Counseling Program Mission Statement The member of the St. Angela School Counseling Department believe that a model school counseling program should: enlighten, enrich and empower students, nuture emotional development, equip students wit hthe tools needed to achieve their goals, forster a safe and supportive environment for all, prepare students to be lifelong learners and advocates, recognize students abilities and maximize their potentials, collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents and the community to further student success. ‘Schoo! Counseling Program Goals The school counseling program will focus on the following achievement, attendance andior behavior goals this year. Details of activities promoting these goals are found in the curriculum, small-group and closing-the-gap action plans. Ger mukcaeteuated ‘Academic: According to our needs assessment only 9/15 students mentioned liking reading as one of their favorite subjects. Our goal is that our students will learn to enjoy reading. So, we propose a curriculum that involves students reading about topics they enjoy/relate to (sports, about African American boys, etc). 2 |Career: According to our needs assessment, 24/25 students would like a sports related career (be in the NBA, football, etc). We believe that a curriculum on career exploration and how to tie in sports into other career options (sports journalism, sports psychology, sports medicine, etc) would be beneficial. Our goal is to open their minds to new possibilities. 3 |Social/Emotional: According to our needs assessment, 9/15 students responded that they | either do not feel safe at school or only sometimes feels safe. We propose a curriculum on general safety, while also tying in some bullying pieces.
