WOC Assignment / 2017

DUE: Submit electronically by 5 pm Friday 3rd
(then, bring to class on Tuesday, February 7th)

1. Based on your experience, what are key characteristics of a good educational event
for adults? The key characteristics for a good educational event is something that
is hands on, gives real life examples, and is something that is applicable to the
group that the event is targeting to, which in this case would be adults. I also
believe that there needs to be some sort of entertainment to grab the attention of
the adult and something they can use to go through with the idea that was
learned.
2. Was the Monday night service a good educational experience? Why? The
international fair was an amazing learning experience for me. Using food, dance,
and materials from countries it grabbed my attention and gave me the
opportunity to speak to the booth workers and learn more about their
experience as missionaries. Also, gave me the advice if the missionaries and the
steps I should take towards to plan for the future.
3. Which of the mission booths were the most appealing/enjoyable? Why?
My favorite booth was the Oman area. The guy running it gave us a hand on
experience with tea made in the, or close to the, traditional way it is made in the
Middle East. He also explained a little about the culture. My next favorite booth
was the Mexico booth. I loved talking to the Greenfields and hearing there
passion and heart for Mexico and the people in it. They were both enjoyable
because of the food, decorations, and the attitude of the people.
4. Which of the mission booths were the least appealing/enjoyable? Why?
The booth I liked the least was the World Outreach Booth. The man running the
booth continued to ask me questions even after I told him I needed to leave. He
also had flashing lights on his booth which were tacky and not the most eye
pleasing. He partially criticized short term mission trips and vacations using the
statement, Its Gods money youre spending. In my belief, he had weird
viewpoints but I hope other students enjoyed him!
5. Which of the Tuesday prayer day activities/services was your favorite? Why? I went
to the SMF and Justice Campaign prayer tent and I loved both of them. The
SMF tent was my favorite. I loved the idea they had of the writing your prayers
for the people and countries and praying over them. Enjoyed it a lot.
6. Which of the prayer day activities/services was your least favorite? Why?
I least favorite service was the chapel with communion. I loved the sermon but I
felt like the communion was staged and not the most genuine. I loved the concept
of taking communion with fellow peers but did not enjoy the way it was
delivered.

MORE INFORMATION TO RESPOND TO. (I refers to you the student)

Now that I have had an opportunity to evaluate an event as an adult learning

event, here are some of the things I think are important in facilitating adult
learning:
1. Grab their attention with hands on or visual things
2. Speak about something that is applicable and related to the real
world
3. Give them an opportunity for input and questions

I think that facilitating adult learning is different from facilitating the learning of
children in the following ways:
When teaching for adult you have to be open to discussion and willing
to let them put input. When teaching kids you tell them to do
something and give them a consequence if not done. When
facilitating adults you have to give them the option of doing
something and still have a consequence but its up to them whether
they want to do it or not.

I think that some concepts apply to both the facilitation of adult and childhood
learning, such as..
Grabbing the attention and making it enjoyable for both kids and
adults. Giving them time to learn and space to improve their learning.
Also, being there and able to assist if they need help.

Evaluating this event has raised some questions in my mind concerning adult
education:
What is the hardest thing I will face when teaching adults and how can I
integrate my beliefs in with my teaching?
