Artifact Rationale Statement

1. What is this artifact and what did you do to develop it?

This artifact is a PowerPoint on working with step-parent families. To develop this

artifact, I researched the definition of stepfamilies as well as mentioned the
different ways a stepfamily is formed that a teacher would possibility see. I
researched the statistics of stepfamilies in the United States and Tennessee,
explained the impacts and feelings of a child who is part of a stepfamily, and also
gave books for children and adults on stepfamilies. I personally interviewed a
woman and child who just recently became a stepfamily and gained insight and
tips from her personal situation. Lastly, I gave tips for parents and teachers and
provided three resources that could help children, teachers, and parents with the
formation of stepfamilies.

2. How does this artifact demonstrate your growth as a professional and

help you meet the standard?

This artifact demonstrates my growth as a professional because it shows how

important it is for any teacher, including myself, to learn about each childs family
and understanding what is going on beyond the classroom. This artifact shows
that I understand how important it is for me to partner with the families, by
including them and knowing the diverse types of families I will have in the
classroom. This artifact also shows that I can find community and national
resources to provide to the families and also for myself.

3. How will you use what you have learned in the future?

I will use what I have learned by first getting to know each child individually and
learning about their family characteristics. I will designate family events instead of
specific events such as Fathers Breakfast because I understand this may not fit
the childs family. I will be a supporter of every family represented in the
classroom and be knowledgeable about different resources I can refer them to if
needed.
