What is Radiation?
Radiation : The emission or transmission of energy as waves or particles through
space or medium

The word comes from Waves radiating - Traveling outwards in all directions

Types :

Electromagnetic Radiation
Particle Radiation
Acoustic Radiation
This is the symbol for radiation that is
Gravitational Radiation unsafe for unprotected humans.
Radiation exists everywhere in
nature.
Harmful Effects on Humans
Harmful Effects on humans
Death
Radiation sickness
Such as loss of white blood cells, nausea, vomiting, and headache
Cancer
It varies
R.E.M (roentgen equivalent in man) Is how you measure the amount of radiation is in your
body
1-50 R.E.M. Okay, but some of your blood in your body have minor changes
50-300 R.E.M. Radiation Sickness
300-450 Cancer or even death
450-1000+ Usually death
Blood clots are lossed
Environmental effects
There are many forms of radiation in the
natural environment, and radiation created
due to modern technology.
Natural radiation is often beneficial to plant
growth. (non-ionizing). ionized radiation that
occurs from nuclear material may result in
weakening of seeds and frequent mutations.
Effects from radiation on marine life can be
dangerous, it could greatly reduce
reproduction.
How Radiation Has Helped Us
Human Health

Variety of materials and procedures use radiation.

One of the most popular forms is X-rays (Radiation passes through the body)
Radiation Therapy is used to destroy cancer cells

Industrial uses

Food, medical instruments, and others are exposed to

some radiation to kill germs

Nuclear plants use radiation to make electricity

Metal quality check
And much more
Physics behind
Radiation is used toradiation
manufacture space materials
Intensity of Radiation
Satellite structure
Change the optical and electrical properties (for

Some material) with Gamma radiation

Quantum mechanics Emissivity

(effectiveness in emitting energy as thermal radiation)
Electromagnetic radiation is consisted of photons
Radiation Waves
History
Discovery of x-rays in 1895. Used for radiation therapy.

It showed the exposure to radiation caused burns.

Nielsen finsen discovered that radiation could give therapeutic effects.

Wilhelm Rontgen discovered x-rays.
