Abstract
This paper demonstrates the social medias impact on modern students
performance of higher academics. Moreover, it also explains whether social
media helps them in group tasks and academic activities or not. The main
purpose behind the writing of this paper is determination of impact of social
media in general on students. To determine whether social media is an
absolute necessity or a mere time distraction for students has been the
course of many researchers and that aim is focused here. The social media
has been claimed to have bridged the gap of communication among
students by providing effective ways of learning. The nature of research done
was both qualitative and quantitative in nature. It also answered how social
media serves as an important element in studies. The social media enables
students to handle complex problems and tasks. This has also been
explained here. It also explains how social media has been able to remove
educational barriers among students and how they were given confident in
solo studies. Based on qualitative interviews, the role of social media was
explained in their daily lives. As a conclusion, different propositions were
proposed regarding interviews stunning results. The research paper has been
given finishing touch by solution to all problems generally faced by students
during social medias usage.

Introduction
It is claimed without any doubt that modern technology has turned the entire
world into a Global Village. Every picture has two parts. Technology is no
different. Technology exposes mankind to do things in much refined and
better way. It shapes the ways in which tasks are accomplished.

In the light of view of Paul (2010, p.301), internet has been given very
interesting definition. Paul describes internet as network of networks. He
claims the internet to be networking infrastructure, connecting millions of
computers together globally, forming such a bond that maintains when both
computers are in domain. It can be a LAN (local area network) which
connects computers in an area or WAN (wide area network) connecting other
LANs together. Connecting private, commercial, government and academic
as well as other aspects of social networks, it is truly a networks of networks.

The browsing of an article for receiving information about an event can never
be substitute of watching it online. Being the spectator of the events is truly
priceless. The service of late methods of media can never be denied dude to
their vitality in daily life. Not only does the virtue of social media let a viewer
enjoy the social medias live telecast, even the old way huggers can relive
their old habit of reading newspaper of any sort from internet. The rapid
adjustment of this and multiple daily life virtues can be made possible by
social media and internet. The term is vastly defined by users along with its
merits and demerits. While many definitions can suffice, it can roughly be
called as a network extending its branches to other networks rightfully as
network of networks, thus removing the barriers that existed in
communication.

The students form the building block of a nation. Any nation having brilliant
student genre can alter the course of history. The fresh blood with virtue and
high potential has power to alter a nations history. The study behaviors of
students have without any doubt evolved to interesting points. Chief among
them is how quickly and rapidly the thinking of students has changed. The
factors which have significantly altered the students modes of study include
many new technologies. The most potent among them in manner of
influence is social media. The effect of social media when unveiled properly
has been known to cause drastic changes among students. The old tedious
ways which once existed as barriers in path of studies have now been
replaced with more comfortable ones. In many cases, the students do not
require teachers to answer their queries which are raised during self-study.
The internet provides much better and refined solution along with facility of
repeating the solution again and again, should the student miss one point. A
gift indeed in way of education! A recent survey showed that more than 80
percent of students utilize social media as medium for variety of things
(Blankenship 2010). The social media is thus a tool to be used by modern
generation in dealing with daily life problems and its effectiveness has been
verified by many sources. The Blankenship survey also revealed that more
than half of 80 percent of social media utilizers use it as medium of
education.

