Debate Speech- Second Speaker :JARVIS BROOKS

Motion- This would implement a gender quota in politics

Our society today has long past the days where womens

rights were animal rights and now has realized that womens right

are human rights. The law being presented by the government

that would put a gender quota on persons entering politics is a

very redundant, unfounded and undemocratic one. Though it can

be argued that despite significant advances in education and

political participation, women still remain seemingly

underrepresented in leadership positions, that occurrence cannot

and will not be solved by implementing a gender quota. Reasons

for this include, that politicians should not be given opportunities

to serve based on gender, but this must always be given based on

merit and / or qualification. Also we must recognize that this law

fundamentally goes against the principle of equal opportunities

for all, since one group is given preference.

What are we as a country if we allow undeserving pawns to

selected for representational politics? Politics is not meant for the

people who are power hungry or money hungry but meant for
those who want to serve; those who spend time perfecting the art

and truly are deserving of that political position based on the

deeds. Implementing a gender quota will simply amplify the

already seemingly corrupted political system by forcing a certain

amount of people into the political game who could just be

underserving. For example political science remains a majority-

male discipline in most countries across the world with 75% of

persons perusing this degree being male and just a staggering

25% being female according to the American National Science

Foundation in 2010 research. This data clearly, tells us that

women are not as interested in pursuing professional career in

politics as men are. So is it that we are simply going ignore this

very important fact and be politically correct and say that women

DESERVE their place over hard working men who spent thousands

of dollars in pursing their professional degrees in politics, versus

some women who arent even qualified or devoted to the career,

NO SIR! . I again say, this opposition, cannot, and will not

ever support the foolish law of implementing a gender quota in

politics for the reason that politicians should be promoted to office

based on the qualification or merit and not based on some

forceful quota.

I want to state upfront, unequivocally and without doubt: I do not

believe that any racial, ethnic or gender group has an advantage

in sound judging. I do believe that every person has an equal

opportunity to be a good and wise judge,

Equal rights, equal opportunity for all, this is the policy for most if

not all civil rights activists, feminists, liberals and fair minded

citizens. Its a classic case of contradiction for those for any

proponent of this basic policy to advocate for the implementation

of a gender quota. If it is that we are going to show preference

when allowing a certain group of people to enter representational

politics, it simply means that we are throwing away that

fundamental policy which has guided generations and

generations to push for a fairer and a more just society. For

example, is it fear that more men be allowed to practice study

nursing at a nursing school just because there are more women

studying it. No! Its not fair. Everyone should be given the same

chance, the same free and open opportunity to pursue whatever

they want not matter their gender, age, color or creed. We must
not go back to the days where for example men were chosen over

women simply because they were preferred and likewise women

chosen over men. So it for this reason why the opposition cannot

support the motion being brought for forward.

Womens participation in politics has come a long way. We

must find other ways by which we can get women more

interested in the profession. Implementing gender quotas, yes will

do this, but a t what cost. The cost is that persons unqualified

persons will be allowed to enter this very essential profession;

persons who might not truly care and might not have the strength

to carry on , to carry on for the people who voted them into

promotion to government.
