1) Is this a function? Yes.


How do you know? Every input has one output & the graph passes the
vertical line test.

Yes, this is a function.

First I examined the table given. For something to be considered a function


it cannot have two y-values assigned to the same x-value. The data listed on
the table suggested that every input has exactly one output, implying that
this data table represents a function.

I then chose to graph the table of values on a coordinate plane. This


revealed a linear pattern. To confirm that it was a function I used the
vertical line test. Since no two points on the graph have the same x-value it
passed the vertical line test and confirmed my notion that this data table
represents a function.

2) If so, is it linear or exponential? Yes.

How do you know? There is a constant pattern of change.

This data table represents a linear function. I was able to recognize that
these data points were linear by first observing a constant pattern of
change in the table. I re-wrote the table to include x and y-values that were
initially excluded. This allowed the linear pattern to be more prevalent. The
x-values increased by 5 units while the y-values increased by 1 unit.

I then observed the linear pattern that was created as I graphed each of
the values in the data set on the coordinate plane. Since each value fell in a
straight line I could conclude that the graph of these data points was linear.

Lastly, I knew that this was a linear pattern based on the equation that I
created to represent the table and the graph. I knew this because the
highest exponent on each of the variables of my equation was one.

3) What would be the 105th term? 20 units

The 105th term can be determined using a table, graph, or equation.

To use the table I simply continued to increase each of my x-values by 5 and


my y-values by 1 until I reached an x-value of 105. At this point I looked at
the corresponding y-value and concluded that the 105th x-value would have y-
value of 20. Thus, the 105th term could be written as the coordinate pair
(105, 20).

To use the graph I found the 105 value on the x-axis and then observed the
corresponding value of y at that point on the graph. This also revealed a
solution of (105, 20).

Perhaps the most efficient approach to this question is to use the equation that I

developed to represent this data set ( y= x1) . By plugging in a value of 105

for x and then computing the appropriate operations I found that the y-value would
be 20. This was consistent with my previous results of (105, 20).

4) Write the equation for the function. y= x1

To identify the value of y when x was 0 I worked backwards using the table.
I subtracted 5 from each x value and I also subtracted 1 from each y-value
to obtain the ordered pair that preceded it. In doing this I found that when
x is 0 y is -1. This helped me to identify my starting value for my function;
also known as the y-intercept.

This value can also be obtained by looking at my graph and recognizing that the y-
intercept occurs when x has a value of 0 and y has a value of -1.

Once I had found the y-intercept I then proceeded to find the slope of the
data set. I did this by calculating how the y-values were changing in relation
