I- Determine whether the following are examples of Binomial

Experiment. Give your explanation why it is an example or not.
Write your answer on a manila paper.

1. Tossing a coin 20 times to see how many tails occur.

2. Asking 200 people if they watch ABC news.
3. Rolling a die to see if a 5 appears.

4. Tossing a coin a hundred times to see how many land on

heads.
5. Asking 100 people if they have ever been to Paris.
6. Telephone surveying a group of 200 people to ask if they
voted for George Bush.
7. Counting the average number of dogs seen at a veterinarians
office daily.
8. You take a survey of 50 traffic lights in a certain city, at 3
p.m., recording whether the light was red, green, or yellow at
that time.
9. You are at a fair, playing pop the balloon with 6 darts. There
are 20 balloons. 10 of the balloons have a ticket inside that
say win, and 10 have a ticket that says lose.
10. Asking 20 people how old they are.

II- Answer the following questions:

Step 1: Is there a fixed number of trials? If it has, what is this?

Answer:

Step 2: Are there only two outcomes? What are those?

Answer:

Step 3: Are the outcomes are independent to each other? Why?

Answer:

Step 4: Does the probability of success remain the same of each

trial? Determine each probability.

I- Find the mean, variance and standard deviation of the following binomial
experiment.

1. Find the mean and standard deviation for the number of girls in groups of
14 births using the binomial distribution formula.

2. Find the mean, variance, and standard deviation of the binomial

distribution with the given values of n and p. n=73 p=.7

3. A card is drawn from a standard deck for 30 times with replacement, and
the number of times a spade appears is recorded. Let X be a random
variable that gives the number of times k that a spade appears. Compute
the mean, variance, and standard deviation of the distribution for the
binomial variable X.

4. A card is picked at random 8 times, with replacement, from a standard

deck of 52 cards and the success of showing a face card is recorded. Find
the mean, variance, and standard deviation.

5. Compute the mean, variance, and standard deviation of the binomial

experiment with 20 trials given that the probability of success in each trail is
35%.

I- Find the probability of the following binomial functions.

1. A coin is tossed 10 times. What is the probability that exactly 6 heads will
occur.

1. Success = "A head is flipped on a single coin"

2. p = 0.5

3. q = 0.5

4. n = 10

5. x = 6

2. A die is rolled. Let landing on 6 be considered as a success and landing

on 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, be failures.

a. Find the probability of success.

b. Find the probability of failure.
c. If the experiment is repeated 10 times, find the P(X=7).

3. A coin is tossed 15 times. What is the probability that 10 heads appears?

4. John is answering a five-item true-or-false type test. If he guesses all the

answers on the test, what is the probability that he gets all items correctly?
