Project Summary
Anchored Reaction Block Slope Stabilization
American Freightways Trucking Facility
Montgomery, New York
onstruction of a trucking facility

C required cutting into a ridge of

glacial drift. A 300,000 gallon
water storage tank was located at the top
of the slope. Ground conditions consisted
of a silty glacial till that was dense in situ
but lost appreciable strength with slight
increases in moisture content attributed
to precipitation, as well as groundwater.

Calculations by the geotechnical engineer

indicated that a permanent earth retention
system would be necessary to stabilize the
250-foot long, 50-foot high, cut slope.

Design Solution
Initially, an anchored sheet pile wall was
designed to permanently stabilize the slope. Hayward
Baker was asked for a Value Engineering alternative to the
costly wall. Hayward Bakers economical design utilized
43 anchored reaction blocks at 3 elevations.

Installation
A temporary access bench was initially cut to provide
access for installation of the upper row of anchors.
Hayward Baker then began anchor installation by drilling
a full-length cased hole at each anchor location. High-
strength threadbars were then inserted into each cased hole
and the bond zone was pressure grouted using 4,000 psi

strength grout. Reaction blocks were next cast-in-place

around the anchor heads. After the blocks cured, bearing
plates were installed and the anchors were tensioned
against the reaction blocks. This process was then
repeated for the second row and subsequently, the third
row of anchors. Anchors were 60 to 101 feet long with
design loads of 180 to 350 kips.

QA/QC
Grout quality, quantity and pressure were monitored
during installation to ensure consistency. Being perma-
nent anchors, the high strength threadbars received dou-
ble corrosion protection consisting of epoxy coating,
grout encapsulation, and grease-filled caps. All anchors
were installed and proof tested to 133 percent of design
load in accordance with PTI standards.

Conclusion
The anchored reaction block wall provided permanent
stabilization of the cut slope at a substantial cost savings
over the sheet pile wall option.
