Winter at Valley Forge
By Shelby Wolff

George Washington lead his army into Valley Forge as the 1777 winter approached. Valley

Forge is located near the Schuylkill River. This camp had good defense positions and kept the

army close to the British. The army had engineers who helped create huts and military defenses.

The camp was low on food and clothes which led to a tough winter. Soldiers ate meals such as

firecake a mixture of flour and water. A former Prussian general, Baron Friedrich Wilhelm

Von Steuben, strengthened and matured the army. The British finally left Philadelphia to move

back up to New York. Washington moved his army out of Valley Forge after the British left.
John Hancock Signs the

Declaration of Independence
By Sage Miller

I had the chance to meet the charming John Hancock yesterday afternoon, and got to see

his thought on signing the declaration. John Hancock stated that he is proud to be apart of the

American Revolution and that is why he signed his name big and beautiful. He is not going to

cower, so he thought he might as well sign his name so everyone can see that he will fight for

freedom. He also appreciated that he was the first person to sign. He believed he made a change,

and he did.

Here Come the Hessians
By Faith Ackley

The Hessians are German soldiers from Hesse-Cassel which is Europe's most militarized

state. We have come to conclusion that these men are very skilled fighters. There are 30,000

troops in the colonies, hired by the British, to help fight in the war. So far the Hessians have

participated in every battle. However, many Hessians have chosen to stay in the colonies and

are sympathetic to the colonists.

The Bifocal
By Shelby Wolff

Benjamin Franklin invented the bifocal, a pair of spectacles with two lenses in each eye
frame. He was inspired to do this because he is nearsighted and farsighted. Franklin was forced
to keep switching spectacles on and off. After a while Franklin became annoyed with this and
cut all of his lenses in half. He placed half of a nearsighted lense and half of a farsighted lense in
the same eye frame. He did the same to the other eye lense and the new bifocal was created.

The Discovery of the Rosetta Stone

By Sage Miller
In 1799, during one of Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, a French soldier discovered a black
basalt slab near the town of Rosetta. The slab contained three scripts: Greek, Egyptian
hieroglyphics, and Egyptian demotic. The different scripts that were written on this stone
unraveled a whole new world that scientists had not yet discovered. The ancient Greek told
archeologists that priests had inscribed it, honoring the king of Egypt, Ptolemy V. It also told
that the 3 scripts were identical in meaning. Lastly, this artifact solved the riddle of hieroglyphs,
the language that had been dead for about 2,000 years.
Womens Involvement

So far the womens involvement in the war has been minor. Woman are typically boycotting

goods and have been making bullets for the soldiers. They are also trying to involve coffee in our

Last month there was a battle between the colonists and the British. Charles Cornwallis

surrendered and gave his sword to his second in command to give to General George
