Comma

I. Content and Standards:


CC.1.4.3. F Demonstrate a grade appropriate command of the conventions of standard
English grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.

II. Prerequisites:
Students should be able to construct and use punctuation marks in written language
form.

III. Instructional Objective:


Students will be able to visually identify a comma and its purpose when it used in
written language form.
Students will be able to correctly use a comma in written language form.

IV. Instructional Procedures:


Before: (5 minutes)
Teacher will introduce the comma and its purpose in written language by using
a Teacher created PowerPoint.
Teacher will recite The Comma poem to students To separate, to pause, to
wait, to add a bit of drama, theres nothing that can do these things, more deftly
than a comma.
Teacher will be using the I do, we do, you do teaching strategy
During: (20 minutes)
Teacher will use the PowerPoint to explain the rules of how and when to use the
comma by using written examples for each rule as part of the I do.
Students will be introduced to the strategy of using an acrostic poem to help them
remember the comma rules.
Students will be given a copy of an acrostic poem using the word comma to be
pasted into their interactive notebook.
As part of the we do, students will be randomly called to the whiteboard to
place commas in the appropriate place in sentences.
Once completed, students will use their whiteboards to participate in The Great
Comma Drama that is on the PowerPoint presentation.
After: (60 minutes)
Students will then transition into four ten minute centers for independent practice
as part of the they do teaching strategy.
Students will engage in the following learning experiences that allows for the
practice of using commas.

Once rotations have been completed, twelve students will transition to the
computer center and complete the Study Island assessment on the comma.
The students who are not in the computer center will complete pages 43-44 in
English workbook.
Students will then switch until all students complete the Study Island assessment.

VII. Accommodations and Modifications:


No students with IEPs
ESL students (2) may work with a partner in centers.
Both students are able to read English.
For writing center, the two students will be given a pre-written script of the writing
prompt.
