2 COMMUNICATION
2.2.1 Definition of Human Communication
According to Frank Dance and Carl Larson (1973, cited in interpersonal
communication 1996, P.7) they have surveyed the definition of human
communications. They obtained 126 difference definition about communication. We
can conclude that the definition of human communication is depended on the
individual think. If we also have one logic idea about the communication meaning,
we can also consider it as definition.

2.2.2 Features of Human Communication.


Communication is the process whereby humans collective create and regulate
social reality (Interpersonal Communication,1996, P.8). Characteristic of
communication are divided into many parts.

(a) Communication as process.


We can say that communication has own flow. The flow that sometimes we can
predict and sometimes cannot.
(b) Communication as uniquely Human.
The human communication is interesting because when animal communicate
each other, they use some signal, or body language. But for human, we have
specific language that we can use to interact with each other.

(c) Human as collective activity.


Communication and human society are depending on each other When there is
no communication, the human society will not exist. It means that communication
help human to interact with other to produce better environment to our society.
2.3 INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION.
2.3.1 What is interpersonal communication.
Generally, interpersonal communication is defined as interaction between two
or more people in personally or not. I t is exist on a continuum from impersonal to
interpersonal. There are three levels of communication, I-it, I-You, I-Thou (Martin
Buber,1970).

2.3.2 Importance of effective interpersonal communication.


It is important for us to have a good skill in communication that enables us to
better understand and build the relationship with the people around us. The
effectiveness of good communication help us to respect the other ideas and trust
and resolve the differences. Bad of communication leads disunity in the
organization. Five ways are required for competence in communication skills. First
developing range. Next adapting them appropriately to goals. Engaging in dual
perspective. Monitoring communication and impact. Lastly, commuting to effective
and ethical interpersonal communication (Julia T. Wood,2013).

2.3.3 Principle of interpersonal communication.


The principle of communication helps us to know on how to make the
communication more interesting, (Julia T. Wood, 2013) said that the first principle is
we cannot not communicate. It means that we must give the best attention to the
person that communicate to us and dont avoid the conversation. Other than that,
interpersonal communication is irreversible. Beware of what we want to say and
control the emotion with each other when communicate because once we said a
bad thing, it cannot be take back. Lastly, interpersonal communication involves
ethical changes. Ethical communication occurs when people create relationship of
equality, when they attend mindfully to each other and when their communication
demonstrated that they are authentic. Richard Johannesen (1996,cited in Julia T.
Wood,2013).
