CourseDescription:
StudiessurficialgeologyofthePacificNorthwest,includingstreams,groundwater,coastlines,
landslides,glaciers,lakes,anddeserts.IncludesgeomorphicprovincesofOregon,topographic
mapsandprofiles,IceAgefloods,GeologicTime,andgeologiccrosssections.

UponsuccessfulcompletionoftheSciencecourse,studentsshouldbeableto:
1. Gather,comprehend,andcommunicatescientificandtechnicalinformationinorderto
exploreideas,models,andsolutionsandgeneratefurtherquestions.
2. Applyscientificandtechnicalmodesofinquiry,individually,andcollaboratively,to
criticallyevaluateexistingoralternativeexplanations,solveproblems,andmake
evidencebaseddecisionsinanethicalmanner.
3. Assessthestrengthsandweaknessesofscientificstudiesandcriticallyexaminethe
influenceofscientificandtechnicalknowledgeonhumansocietyandtheenvironment.

1. SummarizePlateTectonicsasthecriticalframeworkwhichcontrolsallgeologic
processes.
2. Interprettopographicmapsandusethemtoanswerquestionsaboutthelandscape,
includingstreamcharacteristics.
3. Createatopographicprofileanduseittointerpretlocalgeology.
4. Distinguishbetweenthetwomaintypesofrockweatheringandtheircontribution
tosoilformationandsoilprofiles.
5. Identifythetypesandcausesofmasswastingevents,recognizelandslideterrain,
anddiscussthemitigationofslopefailures.
6. Identifyanddescribestreamcharacteristicsandeffectssuchasgradient,discharge,
sedimentationanderosion.Compareandcontrastcharacteristicsofvariousstreams
inOregon.
7. Describecharacteristicsoflakeandlakebasins,andclassifysomeofthelakesand
lakebasinsinOregon.Recognizetherolesoflandslides,glaciersandfaultsin
forminglakebasins.
8. Learnthebasicsofgroundwater,anditsassociatedkarsttopography,anddiscuss
theimportanceofconservationandprotectionofthisvaluableresource.
9. Explaintheeffectsofglaciersinthepresentday:theirerosionalanddepositional
landformsandinfluenceonOregonsgeomorphicprovinces.
10. DiscusscausesofIceAgesandtheIceAgeglacialeventsthatshapedtheWillamette
Valley.
11. Explaintheworkofthewindandformationsofdeserts,andoutlinethedesert
geomorphologyoftheOregonBasinandRangeandOwyheeUplands.

MidTerm/FinalExams:Themidtermandfinalareworth50and100pointseach,respectively.
Theexamsareamixofmultiplechoice,true/false,shortanswer,andessayquestionsbasedon
thelectures,activities,homework,andcoursereading.Midtermexamscoverthematerial
sincethebeginningofthecourse.Thefinaliscumulative.

Quizzes:Thereareninequizzes.Thesequizzeswillcoverthereadingmaterialthatisassigned
fortheclass.Forexample,quiz#2willcovermaterialfoundinChapter2andsections11.411.6.
Thesequizzesareworth20pointseach.

Participation:Studentswillbegivenupto100pointsforparticipatinginclass.Fullcreditwillbe
givenifstudentsattendregularly,askandanswerquestionsinclass,andparticipateinclass
discussion.Whenstudentsconductinbehaviorthatisnotrespectful(asoutlinedinthe
syllabus),theyjeopardizetheirparticipationgrade.

Missinganexam:Allmakeupexamsshouldbearrangedforinadvance.Intheeventofan
emergencyorsuddenillnessthatpreventsyoufromattendingtheexam,youmustcontactme
assoonaspossibleandarrangeatimefortheexamtobecompletedbeforeournextregular

CourseNotesandIllustrations:Eachlecturemayincludehandouts(ofthepresentationforthat

day.Youwilluseyournotebooktocopyandlabelanyillustrations.Youarerequiredtohavea
threeringbindercontainingthesehandoutsandyournotestakenduringeveryclass.The
notebookswillalsocontainallyourcoursematerials(labs,syllabus,exams,etc.).Youwillturn
inyournotebooksalongwithyouractivitiesandhomeworkthathasbeencompletedthrough
thesemester.Yourmaterialmustbewellorganizedwithinthenotebook.Thesewillbe
evaluatedduringthefinal.Creditof100pointsisgivenforcarefulreproductionofthe
illustrationsincludinganynotes,labels,andgraphs.

Labs:Eachweekwewillhavealabexercisewhichisintendedtosupportourlearningforthe
materialcoveredinthelecture,activities,andreading.Eachlabisdueattheendofclassandis
worth20points.

theweekthattheyarelistedinthesyllabus.Theseonlinelabsmustbecompletedpriortothe
nextclass.Therewillbesometaskstocompleteandturninelectronically.

LibraryResearch:Thereisonelibraryresearchassignmentthatisworth50points.Choose
somethingrelatedtorivers,lakes,ordesertsinthePacificNorthwestanddosomelibrary
researchaboutthatsubject.ThereportswillbetypedinTimesNewRomanfontsize12,double

FieldTrips:WewillhaveonedaylongfieldtriptoMollalaStatePark.Thiswilloccurona
Sundayandislistedinthesyllabus.Thisaremandatory.Eachstudentwillturninafieldtrip
report.ThereportswillbetypedinTimesNewRomanfontsize12,doublespaced,andturned
inelectronicallypriortothefollowingclass.Thereportswillbethreetofivepages.Therewill

Classwillstartontimeat1:00PM.Youareresponsibletobepresentforandbeattentivetoall
thematerialcoveredinclass.Ifyouneedtoleavetheclassearly,pleaseletmeknowbeforethe
classstarts.

Thisisacollegelevelscienceclass,andwillrequireacommitmentofyourtimeoutsideofclass.
Thisathometimewillenableyoutodigestthematerialwecoverinclassandhelpwhenyou
areaskedontheexamstoapplytheseconceptstodifferentproblemsandapplications.

Youwillspend12to18hoursperweekoncoursematerialoutsideofclass,onaverage.Youare
encouragedtosetasideaspecifictimeeachweekoutsideofclassdevotedsolelytoeach
course:

o Studyingforexams

Notethat8hoursperweekathomeistheaverageminimumtopass.Somestudentsmay

Astudentwhoisveryattentiveinclass,asksquestions,andtakescarefulnoteswillneedless
athometime.

Absences:Itisextremelydifficulttodowellinthisclasswithoutattendingallthelectures.I
understandtherewillbeanoccasionalabsenceduetoillnessoremergency,howeverIconsider
morethantwoabsencespersemesterexcessive.Ifyoudomissaclass:
1.Obtainthecoursematerialonline(PowerPointslides,extrareading,andhandouts).The
slideswillincludeinformationaboutanyhomeworkorinclassexercisesthatwere
assigned.Mostassignmentsandhandoutsreferencedbytheslideswillbeinyour

2.Next,trytoobtainacopyoflecturenotesfromaclassmatesincetherearemanythings
wecoverthatarenotspelledoutdirectlyontheslidesorhandouts.Thisisthemost
importantstep.
3.Readtherequiredreadingcoveringthematerialyoumissed.
4.Afterthis,feelfreetocontactmebyemailwithanyquestions.

Finalgradeactiveattendanceboost:Ifyourfinalcoursegradeafterroundingtothenearest
wholenumberiswithin1pointofagradetransition(CtoC+,DtoC,AtoA,etc.)Iwillgiveyou
theboostneededtoobtainthehighergradeifyouhaveactivelyattendedmostclassesand