Until now many surveys have been conducted to analyze the behavior of
students in academics case. Different aspects of modern life have been
taken into studies. The social media is chief among them. The major problem
has been to consider whether social media is a useful tool to be utilized in
way of education or it should be discarded for academic purposes on basis of
its demerits. According to Christine, (Christine 2010), the social media has
been tested and verified many times just for cause of its general impact on
students efficiency in academics. The results have been mostly inconclusive.
The reason is that where social media approached with its negative strands
causing hurdles in ways of education, it was unveiled that the hurdles
existed even before the advent of social media and were solely the product
of careless behavior. The social media had served as medium to amplify
them. Social media also approached with such outstanding merits that even
the critics are certain of its usage. The least it did was to amplify the
creativity and searching skills of students. It contributed in technological
innovation, paving the way for more technological advancement and
development. The ease of learning content with such flexible methods
provided students the independent behavior for their advancement. Besides
that, the social media created the virtue of self responsibility in students,
making them search for answers to their curiosities by themselves instead of
seeking aid to teachers. The self -advancement of students when compared
to old and orthodox ways has been impressive. This proved that social media
is an asset to the modern generation. Another hurdle that social media
removed was communication barrier which was hurdle for many. The social
media refined the communication. The potential obstacle of confidence of
student for asking question was well replaced by self- search on internet.
Every picture of social aspect comes with two sides however. Despite of all
contribution that social media has done for sake of students, lifting them
from orthodox level to new generation, it has also caused many other
problems which if not handled can lead to severe dysfunction of students in
academics.

The social media offers a wide variety of subjects. The picture might not be
as white as it seems when usage of social media is viewed among students.
Being network of networks, social media contains boundary-less flow of
information about everything no matter how grim or ominous it might be. It
amplified the hurdles which once existed among students. The chief among
them is time procrastination. The time procrastination is thief of time, leaving
students to study at 11th hour, thus not giving their best to studies. The
procrastination situation has been exacerbated due to what that media
provides as advertisements and adds to any website even if its educational.
When a site is opened for academic purpose, the attention is most likely to
be diverted to facebook, leading to heavy loss of time. As mentioned before,
the social media is medium for many things whether they be good or
wastage. The social media also excels in providing information about things
which shouldnt be discussed so open. The ease of usage of internet so
openly, provides the students the wasting habit of procrastinating during
lectures in class. This causes potential information to be sacrificed just for
sake of temporary entertainment. The research work will focus on general
impact of social media and the solutions to problems which are giving
negative reputation to it.

Literature Review
Social media is about sharing of information and data by means of internet.
Besides that it also includes social interaction and chatting using the services
of internet. The service of internet can take various shapes. However the
most part of it is in form of social media which constitutes wide variety of
programs designed specifically for this purpose. The social media has been
claimed to have bridged the gap of communication and has overcome the
barriers of communication. By providing new ways of effective and creative
learning, it has potentially removed the barriers which once prevented the
growth of students before. Thus social media by virtue of its fast new
methods removed the uncertainties.

(Jan H.Kietzmann, 2011)Authors have defined new functional blocks for the
social media which define what social media is and how it is used. Basically
functional blocks represent the characteristics of certain program or software
they are defined with. The functional blocks of social media define the
various ways in which people become accustomed to the usage of social
media to meet their social and personal as well as educational requirements.

Identity Block:
Identity block defines the personal data of a person that he/she has stored
on different platforms falling under category of social media. The identity
block is involved with a persons identity that has been defined by that
person on platform used widely by user. The social media arrived with many
blocks depending upon how people view its usage. Here many people share
their personal data and keep a good profile of their personality on facebook
or other platforms. Besides this, many potential teachers and students keep
their own profiles such as drop box available for usage for many other
students or teachers. This is also an excellent approach of record keeping.

Conversation Block:
The conversation block is one of most profound blocks. Some of most expert
opinions call it one of main blocks defined in terms of social media. The
conversation block includes many elements of social media to acquire
meaning full conversation. The block is about how people communicate with
each other. The old days were filled with orthodox methods which made it
nearly impossible for anyone to contact anyone living beyond specific
boundary. With this dilemma, came also hurdles in students academic
performance. By not being able to contact the friends for specific goals such
as assignments, major hurdles are imposed in way of education as well as
isolation working seems only goal to this dilemma. The group activities which
require immense indulgence of others also get affected by absence of other
members. The group activities and other seemingly impossible tasks are
made possible by social medias virtue. The conversation block includes all
those elements which make chats of students to students ton better and
easier.

