Outline:
The broad objective of this course is to make individuals who are launching their research
careersunderstandthephilosophyofresearchandintroducethemtovarioustoolsthatcan
help improve their research and problem solving skills. This course can be broadly divided
into five modules. The first module of the course would introduce young scientists and
engineers to the notion of research, various tools for thinking with creativity and innovation
which are critical for undertaking research. Second module of this course would make the
individuals familiar with technical reading and writing. Third module of this course will touch
upontheideaofpresentingdatainameaningfulandcomprehensiveform.Itwillalsointroduce
the concept of Design of Experiments so as to optimize the number of real experiments.
Fourthmoduledealswithstatisticalanalysisofdata.Thismodulewillbringforththeconcepts
of mean, standard deviation, precision, accuracy and their implication to experimental data.
Fifth module of this short course will enable researchers to process the data obtained from
variousexperimentssothatitcanbeanalysedandinterpretedinacogentmannerinorderto
draw logical inferences. It will introduce the concepts of regression, curve fitting and error
estimation, linear and nonlinear models, hypothesis testing. The course will conclude with a
short module on Ethics in Research, scientific method, types of misconduct in academic
settings,etc.
