Leaves on the trees changing colour is a sure sign that
autumn is here, but it also has another significance; it is
Festival time.
The Ballan township is set to come alive with an
abundance of county flair, colour and good old fashioned
fun.
This year the Ballan Autumn Festival will celebrate Our
Pioneering Days along with the towns unique culture
and creativity.
The annual event will be held on Sunday March 19 and
will see the Main Street of Ballan lined with over 100 stalls
and food outlets.
The festival will have a full entertainment line up
alongside vintage cars and machinery, a grand street
parade and the popular wood chopping competition.
Inglis Street will be closed to vehicles for the day,
with one end of the street filled with amusement rides,
childrens activities and petting zoo, and the other end
hosting historic tour guides at the fully restored Ballan
Court House, with lots inbetween.
The tug-of-war competition is back after a long absence
from the festival and live music will channel its way
throughout the streets.

There will be games and entertainment that existed

team of volunteers that is the backbone of the Association
that makes the autumn festival possible.
In 2016, more than 8,000 people attended the event that
has been going, and growing, for over 40 years. Hard
working volunteers are behind this success.
The Ballan Autumn Festival will kick off at 9am and the
Opportunity shop (Stead St) and travels down the main
street, concluding at the Opportunity On Inglis Op Shop,
near Cowie Street.

As number plate theft in
the region continues to rise,
local police are urging the
community to lock down
their plates with one-way
screws.
Operation Safe Plate is a
program introduced by
Victoria Police and their
community partners to deter
thieves from stealing vehicle
registration plates.
The program sees the
existing screws attached to
vehicles replaced with one-
way security screws.
Ballan Police Stations
Officer in Charge, Sgt.
Michael Kearnes said
number plate theft was one
of the biggest volume crime
drivers for theft from motor
vehicle in the region.
This crime has a secondary
effect contributing to other
crimes including theft of
fuel from petrol stations,
burglaries, thefts and even
other thefts of and from
motor vehicles, he said.
Everybody has a vested
interest in reducing crime.
Through simple steps we
as a community can make
it harder for criminals to
commit crimes and thereby
prevent offending.
One of the largest factors
in criminal conduct is
opportunity. By reducing
the opportunity factor, we
can reduce crime generally
across many crime themes
such as theft, theft of motor
vehicles, theft from motor
vehicles and burglary.

A man who ripped facial
hair from a security guard
in an alcohol-fuelled attack
has been condemned by a
Ballarat Magistrate.
Matthew Mullane, of Bal-
lan, appeared in the Ballarat
Magistrates Court on Friday
(March 10) charged with un-
lawful assault, being drunk
in a public place and failing
to leave a licensed venue.
It was alleged the 22-year-
old had attended the Sham-
rock Hotel in Echuca on Oc-
tober 8 last year with three
friends, when a minor inci-
dent occurred on the dance
floor, resulting in two of his
friends being ejected from
the building.

Not guilty plea to murder

A Bacchus Marsh man has
pleaded not guilty to the
murder of 47-year-old Keith
Foggin, who went missing
around 18-months ago.
Christopher John Trotter
appeared in the Melbourne
Magistrates Court on
Wednesday (March 8), where
he entered the plea, denying
claims that he killed the Bac-
chus Marsh grandfather in
2015.
Mr Foggin was reported
missing on September 24,
2015 after his family, whom
he made regular contact
with, had not heard from
him in a number of days.
It is alleged that Foggin was
last seen at the accuseds
mechanic workshop in Mad-
dingley, where his vehicle
was being serviced.
The court heard that Mr
Foggin had planned to
travel to Queensland for
employment opportunities,
however, since his disap-
pearance, his bank account
and mobile phone have not
been accessed, and his be-
longings were left behind in
his vehicle.
His body has still not been
found.

