Lesson: Rounding Decimals

Unit Overview
Main Idea (Claim) Summative Assessment
Strengthen the basic knowledge on Mathematics Final Exam
to solve further or more complicated
Mathematics problem. The Bible talks about
number especially in the Old Testament, for
example Tabernacle and its measurement. God
instructed many prophets with numbers too. As
God gave number an appreciation, we need to
do the same thing as how God has modeled.

Guiding Questions Objectives (know/understand/do/value)

The student will . . .
1. What does rounding number mean? 1. Understand what rounding number
2. How to round decimal numbers to the means.
nearest tenths or whole number 2. Be able to round decimal numbers to the
nearest tenths or and whole numbers
Time Instructional Procedures and Strategies
Preparations
1. Videos: 7 Billion by National Grographic (

2. Rounding number coloring sheets: (Modified from color squared)
3. Rounding number worksheets
4. Popsicle name sticks
5. Printed out steps on rounding decimals to the nearest whole number
5 mins 6. Colored pencil or crayons
Beginning the Lesson
1. Intro to Rounding:
a. Human Population: Teacher will ask the students:
i. How many are the human population is?
ii. How do you think the government or the organization who count the
population, do the counting?
b. Examples of Rounding: Teacher will show the students the video about the
world population. Then ask the students:
i. Do you think the world population is an exact 7 billion?
ii. Did the government count it one by one or is it just a guessing or
estimate number?
c. Definition of Rounding: If a student can answer estimation, teacher will say,
Yes! It is just an estimation made by the government or the organization that
10 count the population. They chose the closest number that can represent the
mins population. This is what we call, rounding! Rounding means figuring out
which one is closer to a number. It is basically like giving estimation and
most of the time in a sentence, it comes up with the word about or around.

Another example, when this book costs around $15. It means the book DOES
NOT COST EXACTLY $15, it can be cheaper or more expensive than $15
dollars. So today, we are going to learn how to round a decimal number
into the nearest ones or whole number.
15 Developing the Lesson
mins 1. Rounding by Making a Number Line:
a. Teacher will draw the number line rom mathworksheet4kids #1. (can be
drawn before the class starts)
b. Then call a student to plot 31.1 on the line.
c. Ask the whole class to guess, Which whole number is closer to 31.1?
d. Then circle the whole number and tell the class, The answer for rounding
31.1 to the nearest whole number is 30
e. Repeat the steps for number line #2
2. Rounding Numbers Method: Now teacher will explain how to round numbers to
the nearest number without number line. GATHER ALL STUDENTS ON THE
CARPET. Teacher will also make a written instruction that they can paste inside
their Math book.
a. Write 3.8 on the white board
b. Ask the students, Because we want to round it to the nearest whole number or
ones, can you show me which one is the whole number, [call out students
name from the Popsicle sticks]? Ask the students to come up and underline
the number.
c. Tell the students, In rounding to the whole number, the most important
number that we need to pay attention at is the tenths. Can you tell me which
one is the tenths, [call out students name from the Popsicle sticks]? After the
particular student answer, the teacher will circle the number.
20 d. Now tell the students while writing the condition in rounding the number. If
mins the tenths or the number that has been circled is 5 or more than 5, we will add
1 to the whole number or the underlined number. If the tenths is less than 5,
we can just simply remove the decimal part of the number.
e. Ask one student from the popsicle stick whether the tenths in this case is more
or less than 5.
f. Then teacher will conclude, Therefore in this case, because 8 is more than 5,
we will add 1 to the whole number and it will be 4. We can round 3.8 into 4
g. Repeat this steps by trying these other 3 numbers: 4.2, 6.29, 12.52
3. Practice Rounding: SHOW THE STUDENTS ALL OF THE WORKSHEET
10 AND MODEL HOW TO DO IT USING THE DOC CAMERA.Give the
mins students the printed out Steps of Rounding Decimal to the Nearest Whole
Number. Ask them to paste it on their math workbook. Then give them the
rounding worksheet. Rounding worksheet will contain of:
a. Rounding with number lines.
b. Rounding without number lines (using the rounding method) Remind
them to underline the whole number and circle the tenths
4. Additional Practice: FOR THE STUDENT WHO HAS DONE THE FIRST
WORKSHEET, teacher will give the Rounding Number Coloring Worksheet and
explain the instruction on the paper. Ask the students to use color pencil or
crayons to color it.

Closing the Lesson

1. Go Through The Answer: [OPTIONAL] If there are still plenty of times, teacher
can go through the answers. MAKE SURE ALL STUDENTS HAS DONE THE
FIRST WORKSHEET.
2. Finish Up: Ask the students to give their book to the teacher and exchange it with
a piece of paper contain a number that they should solve.
3. Exit Slip: Teacher will write a decimal number on a piece of small paper and give
it to the students while the students giving their Math book. Ask them to round the
decimal number on the paper and give it back to the teacher. If they can do it, then
they can leave the class and have a break.
Formative Assessment Differentiation

1. Try rounding on the board 1. The printed rounding method can help
2. Worksheet about rounding number. student who is hard to remember steps in
3. Rounding number coloring sheet. working on future problems.
4. Exit Slip 2. By asking the student to go to the front
one by one, it helps the kinesthetic
learner to understand better because they
are actually doing it.
3. Additional practice for those who has
done the main worksheets.