Despite of all the good things, according to above mentioned author, the
social medias conversational block also creates hurdles in way of academic
performance. Many activities of students which planned together can be
accomplished. However there is other side of picture. The conversational
block allows extreme ease of conversation. The students can chat anytime
which leads to immense procrastinating. The best example of conversation
block is skype and facebook.

Sharing Block
The sharing block deals with many things. Chiefly and mainly it is a set of all
those things which allow teachers and students to upload and save data
which may be important material in case of students or even teachers. The
sharing block has many elements. All perform the wondrous task of saving
and sharing data with others. Among all these we notice that many are
multifunctional serving many purposes. The facebook widely used by millions
of users falls in this category. By virtue of facebook, many users can easily
upload files and lectures which are mainly power point slides. The mentioned
way has been a most successful way to remove majority of barriers which
imposed numerous problems in acquiring the good quality material. Besides
this, the acquiring of books has been even made better as the students can
acquire and study from books in soft form rather than hard form. This
reduces the entire major pages burden to a negligible chip form.

Since every picture has a dark side. This block helps in sharing pictures as
well as many important files. The facility is however exploited to share non
desirable data. Though, mainly the sharing block has been utilized for
academic purposes.
Presence Block
The presence block is one of blocks which indicate the users presence on
social media. The main soft wares falling under this category is facebook.
The facebook provides opportunity to see the presence of users using the
facebook. The other one is skype which also tells if any of other users is
online.

Reputation Block
The reputation block is one of blocks which are least used for academic
purpose but it is used as well. The reputation block involves other people as
well as datas reputation on internet. The reputation block can be held
responsible for telling whether the major data available on internet is
reputed well for usage or not. The reputation blocks elements are also used
though on least scale for checking the validity and ratification of online
teachers in any academic background.

Group Block
The group block is another major element which shows the online
communities and sub communities. The block is both potentially useful as
well as has potential harms. The group block has all those major elements
assisting in group making activities.

The past times were quite hard for students regarding educational group
activities. The group activities were limited by frame of time and place. The
current facilities of technology and development have changed that. The
group block elements have allowed formation of groups. The group activities
involve accomplishments of many potential tasks and projects and
assignments.

As modern technology has commenced modern practices, successfully

replacing old orthodox ways with more comfortable and approachable ones,
no one can deny the importance of social media. Social media is cause of
improving collaborative learning among students and increases their
interactivity. The only hurdle one encounters while utilizing social media as
cause for education is time management and avoiding procrastination.
(Waleed Mugahed Al-Rahmi, 2013), according to mentioned author, the social media facilitates
the process of learning. The social medias importance has mostly been approved by top notch
scientists, who in their lifetimes tried to solve dilemma of whether social media is call for
improvement of education or it is just another modern hurdle imposing difficulties in ways of
students ethics and education. According to modern strategists, not only students, but teachers of
greater standards utilize social media for their personal growth as well as educational schemes
which have been so far extremely successful. The social media is thus not only a developing tool
for students of variety of age especially of college level, but also to teachers. It has been used by
many teachers for uploading their data and files to be used by students. An author (Mike Moran
Chief Strategist Converseon Jeff Seaman, 2011), claims that social media allows for most faculty
member to serve as a tool to post contents for students to read and learn. The author and
strategist further explains that social media is also used in creating websites for teachers which
teacher can utilize for his/her own advantage and store data for usage by students as well as can
also increase reputation and growth using same advantage. Another author explains that social
media incites creative learning procedure in students. The author focuses on how crucial creative
learning is and how social media is achieving all this. The author (Boyd, 2008), says that social
media is tool of creative learning and development for students. (Namsu Park, 2009), the recent
mentioned author says that social media is call for students to organize themselves and search for
information on internet. Besides educational purposes, the students can utilize social media for
self-seeking, increasing their status and increasing their entertainment activities.

(Brian L. Wilcox, 2004), the author regards influence of social medias advertisements on
students behavioral patterns and how the simple advertisements and relevant stuff is affecting
students in different ways. The author focuses on fact that social media sparks good quality
marketing in students. By social media, the students are inclined towards buying by seeing the
different advertisements and relevant websites affect their behavior in regarding manner.