The biologist said that a
small portion of DNA, be-
lieved to be the blood of
Mr Foggin, was discovered
on the leg of a table located
within the accuseds me-
chanic workshop during a
crime scene examination on
November 25, 2015.
The victims DNA was also
located in the canopy of a
white station wagon.
The biologist said Mr Fog-
gins DNA was taken from
a razor, found within his
vehicle, and compared with
the DNA of his mother and
daughter in order to find
a match with the samples
found at the crime scene.
However, Mr Hutton said a
small stain found inside the
workshop, which Mr Fog-
gin was known to attend,
could not qualify as direct
evidence of foul play.
It draws nothing more
than that Mr Foggin was
there, it does not show that
he was mortally injured.

account at the time of his

not a man of huge means, if
he had attempted to leave, he
would have taken his cloth-
ing and his toiletries with
him to Queensland. The ra-
zor used to sample his DNA
would be gone.
Mr Brown said Trotter had
told an elaborate web of
lies during police question-
ing, which pointed towards
a consciousness of guilt.
When the accused was
presented with evidence
that demonstrated a lie, he
would change his track and
create a new lie, he said.
A lesser lie was that [Mr
Foggin] wasnt upset about
his car not being ready, but
the police were called just af-
ter 8am that morning, show-
ing that he was upset.
Mr Brown said on the Sun-
day following Mr Foggins
disappearance, the accused
did not attend his usual
Church service and his mo-
bile phone was tracked to Mt
Blackwood at the time.
That is an area of natural
bushland, if a body was dis-
posed of it would be difficult
to find, he said.
There is no reason why
[Trotter] would be there
when he would usually be at
Church.
Following Trotters plea in-
dication, an application for
bail was refused by Magis-
trate Lance Martin.
Trotter was remanded in
custody and reappeared
in the Melbourne Supreme
Court the following day.
In a short directions hear-
ing, Mr Hutton refuted al-
legations that his client had
been tracked to Mt Black-
wood area, stating that the
mobile phone tower was still
within range from the Trot-
ter familys home.
The familys phones, while
located in the house in Bac-
chus Marsh, often ping off
the cell tower in Blackwood.

In a bizarre turn of events,
East Ward Councillor Tonia
Dudzik has offered her res-
ignation to Apple FM as the
result of a council decision
but the station is not aware
of it.
In a post that appeared on
her facebook page last week,
Cr Dudzik offered her res-
ignation from the station,
where she is a presenter.
Last night I offered to step
down from my role as a pre-
senter at Apple 98.5fm radio
because I believe they were
disadvantaged recently by
a decision made by Council
because of my volunteer-
ing role at apple 98.5fm, Cr
Dudziks post read.
The decision referred to was
voted on at a council meet-
ing, which saw councillors
decide to offer Apple FM a
lease at the Darley Civic and
Community Hub at a com-
mercial rental rate, instead of
the peppercorn agreement

had nothing to do with Cr

In July of 1976, a suitcase filled with one-cent
coins was carted across the main street of
Ballan in order to be deposited at the bank.
These coins contributed to a major fundraising
campaign that spanned over 72-years and aided
in the establishment of the health care service
that is Ballan District Health and Care today.
The story of the suitcase, alongside decades
of many more, has been written into a book
commemorating BDH&Cs 50th anniversary.
People with the Right Spirit explores
BDH&Cs 50-years of service and 72-years of
fundraising through photographs and tales as
old as time.
In 2016, a group of volunteers collected many
years worth of annual reports, newspaper
archives and photographs and linked them
together with interviews with past and present
staff, patients and board members.
BDH&C chief executive, Wayne Weaire said
the rich history book documented the great
story and achievement that BDH&C represents

on Sunday March 19.

