A Shepherd's View
It's the Second Week of Lent
and already we're ready to
give up on our Disciplines.
We are weak-hearted and
timid and fearful folk and of-
tentimes we're ready to give
up. Today's Gospel brings us courage, blessing,
encouragement, and a moment of prayer, and
experience of the glory of the Lord, of revelation
for all us faint-hearted folk. It is for us when we
act like Peter, wanting it easy, wanting to stay
with the glory, wanting to stay with our limited
and oftentimes off-base
assumptions about what is going on. It's a time
for God to interrupt and once again tell us: "This
is my beloved on whom my favor rests-the favor
of grace, spirit, justice, care for the poor,
obedience. LISTEN to him and NOT to anyone
else!" (A Hint- this is in contrast to the tempter's
voice last week) In today's Transfiguration of Je-
sus, his mission and identity is affirmed; he will
continue to Jerusalem and to his Death and
Resurrection. Let our response surely be---We
will walk with HIM in these Lenten Days! In this
coming week look at the ways St Patrick and
St Joseph did!

Discussion #6 in a continuing series:
Liturgy of the Word
The Liturgy of the Word is the best Bible study on
earth. Here, God speaks to each of us personally
through the inspired words of Scripture. The Bible
doesnt just talk about God. It is Gods own words
spoken in the words of men and women. And since
they are Gods words, they transcend time and space
and can speak to us today. The same Holy Spirit
who inspired the words of Scripture thousands of
years ago is still alive in our hearts today, prompting
us and guiding us to apply them to our lives. They
are, therefore, personal words spoken anew to the
heart of each individual at Mass.
Thats why three people may hear the same
reading but each be touched by God in a different
way. One might hear something that sheds light on
a challenge he or she is facing, while another person
might be inspired to grown in a certain virtue, and
still another may find comfort in a time of suffering.
As Vatican II taught, In the sacred books, the Father
who is in heaven meets His children with great love
and speaks with them (Dogmatic Constitution on
Divine Revelation [Dei Verbum], 21).
Just as the ancient Jews seem to have had a three
year cycle of readings that present the wide breadth
of sacred Scripture. In the Liturgy of the Word, we
hear from the Old Testament, the Psalms, te New
Testament, and the Gospels week after week. By
simply going to Mass each Sunday, Catholics
journey over and over again through salvation
history.

Prayer of Petition
Holy St. Anthony, you are the consolation of so many
people. We come to invoke your help, confident of
experiencing your goodness and power. Pray for us
to the Father of mercies that we may obtain the grac-
es we need for ourselves and for our loved ones.
(pause for your Personal Petitions)
True follower of St. Francis, put into our hearts the
flame of your love, that we may love our merciful Fa-
ther in heaven and our neighbors as ourselves.
Pray that we may fulfill the will of God and live the
way Jesus shows us in the Gospel. Be a guide for us
this day that we may recognize the opportunities
God gives us to be helping and caring.
Assist us in keeping the promises we made at our
Baptism. Help us to obtain the grace to walk in the
light of faith and to proclaim that faith by the way we
live. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
FIRST TUESDAY: (March 14)
Finding quiet time
St. Anthony, you found quiet time to retreat into pri-
vate communion with God to replenish your life with
new strength. Help me in the midst of my busy life to
seek the Spirits guiding presence within my heart.