(Matthew James Kushin, 2010), according to mentioned author, the social media incites political
behavior in students. The social media is call to even average stay at home student to explore the
politics of this world which is a remarkable feature of students, helping them grow in all
dimensions and setting. The social media by regular used soft-wares encourages daily users to
identify different current affairs going through the world which keeps students in touch with
politics and keeps them well grown in this sphere of life.

Being a student of higher education, one has to deal with complex problems
affecting the daily routine of every individual. Social media comes to aid
when it comes to solving dilemma. The social media focuses on creative
learning and developing the calculation skills of students when it comes to
learning. By keeping the things private and secure, the user can exploit this
setting to attain more knowledge. The ease and freedom of its availability
has also compelled everyone to recognize social media as one of necessary
tools in this world. Most students today use social media and most find it
easy while some find it quite difficult to manage tasks due to attraction of
much irrelevant stuff on social media. (Margaret-Anne Storey).

Methodology
In order to conduct proper research, we took the effort of managing semi
structured interviews among students. The effort was successful and at some
places the interviews had to be dropped due to lack of facilities. Being
subjected to constant impact of social media, the students had various
responses. Some were expected and some were unexpected. The five
universities were visited during the procedure and a proper set of questions
was prepared for each of student interviewed. The set of questions
represented the general model of problems encountered by each of
students. The questions are given below

1. Do you think social media helps you in academic activities?

2. Do you think social media helps you in group academic activities?
3. Do you think social media helps you in general group activities?
4. Do you think social media helps you in social tasks?
5. Generally how much time do you spend on social media daily?
6. How much time is wasted as procrastination during social media
usage?
7. If procrastination is done, can you still manage time brilliantly?
8. If procrastination is still a major problem, have you tried looking for a
solution?
9. Do you think usage of social media for academic tasks has enabled you
for complex tasks?
10. Do you think social media has enabled better mind storming?
11.Do you think social media has improved the link between teachers and
students?
12.Do you think social media has made you self dependent comparing the
matter of your studies?
13. Do you think social media is platform of information? How?
14. Do you think social media is platform of influence? How?
15. Is it serving well as influence or information platform?
16. Do you feel comfortable to study on internet?
17. Is social media a hurdle in your academic career or it has removed hurdles? Elaborate
these hurdles.
18. How can you remove/overcome these hurdles?
19. Parents check and balance?

Analysis
According to studies of great researchers, social media serves not only through single site; it
can serve through many multiple sites for students to satisfy their educational needs. All of
the students are well aware that social media is used for information and influence. The
definition of social media differs from person to person. The most profound saturation found
in answers was that social media is a network of connecting people and it connects people
through use of its networking elements. It provides information and everyone whether it be a
student or 80 year old granny, has a profound use of it. The answers to above mentioned
questions revealed many important factors about social media including that social media is
all purpose platform rather than serving as simple influence or information platform. The
barriers which are have linguistic and gender nature have also been well shattered by social
media. These barriers once created immense hurdles in academic purposes.

Social media for instant solution and academics

The beauty of social media is that it molds itself according to users choice of usage. It can
serve as an all-purpose platform. Using social media, students can share data and convey
information unlike before. The availability of books in soft form has reduced the biggest
hurdle of information. Link between students and teachers has been improved to such extent
that teachers can share online information through different elements and students can get
that information free of cost.

Time Management Using Social Media

The main conundrum we found during interviews while students praising the social medias
free and upper hand, was that time procrastination had multiplied compared to before. The
time management had presented itself as main dilemma during questioning. However a very
interesting thing found was that social medias time procrastination depended on its usage by
students point of view.

Conclusion
The social media is one of the modern technologies that have significant part
in lives of students of higher institutes. Activities to daily routine have been
altered greatly by advent
of this technological revolution. Whether adapting to this technology is
crucial or had done more harms than benefits is research topic of many
researchers. The purpose defined of this research is to label it as generally
good or bad.

