Introduction: (2min)
Introduce myself and set the expectations, regarding behaviour.
Modelling model visualising to the class prior to their reading groups.
Teacher - What is visualising? Find out who knows what visualising is in relation to reading a text. (This question is a lead into
the body of the lesson).

Body:
(5 mins)
(Whole Class)
Teacher Use reading card On Board the First Fleet. Visualising is when the reader uses their prior knowledge and
experiences to create a mental image of what is happening in the text. Visualising is also sometimes called sensory imaging,
creating images, pictures in the mind or the movie in your head. It may be helpful for some students to close their eyes and
imagine what is being read.
Teacher See who has read these cards before. Advise not to give it away to other students. Look at the front and back of the
card, the pictures, titles and have the students visualise what they think the story is about.
Teacher Visualising supports comprehension as students create their own mental images of what they are reading. They feel
more connected to the story, enjoy the story and more and understand it more deeply.
Students - close their eyes and imagine what it was like being on one of the ships of the First Fleet. The living conditions, the
sea, storms, food, toileting, sleeping, smell, noises, tastes. The students can use their five senses to imagine what it was like
being on the ship.
Teacher Will read the card to the students who still have their eyes closed.
Teacher Once they have finished reading, the students will open their eyes.
Teacher Advise students that this will assist with the History Task A, and we will speak about that in History.
Teacher This is what we will be focusing on in this weeks reading groups.

Conclusion:
Recap the lesson visualising is when students create their own mental images of what they are reading. They feel more
connected to the story, enjoy the story and more and understand it more deeply.
Visualising will assist in their History and English tasks.
