Baofeng UV-5r/IPhone APRS setup

Items Required:

1. Baofeng UV-5r
2. IPhone (Does not need a cell service)
3. A custom made cable (A crossover cable with 3.5mm plugs)
4. IPhone App PocketPacket

Setup Baofeng UV-5r

1. Setup FREQ to 144.390 MHz

2. Set TX Power to HIGH
3. Set VOX to 10
4. Set OFFSET to 0

Create Cable

1. Purchase a cable from store that would plug in your phone to your car stereo. (Something
like this http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=19732556)
2. Purchase a packet of 3.5mm stereo plugs
(http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2104061&znt_campaign=Categ
ory_CMS&znt_source=CAT&znt_medium=RSCOM&znt_content=CT2032231)
3. Cutoff both ends of the cable you purchased and strip the black insulation away about 2-3
revealing a red wire, black wire, and bare wires (this is the ground)
4. Strip off about -1/2 of the red and black wire.
5. Twist each wire to tighten the wire.
6. Preheat solder gun
7. Tin some solder onto the end of the wires. (Basically melt some solder onto the tip of each
wire. This helps when you go to solder it to the connection on the plug)
8. Solder the bare wire to the long piece on both connectors. (This is the ground)
9. On one connector, solder the red and black wires to one connector each. (It doesnt matter
which one gets soldered where. We are creating a crossover cable, so it wont matter)
10. On the opposite connector you are going solder the red and black wires to the opposite
connectors. (This cross over the wires and allows you to not worry about which side is
plugged into where)
11. Button up your plugs and your wire is ready to go.

Setup IPhone

1. Download PocketPacket (I think its like $3.99 or something)

2. Open PocketPacket and click on Settings
3. Enter Callsign
4. Enable Track Location (You can enable Report Altitude if you want)
5. Select your symbol
6. Add a Comment if you want
7. Adjust TX Interval (I have mine set to 2 minutes, but will probably make it shorter when out
in the field)
8. Then scroll down to APRS-IS Connection
9. Make it Enabled
10. Enable Transmit
11. Passcode (Go to this website http://callpass.kf5jwc.us/ and enter your callsign to get your
passcode)
12. Audio Modem (Ignore all this, make sure it is not enabled.)

Setup whole system

1. Plug cable into IPhone

2. Plug the other end into the MIC port on the Baofeng
3. Turn on Baofeng
4. Turn on PocketPacket
5. Go to http://aprs.fi and search for your callsign.

APRS.fi

1. After the system is setup proceed to website.

2. Enter your call sign in the TRACK CALLSIGN field over on the right hand side.
3. Once the map finds you, you can see the status of your beacon. (I mainly look at the update
timer to make sure the system is updating when it is supposed)

If you have any questions, let me know and I will try to answer them the best I can.

F.A.Q. & Tips

1. Basically you are using the IPhone for its GPS chip, the app is transmitting this data, through
MIC port just as if you were using a VOX Microphone.

2. Do not touch the AUDIO MODEM section, this is if you were going to try and use the speakers
on the IPhone instead of the cable.
