lesson?
Essential Understanding
What can you observe using a rain gauge and a wind sock?
Rationale
Students need to learn the inquiry process so they can apply it to their everyday lives.
Students also need to learn how to observe, measure and record weather data so in the
future they can make predictions about the weather.
Summative: Have the students answer the three Explain and Conclude questions on page
21 in their science notebooks.
1. What did you observe with the rain gauge? What did you observe with the
windsock?
2. What can you infer about the weather if a windsock is not moving?
3. Compare the data from all groups. Do you see any patterns for the places where a
windsock is and how strong the wind is?

What background
knowledge is necessary for The students must know what wind and rain are and their characteristics. The students
a student to successfully must also know how to measure using a centimeter ruler. I will ensure they have this
meet these objectives? knowledge by reviewing it before/during the lesson. We have been working on weather
for a few weeks now so they should know a great deal of information about this already.
What misconceptions
might students have about The students might begin measuring the rain gauge at 1 rather than 0. The students
this content? might place the rain gauge and windsock in areas where they wont see the weather
affect them.
Lesson Implementation
Teaching Methods
Modeling to show the students how the rain gauge is going to look and how to create
their windsocks.
Discussion of vocabulary and questions.
Independent work for the students to answer the Explain and Conclude questions
3 min measure weather conditions such as wind and rain and how
Students they change in one day.
4. Have the students read the BIQ and invite them to share their
5 min Both ideas about rainfall and wind speed.
5. Have the students say observe. Ask a student to read the
3 min sentence on page 18 out loud. Ask students for another word
Both or phrase that means the same as observe. (watch closely)
6. Ask How can tools help you observe? (Tools give more exact
2 min measurements. For example, use a thermometer to measure
how hot or cold something is.)
7. Repeat for infer and ask How can you use what you already
Both know to infer? (I infer when I use what I know and what I
observed to make a conclusion.)
3 min 8. Follow the steps on page 19 to create a class rain gauge.
Both 9. Have the supplies person distribute the materials to the class.
Both The students will decorate their windsocks. Then have the
7 min students create a tube out of their paper and tape/glue sticks.
10 Walk around and hole punch 4 holes in their wind socks about
min 2 cm from the top.
Both 10.Complete steps 3-5 on page 20. If the student chooses a
place that block the wind, ask Where would you place the
windsock to get an idea of how the wind in the area is
15 Student blowing today? (in an open, unsheltered area)
min 11.Have the students test the windsocks by holding them by the
Student end of the long string tightly.
12.Have the students have a discussion about how strong the
5 min Student wind is using the chart on page 20.
13.Students will copy(? If there is enough time.) and answer the
5 min Explain and Conclude questions on page21 in their science
notebooks.

Meeting your students If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
needs as people and as backgrounds of your students?
learners No matter where in the world you are, you will have experienced different
types of weather. Wind and rain are the most common weather that can be
found anywhere in the world.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
Students can create their own rain gauges and windsocks at their house to see
how much rain they are getting in their community and which way the wind is
blowing.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?
I will challenge them to answer the Think of Another Question on page 21.
What else would you like to know about observing with rain gauges and
windsocks?
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?
For the students who need additional language support, I will have someone
who speaks their language translate for them and I will allow them to write
their responses in their native language.
Accommodations (If
needed) J, JK, JS, C, S will have one to two paraprofessionals working with them to help with
