FREE AND FORCE VORTEX APPARATUS

II. PROCEDURE:
1. Position test set-up on HM150 such that drain and overflow route water into
drainage channel or volumetric tank.
2. Insert Fittings in base plate in line with desired experiment.
Force vortex:
Vane with cover plate and shaft.
3. Position selector ball cock such that marks faces vertically upwards; the two
outlets are closed.
4. Make hose connection between HM150 and unit and open drain of HM150.
5. Close main cock of HM150and switch on pump of HM150.
6. Slowly turn selector ball cock to desired position :
Anti-clockwise tangential inlet (force vortex )
Clockwise radial inlet (free vortex )
7. The water volume can be exactly regulated with the slanted-seat valve in the
outlet.

Determining Radius and Height

1. Insert combined radius and height gauge in mount from underneath and
secure using star-type nut.
-For measurement, loose star-type nut and set new height then use knurled
nut on cross member to move gauges to surface vortex.
-Readings are taken at the following points:
Height: Shoulders of retaining rod; this indicates the height of the gauges
above the bottom
Radius: Left edge of notch of slider this indicates the radius.
Height gauge: Pull combined radius and height gauge downwards out
of mount and insert 10
mm gauge in hole; secure with star-type nut.
Insert 3mm gauges in holes in gland bolts and secure.
For measurement, position gauges on surfaces of
vortex. As all gauges are of
Equal length ,a rule can be used to measure the
distance between the top
edge of the mount and the end of the gauge.
Angular velocity determination by the way of number of revolutions:
1. Determine the time it takes the propeller to perform 10 revolutions with the
vortex.
2. Compute for the angular velocity

1 Revolutions
= 2..n in s with n in seconds
