In Act 3 of The Tempest, Shakespeare uses irony and a theme of love and desire to

create romance and tragedy to further show the effects of love in a particular situation. The irony
of Miranda and Ferdinands love for each other being forbidden by Prospero shows how love
can actually create motivation in people who are banned from someone or something. Also the
fact of Ferdinand doing manual labor while he comes from royalty shows his desire to be with
Miranda. We also have the love of Alonso towards his son, and how Alonso is willing to give up
everything to just be a father and be with his son. Alonsos love for his thought to be dead son
makes him realize that he no longer needs to be a king but rather a father.

Act 3, Scene 1 focuses mainly on the connection between Ferdinand and Miranda.
Ferdinand is royalty but in Scene I Act III he isnt very royal-like instead he is doing labor and it
doesnt seem to bother him. On the other hand, Miranda was raised in an island and is quite
obedient with her father and does as he pleases. Even though these two characters come from
different backgrounds the romantic nature of this particular scene is shown by their love for one
another through the way they are communicating. In their conversation Ferdinand says I do
beseech you, chiefly that I might set it in my prayers, what is your name which conveys that
Ferdinand has some interest towards Miranda. Both of these characters seem to set aside their
priorities for the love towards one another. Ferdinands shift on his character is when he says
The very instant that I saw you did, My heart fly to your service which conveys that even
though he is royal for her he is willing to leave that all aside for her. In addition, just like
Ferdinand, Miranda says Miranda.o my father, I have broke your heart to say so!, which
demonstrates that love was bigger that her since she is always doing as she is told until now.
The Ironic perspective of this scene with Miranda and Ferdinand is that what was once
important to them they were willing to let it all go for someone they basically just met which
conveys that they are both settling for something small when Prosperos plan could create
something bigger and both of them would be the ones ruling Naples. Therefore in this scene the
characters actions demonstrated that love can conquer all barriers set in ones way, such as
Ferdinands work for Prospero and Prosperos non acceptance of the love between Miranda and
Ferdinand.

In Act 3, Scene 3, Shakespeare uses Alonso and his compassion to introduce tragedy
into the play. The ironic aspect of Alonso, the king, is the fact of him transforming into a selfless
person who now feels guilty of his past. As a result of Ariels curse, Alonso begins to realize that
his past was filled with evil and now he only wants to be with his son. Alonso will seek his son
deeper than eer plummet sounded and when he finds him he will lie there with him mudded.
Alonso is conveying that he will search restlessly until he finds his son, and when he finds him
he will kill himself to be, physically and spiritually, with his son. Looking at Alonsos reaction we
see a morally good person through his guilt, but we also see the reactions of two morally bad
people. Antonio and Sebastian choose to try and fight their legions oer. Therefore in this
scene Shakespeare relates the actions of the characters to how it applies in society, showing
how some people may result in violence and some people may realize their wrongdoings when
introduced to the problems of their past.
Shakespeare conveys the effects of love on the characters of The Tempest and how love
can create romance and tragedy depending on a given situation. All of these characters love
something very deeply, but only Miranda and Ferdinand have a positive result from their love
due to their motivation to be together. On the other hand, we can see how love can destroy
somebody emotionally, because they do not realize the actions of their past until something has
been taken from them. Alonso never realized how much his past effected others until his son
was dead. Love can create desire in a person to have what they want, but depending on their
situation it can be motivation for joyful or for sorrowful reasons. However society plays a big role
to the fact that since Alonso desire power over the people he did what he did and now he
regrets it for love while in Miranda and Ferdinand's perspective they are capable of conquering
their love since there isnt much that could stop them.
