CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

CONTEXT
Polytechnic education was introduced in Malaysia with funding from the
World Bank and in collaboration with the Colombo Plan in 1969. In its
environments to meet the growing demand for skilled human capital
today, the Ministry of Higher Education is constantly upgrading the
country's polytechnic system and has plans to transform polytechnic
education to be more attractive to students. Currently, there are 33
polytechnics in the country which can be divided into three categories -
premier, conversional and metro. These polytechnics provide skilled semi-
professionals in the fields of engineering, commerce and hospitality at
diploma and advanced diploma levels to meet the demand of the public
and private sectors.

Polytechnic of Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah (PTSB) was formerly known as

Polytechnic of Kulim, is the 16th polytechnic under the Ministry of Higher
Education, Malaysia. Polytechnic of Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah (PTSB) is the
second polytechnic established in Kedah after Polytechnic of Sultan Abdul
Halim Muadzam Shah at Jitra. Polytechnic of Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah is
located at Kulim Hi-Tech Park, 09000 Kulim, Kedah. Mechanical Engineering
Department (MED) is one of the major departments at the Politeknik
Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah, Kulim Kedah. MED is headed by Mr Alias Bin
Umar, operates with the support of 59 lecturers who are trained,
experienced and have expertise in their respective fields and assisted by
three non-academic support staffs. Program offered in PTSB, MED is
Diploma In Mechanical Engineering (DKM), Diploma In Mechanical
Engineering (Manufacturing) (DTP), Diploma In Mechatronics Engineering
(DEM).

Admission to Polytechnics is a student must be Malaysian citizen and 18

years old and above. Next, the applicant must passed the Sijil Pelajaran
Malaysia or equivalent with at least FIVE (5) subjects including Bahasa
Melayu and passed in the subjects of history (SPM 2013 and above) in the
SPM examination. Obtained at least a credit (Grade C) in Mathematics or
Additional Mathematics and get at least pass (Grade E) in the subjects of
English and candidates are not colour blind and disabled members of the
practical assignments.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Workers are not taking the proper precautionary measures before working,
or they are simply too lazy to be bothered with it. Students ignore safety
precautions in the workshop and do not know clearly how to use the
machines and equipment in the workshop. Because a lot of unfortunate
incidents involving negligence in workshop
Problems at PTSB, MED, Workshop. In 2009, a student has broken a finger
when operating the lathe machine in workshop. Furthermore, a male
student exposed to welding sparks caused by not wearing welding masks.

Therefore, we felt there is a need to do a research about this issue to open

the eyes of students, lecturers and management on the importance of
safety in the workshop

AIM
The aim of this study is to ensure student have better safety in workshop.

OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this study are:
a) To investigate if students feel safe when they study at workshops
b) To find out if the machines and equipment are safe to use
SIGNIFICANCE
On student side, safety is more assured if they follow all the rules in the
workshop. Next, lecturers teaching in the workshop will go easier and
more effective without any problems. After that, the management does
not have to worry about the safety of students. It also provides invaluable
information for the management which enables them to improve the
safety at MED workshops.

CHAPTER 2: METHODOLOGY

Sub topics
2.1 Research Design
This research employs a quantitative research design where
questionnaires are used to collect data and the result is presented using
graphs and charts.

2.2 Samples
The number of student population in the Department of Mechanical
Engineering session in December 2016 is 812 students. In the survey, we
selected students from semester 1 to semester 6 to help us answer the
questionnaire. We chose them because students are required to work in
mechanical workshops each semester. So, they need to know and take
note of the safety in the workshop. Number of samples of our survey is for
50 students of mechanical engineering. Sample method we use is simple
random sampling method.

2.3 Instrument
In this research, we used questionnaires to collect the data about an issue
that we take as our research. The questionnaires is divided by two parts.
Part A and Part B. Content in questionnaire in Part A is about a
demography background information of respondents such as semester,
gender, age and programme. In Part B, we used to collect data to find out
answers to meet the objectives of the research and we had list 10
question to be answered by respondents.

2.4 Data Analysis

We have collect data from questionnaires to analyse. Then we had
transform the questionnaires into statistics. The questionnaires presented
by using tables and charts.

2.5 Limitations
Result may not represent the MED students from all semester at PTSB and
all mechanical students at all polytechnic in Malaysia. Results depends on
the ability of the respondents to recall their experience in workshops.

CHAPTER 3: RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The pie chart shows the opinion of students about the emergency
lane usually blocked in MED workshop. Overall it can be seen that
the number of students who unsure is more than those who
disagree. The number of students who strongly disagree is 20%
and 12% students strongly agree while 2% students are agree
about this statement.
The pie chart shows the opinion of students about the safety
regulations of the equipment are displayed at MED workshop.
Overall it can be seen that the number of students who agree is
more than those who strongly agree. The number of students who
unsure is 20% and disagree and strongly disagree dont have any
vote about this statement.

The pie chart shows the opinion of student about the condition of floor at
MED. Overall, it
can be seen that the number of students who disagree is more than those
who agree. The
percentage of students who strongly disagree is 30% while 32% students
disagree with the
statement. Strongly agree scored the lowest while agree was the the
second lowest.

The pie chart shows the opinion of student about the condition of machine
at MED. Overall,
it can be seen that the number of students who agree is more than those
who disagree. The
percentage of students who strongly agree is 40% while 44% students
sagree with the
statement. Strongly disagree scored the lowest while unsure was the the
second lowest

CHAPTER 4: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

By analysis the results which we have gained from questioning among

MED student at PTSB we have come to conclusion about safety at MED
workshop. Overall, it can be seen that the safety of equipment and tools
are the most agreed among students. Unfortunately, based on our
questionnaire we found that students feel unsafe when they work in
mechanical workshop.
Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that:
So, we recommend that students should always have a positive
safety attitude.
Furthermore, we must always wear a proper PPE (Personal
