Course Description & Objectives:

This is a course designed to continue and reinforce the work that was introduced in Beginning
Spanish I & II (SPN 111 & 112), as well as introduce more complex structures such as past
tenses (preterite & imperfect) and grammatical mood (indicative & subjunctive). Other
grammatical features covered include: constructions with se; adverbs; por vs. para; and formal &
informal commands. Students will also study vocabulary associated with health and body parts,
technology, the home, and nature & the environmen. Finally, students will continue to expand
their knowledge and appreciation of Hispanic cultural.
Student Responsibilities:

1. Purchase a copy of the textbook and bring to every class. (Textbook was used in Spanish 111
& 112). The textbook is NOT OPTIONAL (use of the Supersite is optional). Failure to obtain
required materials will result in significant reductions of the final grade.

2. Attend all scheduled classes, arrive on time, and come prepared. Actively participate in all
class activities.

3. Complete all homework assignments on time BEFORE class; read and do all exercises aloud
whenever possible to practice speaking and pronunciation.

4. Practice listening, understanding, and speaking the spoken language as often as possible with
classmates and others outside of class.

5. Take full and early advantage of the language tutoring program and instructors office hours
for help with any difficulties. Check the tutoring schedule of the Modern Language Workshop
(CO-208) for availability of tutors.

6. Make use of BCCs Language Lab, located in SA-100. Speak to your professor for further
details.

Departmental Attendance Policy:

Bronx Community College attendance policy will be followed, which states:

Class Attendance: Attendance and participation are significant components of the learning
process and play a major role in determining overall student academic achievement. Therefore,
students are expected to attend and participate in all class sessions in which they are registered.
In the event of excessive absences, faculty may lower the grade, request completion of additional
assignments, or assign a failing grade (WU or F).

Lateness: Classes begin promptly at the times indicated in the Schedule of Classes. Arrival in
class after the scheduled starting time constitutes lateness. Latecomers may, at the discretion of
the instructor, incur an absence.

Missed Work: Permission to make up tests or work missed due to student absence is at the
discretion of the instructor.
Evaluation of Student Work: 1

The final grade will take into account: in-class participation/preparedness, homework, a written
composition, chapter tests, an oral exam, and a final examination, as follows:

Participation/Preparedness* 20%
Online Homework 10%
Informative Speech 10%
Chapter Tests (4) 40%
Oral Exam 5%
Final Written Exam 15%

Total 100%

*Participation: in a language course means arriving on time, paying attention to the instructor
and classmates, volunteering frequently, and staying focused on the task at hand when working
in pairs/groups. More importantly, participation means NO CELLULAR PHONE use while class
is in session. A student engaged in their phone is distracted, and is therefore not participating.

Preparedness: students complete the assigned homework/reading PRIOR to arriving to class and
therefore have an idea of what will be covered/practiced that day. Students cultivate effective
and consistent study habits, such as making flashcards, working with tutors, visiting the language
lab, forming study groups, and practicing Spanish in the real world (the Bronx is a perfect place
to use Spanish daily).

Online homework: The online exercises in Aventuras must be completed and submitted
electronically via the VHLCentral portal (http://www.vhlcentral.com.) Please note that your
textbook comes with an access code for the site. Note that all assignments must be completed by
midnight of the day before the class meeting.

Short Informative Speech: Speech of Explanation (Power Point) (6 minutes). Select an original
concept, policy, idea, or person, location or event, that interests you from the country you
selected and inform your audience about it. (How-to speeches are not acceptable.) Prepare a
minimum of two visual aids to accompany your presentation (see guidelines handed by
professor).

Outcomes:

At the end of the course the student will:

Carry on more involved and complex conversations in Spanish.

Read expanded texts in Spanish and engage in conversation/debate on the readings.

1
Any adjustments to these criteria must be documented in writting and provided to the students.
Write coherent standard Spanish demonstrating control and understanding of
grammatical structures and expanded vocabulary learned in this course.
Show a better knowledge of Hispanic cultures.
