SCOPE
1. This Defence Standard (DEF STAN) in conjunction with the documents referred to herein,
specifies the general design requirement for strainers, capable of removing particulate matter
in the range 50 m to 6 mm, fitted in the fluid systems of HM Surface Ships and Submarines.

FOREWORD
Sponsorship
1. This Defence Standard (DEF STAN) is sponsored by the Warship Support Agency (WSA),
Ministry of Defence (MOD).
2. Any user of this Standard either within MOD or in industry may propose an amendment to
it. Proposals for amendments that are not directly applicable to a particular contract shall be
made to the publishing authority identified on Page 1, and those directly applicable to a
particular contract shall be dealt with using existing departmental procedures.
3. If it is found to be unsuitable for any particular requirement, MOD shall be informed in writing
of the circumstances.
4. No alteration shall be made to this Standard except by the issue of an authorized amendment.
5. Unless otherwise stated, reference in this Standard to approval, approved, authorized and
similar terms means by the MOD in writing.
6. Any significant amendments that may be made to this Standard at a later date will be indicated
by a vertical sideline. Deletions will be indicated by 000 appearing at the end of the line

Conditions of Release
General
9. This Standard has been devised solely for the use of the MOD, and its contractors in the
execution of contracts for the MOD. To the extent permitted by law, the MOD hereby excludes
all liability whatsoever and howsoever arising (including but without limitation, liability
resulting from negligence) for any loss or damage however caused when the Standard is used
for any other purpose.
10. This document is Crown Copyright and the information herein may be subject to Crown or

a. Requirements for any oils or greases to be used for any purpose shall, wherever
possible, be selected from those listed in DEF STAN 015 Fuels, Lubricants and
Associated Products. If this is not possible it shall be brought to the attention of
the Prime Contractors Office (PCO) and/or the Warship Support
Agency/Marine Propulsion Systems IPT, WSA/MPS216, as applicable.
b. If lifting gear is required to move components, it shall be used only on the lifting
points provided.
3.4.2 Location
a. Strainers for use in HM Surface Ships shall be shock rated to Naval Shock
Standard (NSS)1, in accordance with BR 3021(1). They shall also conform to
the requirements of BR 3021(2), BR 8470, BR 8471, BR 8472 and BR 8473 as
applicable.
b. The Noise, Shock and Vibration requirements for Strainers for use in
Submarines will be specified in the SRD.
a. Each Strainer shall be hydrostatically tested, using clean water as the test
medium, to 1.5 times maximum WP, which shall be maintained for a minimum
of 5 minutes during which time no leaks shall be allowed.
a. On completion of testing, each Strainer shall be drained, cleaned and dried. All
machined faces shall be adequately protected from mechanical damage and
branch openings shall be sealed to prevent the ingress of dirt or foreign matter.

4. DESIGN REQUIREMENTS/GUIDANCE
4.1 General
a. Except where stated in the SRD Single Element Strainer Bodies shall be formed
from a single casting with integral inlet and outlet branches. Double Element
Strainers may be assembled from multiple castings in order to incorporate flow
control components.
c. Branch bores shall be circular on a common axis and the diameters shall be in
accordance with the nominal size of the Strainer. For information relating to
Strainer sizes previously used refer to Clause 5.5e and Table 5.1.
d. Where inlet and outlet connections are flanged, the flanges shall be at right
angles to the axis of the branch and concentric with the bore. Flanges shall be
drilled in accordance with the requirements of the SRD.
e. Where inlet and outlet connections are to be welded, the weld preparation shall
be specified in the SRD.
f. Where inlet and outlet connections are threaded, the threadform shall be
specified in the SRD.
g. Where practicable, Strainer bodies shall be provided with machined drain and
vent bosses to dimensions appropriate to the filter body size. Vent and drain
plugs shall be provided which shall be manufactured from materials which are
compatible with the Strainer body material.
h. Quick release covers are preferred. Where these are provided, removal and
fitting should not require the use of tools. Strainer cover joint faces shall be
machined.
i. With the exception of clearance holes for fastenings, all covers shall be fitted
with full area gaskets or toroidal seals as appropriate.
k. Where shock mounting pads are specified, they shall be cast as an integral part
of the Strainer body.
l. An arrow shall be cast on the Strainer body to indicate direction of flow. Where
alternative methods of indicating flow are proposed they shall be referred to
WSA/MPS216 for approval.
m. The freeflow area characteristic of the Strainer (based on the ratio of open area
through the Strainer basket to area of inlet branch) shall be not less than the
value stated in the SRD. See also Clause 5.5b.

4.2 Materials
b. Overall Material Design shall embody advances in design concept and new
developments in technology, which may lead to innovative and alternative
proposals or solutions.
c. Any proposal to use materials not previously employed for similar duty shall be
submitted to WSA/MPS216 for approval.
5.1 General
a. The two fundamental types of pipeline Strainers in current use and previously
used are the Basket Type and the Y-Type. Additionally, a straight-through
flow variant of the Basket Strainer would be specified for use within sea water
systems.
b. Because this type of Strainer would be fitted where cleaning often occurs, the
basket(s) would be made to be removed and replaced as simply as possible. A
yoke type cover would be suitable for smaller sizes where the Strainer cover
would be held down by a clamping yoke sturdy enough to hold full line pressure,
which could be quickly loosened or tightened by hand. In larger Strainers it
would be more appropriate to secure the cover at multiple points e.g. by using
swing bolts and butterflynuts.
c. Basket Strainers would be installed upright and the basket lifted out from the
top. This imposes system design constraints requiring that the Strainer be
installed in a horizontal line with an adequate space envelope for basket
removal/replacement.

a. Size for size, Ytype Strainers offer less dirt holding capacity and a larger
pressure drop than basket Strainers.
b. The open area ratio of a Strainer describes the amount of free open area of the
Strainer and Basket. It is the ratio of the open area through a clean Strainer
Basket to the cross sectional area of the pipeline. A basket Strainer should have
an open ratio of at least 4 : 1; anything less may cause an excessive pressure
drop.
d. There are no industrywide standards for face to face dimensions for flanged
Strainers. Therefore, the Strainer from one manufacturer may not physically
fit into pipework designed for a different brand of Strainer.
e. Table 5.1 indicates Strainers by type and size that have been codified and used
previously. The table is not exhaustive and additional information relating to
previous applications is available from WSA/MPS216.
f. Table 5.2 lists materials previously found suitable for Strainers. The table is
not exhaustive and materials specified to equivalent or superior national or
international standards may be appropriate.
