a special camaraderie
with his studentsmany of whom are now prominent artists in their own right. u

The Central Coast Photographic Society
presents New Visions 2017 in the Gray

matter welcomed photographers to delve
into all subjects, themes, and motifs that
expose new images in the world today.
The juror, George Lepp, selected 49
photographs from the 164 submissions.
Mr. Lepp made the following observation
after viewing all the images: Its been
many years since Ive judged an exhibit
for the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art
and I very much enjoyed experiencing
the advances in content, creativity, and
technique being demonstrated by the
photographic community in this collection.
The variety of subjects and techniques
will appeal to photographers and non-
photographers; theres a lot to see and take
in! All of the participants, and the Museum
of Art should be very proud of the New
Visions 2017 competition and exhibition.
