CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

The mind or the gift of rationalizing, is one of the most complex ability we, humans, are

capable of. Since time immemorial, the progress that man has undertaken intellectually is

undeniably great; from being able to learn to walk upright, to being capable of creating simple

forms of tools that can make their life easier. Such changes are achieved because of their

aptitude to adapt. According to IPCC (2001), Adaptation refers to adjustments in ecological,

social, or economic systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli and their effects

or impacts. It refers to changes in processes, practices, and structures to moderate potential

damages or to benefit from opportunities associated with climate change. Such ability to

conform to such dramatic changes, allow an individual to shift their thoughts and tendency to

demonstrate consequent actions.

There are various reasons why individuals take significant actions; and one of which is

because of Social Change. According to Wilterdink N. (2009), a category by which demographic

impact called Social Change, is one of those potential reasons for adaptations. Social change

in the broadest sense is any change in social relations. Viewed this way, social change is an

ever-present phenomenon in any society. A distinction is sometimes made then between

processes of change within the social structure, which serve in part to maintain the structure,

and processes that modify the structure. The specific meaning of social change depends first on

the social entity considered. In addition, one is forced to take substantial responses to adapt

himself in the ever changing environment of his community for him to justify and continue his

existence.

According to Andersen L.R (2015), change is inevitable, and it is achieved through

various emotions that act like vessels. People also experience transitions requiring

adjustment. This flexibility allows us to maintain forward movement in our lives. Such transitions

can also be referred to as pain. Pain is capable of changing an individual, well in fact it is indeed

is the sole reason of change. This urge of strong emotion can actually be drawn from various

ways either physically, emotionally and socially. According to a recent study conducted medical

practioners (2013), it was found out that personality traits appear to influence how strongly a

person responds to a treatment for pain. Personality traits associated with self-control and the

regulation of anger in particular were associated with greater pain relief. Personality traits are

also known to influence a persons response to treatments for certain conditions. Pain in

accordance to such instance like abuses, is one of the main matter,

According to Merriam-Webster Inc. (2014) , Abuse is the improper usage or treatment of

an entity, often to unfairly or improperly gain benefit. It also harms or injures another person.

Abuse can come in many forms, such as: physical or verbal maltreatment, injury, assault,

violation, rape, unjust practices; crimes, or other types of aggression.

The specific meaning of social change depends first on the social entity considered; and

one of such social entity that the researchers decided to conduct their study to is to child abuse.

The World Health Organization (WHO) define child abuse can be a single incident, but

usually takes place over time (Richardson, 2004). As explained by the women participants in a

study by Van Loon and Kralik (2005a): While definitions of abuse remain ambiguous, some

behaviours are objectively deleterious to healthy child development. All the same acceptability

around behaviour varies widely from one social group to another (Tucci, Saunders, & Goddard,

2002) and from culture to culture.

In the Philippines, UNICEFs work is based on upholding childrens rights, including the

right to protection from abuse. In the 1990s, the Philippines adopted a law protecting children

from abuse, exploitation and discrimination. However, children remain at risk of sexual and

physical abuse, trafficking and child pornography. According to the United Nations International

Childrens Fund (UNICEF), As many as 2,147 cases of child abuse were reported to the

Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the first quarter of this year, more

than onefourth of which was of a sexual nature. The figure was nearly half of the total 4,374

child abuse cases reported in the entire year of 2015, according to the Policy Development and

Planning Bureau of the DSWD -there are more children becoming victims of abuse, violence

and exploitation. In addition, the country lacks a national child protection monitoring and

reporting system determine the exact number of children in need of special protection, such as

victims of abuse, violence and exploitation.

Being a student, for example of Bachelor of Science in Social Work, the researchers are

to obtain information regarding such matters. They also found the topic significant as potential

future public servants, and useful for prominent references by external parties. The researchers,

being considerate, want to uncover the present state of child treatment in their vicinity which in

their case is Barangay Karuhatan. Because of such reason, researchers have selected to

evaluate the cases of child abuses in Caruhatan National Highschool.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

Intellectual matters regarding pain in various ways are only a minority of any significant

effects of abuse. Any personality adaptations for this corresponding pain, is what probably be

the way they could communicate to the rest of the members of the community.

Taking account their experiences or any relatable instances incorporated to abuse, an

individual experiencing such odds makes an impact on how they behave outside the society.

The researchers are about to take accountable actions to treat any irregular personality

thoughts to prevent any further emotional damage.

They are to prove that one is always capable of making a decision in his every steps.

This rational gift is what makes them unique and so justify their existence in the society.

Researchers used Existentialism to show the relationship between decisions that run

inside a highschool student; of whether they experience any kind of abuse. This verdict shall

dictate the possibility of ones actions if the former occurs.

According to Allen (1900), Existentialism is a philosophical movement which emphasizes

on individual existence, freedom, and choice. There are several philosophical positions all

related to existential philosophy but the main identifiable common proposition, is that existence

precedes essence. By this, existentialism states that man exists and in that existence man

defines himself and the world in his own subjectivity, and wanders between choice, freedom,

and existential angst.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

This research-paper aims to discover Highest Number of Cases of Child Abuse in Caruhatan

National High School by collecting data from the following questions:

1. What kind of abuses do these students experience from their environment?

2. What action do these students usually do after they were abused?
3. How the authorities addressed this kind of cases in Brgy. Karuhatan?

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study will scope the relevant issue and cases of child abuse in Valenzuela City

specifically in Barangay Caruhatan. This study will be done in Caruhatan National High School

with the participation of the students as our respondents in our survey form which will help to

gather information to support our study.

The limitations and possible weaknesses of this study is the innocence of some children

from the different kinds of abuse. In addition, the lack of courage to seek help from the

authorities such as womens desk, police and barangay officials may be the weakness of this

study. However, these issues may be resolve by having a plan before dealing with it.

Furthermore, it lessen the ability to measure the real count of abuse cases in larger amount

because it focuses only on percentage.
