Excessive heat generated within electrical distribution systems can (in due course) cause
serious injury to operating personnel as well as damage to the equipment itself, not to
mention the consequences of any outage for production processes and computer networks.
All of which is more than enough reason to keep a close watch on heat generated in your
systems. Or to have it done by a specialist experienced in the field of distribution systems such
as Eaton - Electrical Services & Systems (E-ESS).

Highly accurate recording

Thermography is an extremely reliable method of
inspecting distribution systems. Thermographic
inspection uses an infrared camera to reveal invisible
heat radiation with great accuracy. A (digital) photo is
used to show up this heat radiation. If there is a hot

spot in evidence, it will be shown on the photograph in

conspicuous colours.

Checking
Infrared scanning should be seen as an in-process
check. It provides an indication of thermal loading,
asymmetric loads and discrepancies.
These readings in report format are invaluable and
should be ideally used prior to any planned maintenance
activity. In addition, infrared scanning should be utilised
as a supplement to conventional maintenance, for
instance - during inspection visits, which form part of a
regular time based maintenance regime. Any hidden defects are rapidly pinpointed

Thermographic inspection is more than just producing

E-ESS personnel work with professional equipment
photos which often show some pretty colours. It is
essential to know where any hot spots might occur.
Sound knowledge of electrical distribution systems is an
absolute must for this.
As a manufacturer, Eaton obviously has extensive
knowledge of low-and medium-voltage systems.
Correct interpretation of the photos is also an important
aspect, as are the conclusions that can be drawn from
the images recorded.
From detection, the cause can be traced to a certain
critical hot spot, e.g. a poor electrical connection, an
incorrectly specified component or has the system
perhaps been overloaded due to an increase in load
without a system upgrade to match it?

The E-ESS approach
If you subcontract thermographic inspection to E-ESS,
you will be assured of the thorough approach you have
come to expect from us. The thermographic images of
your distribution system will be subjected to thorough
analysis . The conclusions and recommendations will
then be submitted in an illustrated and clearly set out
report. It goes without saying that E-ESS is certified in
accordance with ITC-level 1.
Cost savings
Thermographic inspection can achieve substantial direct
and indirect cost savings.
This is because it provides a highly reliable diagnosis of
you system quickly and relatively simply.
In addition, the inspection can be carried out in most
cases without taking your system out of operation.
Many insurers currently require an annual IR inspection
in addition to preventive maintenance.
