Surprise.Daphneisa1/6scaleresinkitproducedbyMarcHavicanandsculptedbyMike
Petryszak.Thekitconsistsofelevenpressurecastparts,moldedandcastbyMichaelAllen.
Pleasenotethattheprocessofbuildingandpaintingthismodelkitrequiresacertainlevel
ofmodelingskill.DoNOTletchildrenorteenagedmodelersworkonthiskitwithoutadult
supervision.

Daphnehasbeenanexplorersincechildhood.Whilemostofherschoolmateswereplaying
withBarbiesandteasets,sheandhertwobestfriendsBrookeandChristaroamedthe
nearbywoodsinsearchofadventure,oftenreturninghomeafterdarkwitharucksackfull
ofbugsandcritters.

AftergraduatingfromChelseaBonestellHighSchool,Daphne,Brooke,andChristaenrolled
inRoddenberryUniversity,wheretheyeachearnedPh.DsinAppliedPhysicsandAerospace
Engineering. All three joined the Intergalactic Space Patrol and set off to explore the
universe.

Daphnes Surprise captures a scene from the girls first expedition to an alien world.
Daphneevertheintrepidexplorercouldnotwaittoclamberdownfromthethreefinned
rocket and set out on a new adventure. Shortly after leaving her gleaming cylindrical
chariot,sheencountersherfirstalienlifeform,atentacledcritternamedOrb.

ThisguidetobuildingDaphneismerelythataguide.PleasefeelfreetointerpretDaphne
asyouseefitcolors,modifications,dioramas,etc.Theseinstructionsarenotmeantto
bethedefinitiveguidetobuildingandpaintingthekit,butarejustacollectionofphotos,
suggestions,andtipsandtricks.Idlovetoseewhatyoudowithhersohavefun,andsend

Thefirstthingtodoistoremoveanyremainingmoldreleasefromthekit.Thereleaseon
Daphneisminimalandcanprobablyberemovedwithdishwashingdetergent.Removeany
flashandmoldseamsusingsandpaper,sandingpads,orthebackofahobbyknife.Prime
thepartsusingyourfavoriteprimerandcheckforanyremainingmoldlinesorscratches.

Istartedwiththebase.IwantedasortofMartianfeel,butwithabitmorevariationinthe
soil.Ibasecoatedwitharedoxidecolor,followedbywashesofvariouscolors,including
chestnutinks,mixesofumbersandgrays,andvarioushighlights.Justplaywithituntil
yourehappywiththelook,thensealeverythingwithDulcoteorKrylonMatte.Ithen
drybrushedthehighlightsusingshadesofyellow,orange,andgreen.

Aftersealingagain,ImaskedoffthebasesothatIcouldpaintOrb.Youcouldhandpaint
himandsavethemasking,butIliketoairbrushandlovethelookwhenIpeelawaythe
masking.TomaskOrb,cutthinstripsoftapeinsmallsectionsandcarefullyapplyaround
thebase.IuseTamiyatape.

NextIflattenedSillyPuttyandtoreoffseveralchunkstooverlapthetapeandprotectthe
unevensurfaceofthebase.

Aftercoveringtheremainingareaswithbluepainterstape,IbasedOrbinalightgreen
color.Youcoulddothisinpurples,reds,grays,whateverinterpretationyouwant.Letyour
imaginationrunwildafterall,heISanaliencritter!

BesuretopaintOrbsupperbodyandtentaclesatthesametime.Thatwayyoullbesureto
matchupallofthecolors.Asyoucanseefromthisphoto,Iusedaslightlydarkergreento
paintstripesaroundthecircumferenceofhistorso.Ididthesamearoundthesmall
tentaclesandacrossthemaintentacleonthebase.

Afteryouarehappywiththebasecoats,sealwithDulcotetoprotectyourworksofar.

ThenextstepistomixaglazetobringoutthedetailinOrbsbody.IuseGoldenAcrylic
GlazingMediummixedabout5050withGoldenHookersGreenHueairbrushreadypaint.
IchoseaglazeforthisapplicationbecauseIwantedadarkerlookinthecracksandcrevices.

Youcanuseanykindofglazeorwashyouwant,mixitwithwater,Windex,differentratios,
etc.Usewhatyourecomfortablewithremember,thereismorethanonewaytoskinan
alien!

