Environmental Science

Course Description
Environmental Science is a field study course which will require students to
perform water quality tests; develop an understanding of ecological relationships
between organisms and their environment; recognize land formation and
development using Michigan as a case study; analyze man's impact on the local
and global environment; and identify local flora and fauna.

Ethics and Environmental Impact of Humans Unit Abstract


This unit will introduce students to the ethical issues environmental scientists face
as well as those issues faced by people in the general population. This unit will be
discussion driven and more demanding of the students own insight. Students will
examine current legislation and roles of agencies who work with environmental
scientists. Students will also be expected to observe firsthand some of the
environmental effects humans currently have.

Unit Focus Questions


1 What are some actions that have been taken in the past that have had an effect
on the environment? How do they relate to actions we should take/ are taking now?
2 How should we balance the human demand of natural resources with protecting
the environment? Should we even bother?
3 What have you seen personally that demonstrates the impact humans have had
on the environment?
4 What would be some good legislation to pass for the sake of our environment?
Is it fair?

Content Expectations
1) Read and interpret current environmental policy (HS-ESS3-4)
2) Explain how availability of natural resources has influenced environmental
policies (HS-ESS3-1)

3) Draft a proposal for an policy to protect some aspect of our local environment
using available evidence. (HS-ESS3-2)

2 Presentation about environmental policy.

3 - Take the position of a lobbyist for a company who wants to reduce


environmental legislation to make it easier for them to do business. Partner with
other lobbyists from your firm and then present the policy to a mock senate (the
classroom). Students in the class must ask questions as a senate committee would.