Our research led us to diverse and interesting results. While few opinions
were saturated, some varied person to person. We followed unstructured
questionnaires that led us to extensive research. Many students were asked
about many aspects of social media on their academic and social careers.
The interviews were conducted in several universities. The opinions of
students varied from department to department.

1 . Interrogating the biosciences department, we received varying results.

Our main points revolved around significance of social media on social and
academic career. About general definition of social media, it varied from
person to person. The saturated answer that nearly 90 percent gave was
that it is a network connecting many things including information and social
sites. The social media was rendered as all-purpose platform. The remaining
10 percent gave varying according to their own opinions. The 90% said it
was a part of their everyday life and they depend on it for their assignments,
projects and semesters.

When asked about social skills, the results were diverse. About 60
percentage of total agreed on point that social skills are enhanced by usage
of social media. The remaining 20 percent held the belief that social skills
improved to some extent. The other 20% believed that social media had
negative impact on social skills due to language and virtual chat instead of
face to face interaction. They were more concerned about the fact that you
never know who you're interacting with socially and that can lead to many
problems. When asked about mind storming, the results again varied
surprisingly. The mind storming behavior in opinion of 60% was increased.
They believed that social media has given the mind more creative ideas and
more issues to think about. The 10% thought that social media had negative
impact making us narrow minded as people believe anything on the internet
without thinking about it logically. While the rest 20% held that mind
storming had been unaffected. Link between teachers and students had
been improved. This opinion was found in 80 percent. The 10% claimed no
effect of social media on this matter. Remaining 10% thought it had slight
improvement. The direct contact with teachers was more appreciated. When
asked teachers about it they did not support the 80%.They believed that
students and teachers should interact physically rather than through a
screen.

As academic career questions continued, the diversity was again found. The
time procrastination had been issue and had been increased. Almost every
student wastes more time on Facebook, Twitter etc. while making projects
than they would have if the project could be made offline. Almost 100%
agreed on this. The 70% preferred soft form e books while remaining
preferred hard form documents. According to 80%, the self dependent
behavior had been enhanced by social media and that it is important for self
confidence. The 20% agreed that contact with teachers was better approach.
In this matter, their opinion was that self dependent behavior was
unaffected. The normal usage found in majority was 1-2 hours. The 30%
extended this to 4 hours because of their procrastination. It was claimed
platform of information by 40%. 10 % thought it to be platform of both
equally. The social media was claimed platform of influence by 50%. Parents
check and balance was severed according to all of students.

While the perks and defects continued together, the solution given by most
of students was self-control. Some found server restriction to be more
appropriate. Deeming the overall percentage, the social media has been
found to create hurdles but benefits as well. It is a necessity as equal as it is
harmful. By staying focused on the fact that the Internet is a means to an
end, plan your strategywhether youre looking for information or
entertainmentwith the end in mind and youll save valuable time and
energy.

2. The students of humanity gave different approaches as well. Defining the

social media, the saturated opinion found was that social media is defined by
user and its usage. The social media can be equally a system of information
as much as it can be a system of entertainment. It is a productive system
molding itself according to users choice of usage.

Proceeding with questions about social career, the first question was whether
it affects social skills or not. While 60% held opinion that the social skills
were feature of user and are unaffected, the 20% held that social skills were
enhanced by advent of social media. Shy people with low confidence gain a
lot of courage by socializing; People fin d friends with the same interest. The
remaining agreed on belief that social skills were enhanced to a limit. Asking
about mind storming, the 70% believed that social media has enabled
students to have habit of effective multitasking. The 30% believed that mind
storming was again the feature of users and it was affected to some extent
in a positive way. Asking the link between teachers and students, the 60%
held the belief that the link was severed. Teachers should have a habit of
announcing in class and not via technology, because sometimes the internet
is not available, or the phone's out of battery and this way its unfair to some
students who don't have the means. The 40% had opinion that it depended
entirely on teachers and students. Generally the teachers hold negative
opinion of adding students. Same notion is found in students as well. The link
thus is not affected overall by social media.