Liberallyapplyyourwashorglazeandletitsitforafewminutesbeforegentlywipingitof
theraisedsurfacesusingasoftcloth.

HereyoucanseehowtheglazesettledintothecracksbeforeIwipeditoff.

Afterremovingthemasking,IpaintedOrbsspotsinpurple,followedbyalighterpurple
drybrushing.


HereIvetestfitDaphnesrightbootontothebase.Iusedsquarebrasstubingassupport
rodsbetweenherfeetandthebase.Youcanfinditatmosthobbyshopsortrainstores.

Iusedwatercolorstoaddalightpinkridgearoundtheinnerlidofhiseye.Theeyeballis
glosscoatedwithTamiyacleargloss.


Aftercarefullyremovinganyseamsandmoldlines,IscribedthelinesalongDaphnesgloves
withascribingtool.Youcouldalsousethebackofanumber11hobbyblade,butpleasebe
careful!

Withthebasecompleted,IpinnedDaphnesarmsandlegs,usingbrassrod.Afterliningup
herarminthecorrectposition,Iusedafinelinemarkertomarkalignmentpoints.

Tofilltheslightgapsbetweenherarmsandtorso,IrolledouttwothinwormsofAves
ApoxieSculpt,putthemaroundthecircumferenceofherupperarms,andgentlypressed
thepartstogether.Iletthepartssitforaboutahalfhour,thengentlyremovedmostofthe
excessputtyusingAvesSafetySolvent.Ididthesameforthejointswhereherbootsjoin
herlegs,thenseteverythingasidetocurefor24hours.

Aftertheputtycures,sandtheseamsuntiltheyaresmooth.HereweseeDaphne
completelyassembledafteralloftheseamshavebeenfilledandsanded.


Andheresheisafterafinalprimercoat.Iwantedthefinalbasetobewhitesothatthe
colorswouldreallypop.

Okay,letspaint!Workingfromdarktolight,Ishadedherfacewithadarktanfleshcolor.

Thenaddedthemidtonesandhighlightsbylighteningthedarkcoat.

Addhighlightstothetopsofhercheeks,chin,andeyebrows.Dothesameforherarms,and
ifyouchoosetohaveherwithbarelegsinsteadofleggingsherthighs,knees,etc.

AftersealingwithDulcote,Iusedpastelstofurthershadeherskintones.IuseFaberCastell
pastelsbecausetheshadeandblendreallywell,andtheydontchangecolorwhensealed.

Grindsomepowderoffthestickwithsandpaper,thengentlydabthepastelswhereyou
wantthem.Wipeyourlipsandswallowyourspit,thenblowtheexcesspasteloffthepart.
Thelastthingyouwanttodoisexpelmoistureontothepowder!

Usingasoftbrush(IuseMicroMarksexcellentdrybrushes)gentlyblendthepastelintothe
surroundskintones,featheringawayfromthedarkestareasintothelightest.

NothingbeatsgoodreferencematerialIuseVictoriasSecretcatalogs,butyoucoulduse
Cosmooranymagazinethathasgoodclearshots.

Aftersealingthepastelwork,maskoffherarmsandpaintherspacesuit.

HereIvebasecoatedDaphnewithabrightyelloworangefromGoldensexcellentlineof
airbrushreadypaints.Idarkenedthebasecoatwithorangeandthenshadedtheareasthat
neededit.


Iwantedasemimetallicpearlescentsheentohersuit,soImixedupsomethinnedgold
metalliccraftpaintwithBadgerextenderabout7030extendertopaint,thenaddedavery
smallamountofPearlExpigmenttothemix.

Daphneseyeswerebasecoatedwithanoystercolormadefromamixtureofunbleached
titaniumandatinydropofPaynesGray.Iusedwatercolorstocreateathinwashofpink
andapplieditinathinlinejustinsideherlowereyelid,thenbrushedherlashesandpupils
withMarsBlack.Herlipswerebrushedwithvariousshadesofpinkandcoral,thenoutlined
withred.

IwantedDaphnetohaveblueeyes.Placeacoupleofwhitehighlightsaroundtheedgeor
heririses.Iusedasharpenedtoothpickforthis.
