The Depth Ray systems provide continuous monitoring of the level of liquids and slurries
in a tank or vessel. The display reading is generated by a probe mounted in the top of the
tank which emits an inverted, cone shaped ray from the antenna end of the probe. The
probe measures the time it takes for an emitted ray to return to itself. The system will read
under pressure or vacuum and is not normally affected by foam or air-born dust particles.
Information from the probe is sent to a digital display via a weather proof shielded cable.
The digital display is mounted in a weather tight fiberglass enclosure. The digital display
enclosure may be mounted in the cab or on the exterior of the vehicle. The display can be
programmed to indicate tank levels from empty to full or from full to empty. The display
may be in Meters, Centimeters, Millimeters,1Feet or inches.

Installation Requirements and Recommendations

Options for mounting arrangements of the Depth Ray Probe include:

o 2 Female Threaded Coupling
o 2 Threaded ANSI Flange Assembly

Consideration of the type of Depth Ray Probe mounting arrangement chosen

should include:
DOT tank or Non-DOT Tank
Material being transported
Ease and frequency of the need to remove the probe from the tank.

It is the responsibility of the installer to provide protection for

the probe from damage from tree branches and low hanging
obstructions during transport.

There are several critical requirements for the installation location of the Depth
Ray probe. Please insure that the installation area chosen meet these
requirements.

The Depth Ray probe should be installed vertically in the highest

point on top of the tank that meets the requirement is Figure 1 Page
9 and Figure 2 Page 10.
Protection for the probe from damage from tree branches and low
hanging obstructions during transport. A guard might be required.
Mount the Depth Ray probe as far away from inlet pipes as
possible. This will reduce the potential of interferences from
turbulences and spray of incoming material which may cause the
Depth Ray reading to be erratic.
The Depth Ray probe emits a cone shaped beam that increased in
diameter by 6 inches for every 18 inches of distance the beam is
projected. Therefore the area below the Depth Ray probe must be
free from obstructions in this area.

Probe Beam Dimension Table

Approximate Ray Diameter
Example: Tank Diameter at the of end of the Beam
18 = 6 In. Diameter
36 = 12 In. Diameter
54 = 18 In. Diameter
72 = 24 In. Diameter
90 = 30 In. diameter

The Depth Ray probe antenna extending into the tank must be a
minimum of 12 measuring from the bottom tip of the probe
antenna. Refer to Figure 2. on page 10.

Choosing Probe Installation Locations

There are several options for installation locations for the Depth Ray Probe in the
tank. For any installation location, it is critical to make sure the chosen location is
free from obstructions in the tank as describe in Table 1. Page 8 and Figure 1
Page 9.

Two options to consider is to install the probe in the center manway or, in the top
front section of the tank. Our first recommendation is to install the Depth Ray
Probe in the cover of a top center 20 manway when possible, as long as there
are no obstructions within the tank as described describe in Table 1. Page 8 and
Figure 1 Page 9..

Installing the Probe in the manway cover offers two advantages. First, with the
probe installed in manway cover which is higher than the tank shell, the
increased height of the Probe raises the dead zone of the Probe where it will stop
providing a liquid level reading. It also provides a simple means to inspect the
Probe with out removing it from the tank. A disadvantage might be the Probe
head could be more exposed to damage from overhead road hazards and will
require additional protection.

Manway Cover Installation:

When installing the Depth Ray Probe in a manway cover, install the Probe
mounting fitting approximately 5 off of center of the manway cover towards the
hinge assembly. The Probe mounting fitting can be a 2 full threaded coupling or
2 threaded ANSI flange. The DR200 Depth Ray probe is supplied with a
threaded reducer for installing the probe in the 2 fitting supplied by the customer.
Make sure the Probe fitting is installed plumb and level. Refer to for the
Maximum Probe Component Mounting Area (Figure 2 on page 10) when
installing the Probe mounting fitting in the manway cover. The Probe head will
be approximately 7 above the top of the manway cover.

Tank Shell Installation:

The Depth Ray Probe may also be mounted directly in the top of the tank shell
The liquid level reading will be reduced by approximately 10 using this method.
Refer to for the Maximum Probe Component Mounting Area (.Figure 2 on page
10) The Probe mounting fitting can be a 2 full threaded coupling or 2 threaded

liquid level in the tank as well.
o Turn the Display Enclosure main power switch to OFF before
transporting.

17
System Maintenance:
The Depth Ray system is nearly maintenance free.

Normal inspection of the Probe, Cables and Enclosure should be performed

every three months or if the Depth Ray System display is erratic.

Probe Inspection:
o If the Probe is installed in the manway cover, open the cover and follow
the instructions below.

o To remove the Probe when installed in a threaded coupling or flange:

Before removing the probe, bleed any tank pressure to zero before
unthreading or removing the Probe

o Disconnect the Probe to Display Cable on the Probe.

o Unthread the Probe by turning the 2 reducer fitting on the probe
from the mounting fitting.
o Lift the Probe out of the tank.
o Clean the Probe Antenna using warm water and mild detergent to
clean the Probe antenna. For safety sake, do not use solvent, or
petroleum products to clean the probe or solvent that will damage
the probe antenna construction material.

Troubleshooting:
Problem: No Display on the Display Enclosure:
o There is a green LED light on the circuit board inside of the
Display Enclosure that will illuminated when the main power
switch is ON. If the green LED light is not illuminated: Open
the cover of the Display Enclosure and check the fuse on the
control circuit board mounted on the rear of the enclosure.

Still No Display on the Display Enclosure:

o Check to insure the cable and harness connections
are attached to the connectors on the Display
Enclosure and the Probe Connectors.
Connect them as needed.
o If the main power switch is ON and the amber power
light is not illuminated:
Check for 12 Volts DC power at the Main
Display Enclosure Cable
Check the supplied 12 Volts at the vehicles
power supply.
Restore power as required.
o Check the Depth Ray white ground wire for a sound
connection.
Repair the ground as required.

Incorrect Reading at the Display:

o Insure there is no interference in the area of the tank
below and around the Probe Antenna beam.
