Abstract: Today, Indonesian music world is having a rapid
growth in many aspects, for example the genre
and the technique of making a song which are
used by the song writer. The development of
those aspects makes Indonesian music become
more various. The variety of Indonesian music is
also supported by the creativity of song writers
who are able to make a good song, including
bilingual song which is using mixing and
switching technique. One of bilingual song
writers who use this technique is Melly Goeslaw
because she wrote many beautiful songs which
are well accepted by the listener. Here the writer
is interested in conducting a study about code
mixing and code switching in Melly Goeslaws
song. The writer conducts a study entitled Code
Mixing and Code Switching Used in Melly
Goeslaws Songs because the writer finds that
Melly Goeslaw mixes and switches the language
used in many of her songs. There are two
problems that need to be analyzed, they are:
(1) what are the types of code switching used in
Melly Goeslaws songs? (2) What are the effects
of code mixing and code switching used in Melly
Goeslaws songs toward the listeners interest in
music? In this study, the writer uses qualitative
approach. The type of research is textual
analysis, since the writer analyzes the song
lyrics made by Melly Goeslaw and the answer of
questionnaire from the participant of the
research. The methods are interview and
questionnaire. This study reveals that there are
three (3) types of code switching used by Melly
Goeslaw in her songs, namely inter-sentential
code switching, intra-sentential code switching
and lexical borrowing. After analyzing the result
of the questionnaire, the writer concluded that
the use of code mixing and code switching has
an effect toward the listener interest in music.
After listening to bilingual song, the listeners
prefer to listen bilingual song than monolingual
song because it is more interesting and sounds
different from monolingual song. The writer
suggests for the next researcher to conduct a
study about code mixing and code switching in
other objects like novel, movie script or
conversation of bilingual or multilingual people.