While asking the questions regarding academic careers, student formed

opinion based on interests. Time procrastination had been an issue. While
90% agreed on this notion, the 10% held the belief that it was users choice
of self control. Asking about nature of study material, 60% believed that hard
form material was more help than social media. While many important things
can be found on social media, the information related book can be more
help. 40% shared the thought that e books and soft form of material was
preferred on basis of easy availability. Asking about self dependent behavior,
the social media had little to no effect on this aspect of studies according to
70%. Self dependency is feature of user and it was affected to some extent
in opinion of 30%. The usage as found among most of 80% was 2-3 hrs with
about half time for studies. The usage found among 20% extended to 5-6
hours with sixty percent of this time being invested in studies. The social
media is platform of information as equal as it is a platform of influence. The
90% shared this idea as it was entirely on user whether it was used for
entertainment or influence. The parents check and balance was unaffected
by social media in opinion of 60%. The rest thought it had been severed by
advent of social media. The check and balance depended on what condition
it had from start. Social media was a technology that had same impact as
any other technology would have on check and balance. The 80% agreed
that there were hurdles created as well as removed on equal basis by social
media. The 20% thought it had created more hurdles.

The overall conclusion is that social medias harms and benefits are
determined by user. All humanities students held the opinion that self-
determination and self-control was the key to solution of problems social
media had been thought to create

Solution:

The user determines what impact social media can have on it. Otherwise like
many modern useful tools, social media is on top of list and its something
that can't be ignored or avoided. However addiction can be avoided by
seeking out friends and acquaintances that couldnt care less about the
Internet. Take time to appreciate the fact that all life is not yet online.

The overall conclusion is that social medias harms and benefits are
determined by user. All students held the opinion that self-determination and
self-control was the key to solution of problems social media had been
thought to create. The user determines what impact social media can have
on it. As we researched on different aspects of academic and social careers,
while some held the belief of social media being heavily involved in their
routine change, the significant amount believed that it is feature of user
whether to turn this to a burden or to use it effectively to make life easier. It
is what we make it The invention of social media has changed our lives
tremendously. With instant messaging, unlimited access, being a cheaper
method of communication, raising awareness, and generating income by
promoting goods and services, social media has revolutionized modern day
society. However, by developing addictions, changing the definition of
privacy, creating scams and spreading antisocial messages, social media can
prove to be harmful to mankind. Thus, social media can be either a blessing
or a curse to the world. Thus social media usage depends entirely on user.
Though some problems reveal themselves to be created by its advents like
enhanced time procrastination, the entire percentage of benefits are literally
what user makes it. Thus social media is necessity in case of modern studies
and has assisted nonetheless in studies. The ones who agreed that social
media had created more hurdles also held this belief. Thus social media is a
tool to be used in assisting academic career. The usage of this tool do
depend on the user but we can also not deny the fact that the popularity of
the social networking sites have increased rapidly in the last decade. This is
probably due to the reason that college and university students as well as
teens use it extensively to get global access. These social networking sites
such as Twitter and Facebook have become a raging craze for everyone
nowadays. The negative effects of these social networking sites overweigh
the positive ones. These sites have caused some potential harm to society.
The students become victims of social networks more often than anyone
else. This is because of the reason that when they are studying or searching
their course material online, they get attracted to these sites to kill the
boredom in their study time, diverting their attention from their work. Many
parents dislike social networking. They believe that sites such as Myspace
and Facebook attract child predators. Others believe that cyber-bullying
takes place on these sites. Still others feel that social networks distract a
child from his or her school work. Will a child not be distracted in the
playground? Are there no predators on the streets? These do not seem to be
good reasons to ban social networking for everyone. It's best to talk with
your child about the dangers of online social networking.
