about thIs resource
I recommend using this resource with your students in
the first few weeks of school when teaching them about
how people learn.

It will help if you do some background research about the

brain before using this resource, so you can field
questions from students.

Good luck and have a great school year!

Suggested Use:
Have students set up their notebooks. The
brain should be cut out and glued in the middle
of the notebook. Cut out the pop-up
rectangles and glue the tabs as shown in the
example.

Explain that the brain is divided into four lobes.
Each lobe has certain responsibiliGes. Color
and label each of the four lobes and the brain
stem.

Then, record the main funcGons of each lobe.
Brain research is constantly evolving as new
informaGon becomes available. The
informaGon in my example is from the NaGonal
InsGtutes of Health (NIH).

Neurons
Suggested Use:
Have students set up their notebooks. Cut out
the fold-up and glue the pentagon in your
notebook.

Explain how the brain changes when you learn.
I recommend using hand moGons and acGng
this process out. Humans have about 100
billion neurons, or brain cells! Each neuron has
a cell body, the central part of a neuron. The
axon sends electrical signals from the cell
body. Dendrites branch out from a neuron like
a tree and receive signals. A synapse is where
two dierent neurons exchange a signal
between ones axon and the others dendrite.

Label the neuron in the center drawing.
Describe the main funcGon for each of the ve
terms on the side.

DendrItes
Suggested Use:
Have students set up their notebooks. Cut out
the fold-up and glue the tab and top secGon to
the top of the notebook page. Fold along the
doWed lines to make an accordion fold.

Dendrites can grow stronger, thicker, and
longer. You grow dendrites as you learn!
PracGce makes your dendrites stronger.

In the rst box, draw a simple dendrite. In the
second box, draw several more dendrites
growing o the rst one. In the third box,
expand it further by making the dendrites
thicker and adding more. In the fourth box,
expand it even further by adding addiGonal
dendrites.