Technology ruining the planet

One of the beliefs we all
seem to share these days is
the belief in technology. This
is a recent phenomenon.
While we see technology
everywhere around us, our
not too distant ancestors
would have been amazed
at the things we take for
granted. One of the key ide-
as promoted by our corpora-
tions, and increasingly by
our governments, is the idea
that technology will save us
from this environment crisis
we are currently facing. Our
federal government, for ex-
ample, is talking once again
about clean coal, as is the
new American president.
And people believe in such
a product?
In Laudato Si, Pope Francis
environmental letter from a
couple of years ago is a cri-
tique of technology as a neu-
tral tool for society. Technol-
ogy, he argues, is far from
neutral. In fact, technology
tends to create a framework
that ends up conditioning
people and limiting their
possible options along lines
dictated by the most eco-
nomically and politically
powerful.
Technology tends to absorb
everything into its ironclad
logic, and those who are sur-
rounded with technology
know full well that it moves
forward in the final analysis
neither for profit nor for the
well-being of the human
race, that in the most radi-
cal sense of the term power
is its motive a lordship
over all. Technology isnt of
itself evil, but it has a logic
that makes us less human,
diminishing our capacity
to make decisions, a more
genuine freedom and the
space for each ones alterna-
tive creativity.
As Pope Francis writes, the
specialisation which be-
longs to technology makes
it difficult to see the larger
picture. The fragmentation
of knowledge proves help-
ful for concrete applications,
and yet it often leads to a
loss of appreciation for the
whole, for the relationships
between things, and for
the broader horizon, which
then becomes irrelevant.
This very fact makes it hard
to find adequate ways of
solving the more complex
problems of todays world,
particularly those regard-
ing the environment and the
poor; these problems cannot
be dealt with from a single
perspective or from a single
set of interests.
Here are some technolo-
gies we take for granted that
are ruining the planet and
our future.
Increase in Travel: We
travel more and also, dare I
say it, unnecessarily some-
times. We go on tours round
the world and most of these
use fossil fuels. In the not too
distant past travel was slow-
er and required more time.
Now we can zip anywhere
and everywhere in no time
at all. All of this travel is
thanks to technology. I have
to put my hand up here as I
use a car and do some flying
at times. Is such technology
a good thing or a bad thing?
Excess power consump-
tion: Power consumption in
our societies today is much
higher than in the not too
distant past. For this we can
thank technology. We use
power every day in many
ways in education, in the
work place and at home.
We seem to need television
and smart phones, to men-
tion just two, to survive.
Our ancestors did not need
electricity through-out the
day. They needed it for night
lighting. Now we need it 24
hours and in all the seasons.
While we are beginning to
see the benefits of renewable
energy, unfortunately, ac-
cording to the best guesses,
the movement to these pow-
er sources away from fossil
fuel will be too late to save
us or the planet.
We generate more waste:
We contribute a large
amount of toxic waste in
the name of technological
updating. For example, all
we need to do is go to one
of our supermarkets and see
the amount of plastic that is
used as packaging. Or when
we upgrade our laptops
where do the old ones go?
Excess Deforestation: In
the name of development,
comfort and the like we have
widespread deforestation.
We make vast clearings of
bush in a short time frame
because of our technological
advances with ever bigger
machines doing the work for
us. The same goes for roads
through what we used call
wilderness. It is definitely
affecting nature. We can see
rapid extinction of many
species of plants, birds and
animals due to widespread
deforestation.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

The Centre meet was held last Friday evening with a
modified program conducted. Over the weekend Bacchus
Marsh was represented by 14 athletes in 24 events at the

Albert Park. William Lalor claimed a Silver medal in the
Under 12 Discus with a throw of 32.67 metres. Jarvis Miles

Avenue finished top of the ladder after Round 18 and took
on Central Wendouree who finished second. The reward for
the winners of this match was a direct passage to this years
Grand Final.
Avenue didnt start the game well with three rinks quickly
giving their opposition valuable shots at the start from
which Avenue did not recover. Stewart Wilsons rink was the
standout on the day, quickly establishing a solid lead, which
they were able to maintain for the entire game, running out
winners by 10 shots. Of the other rinks, Mike Roberts rink
fared best despite giving up a 3-shot lead after 19 ends to go
down by three shots. Di Hardiments rink simply had a rare
off day, dropping 13 shots in the final five ends to go down
by 24 shots, whilst Ray Humphreys rink suffered a similar
fate, losing by 11 shots.

Championship Day to be held on March 25.

The opposition jumped out of the starting gate establishing
an early overall lead, on a very good playing surface.
At the afternoon break, Avenue only trailed by 12 shots
and was hopeful of a second half turnaround. The margin
between the two teams ballooned out to 25 shots shortly after
play resumed, however Avenue mounted a comeback over
the concluding ends to at least have a chance with a few ends
to play. Led by Mal Smiths rink who were trailing 3-18 after
12 ends they surged home picked up valuable shots in the
last 8 ends to end up a draw. A similar tale was seen on Don
Lemins rink, trailing 15-17 after 20 ends they picked up 8
shots over the last 5 ends to win by 6 shots.
Unfortunately, the other two rinks couldnt complete the
same fightback, losing by three shots and 14 shots.
The loss finishes the season for this division, and despite the
result their season can be regarded as successful.

Seniors
The Darley Lions have fin-
ished in second spot on the
Ballarat Cricket Association
First XI ladder after defeat-
ing East Ballarat by 151 runs
in their final round encoun-
ter at Russell Square.
The Lions will face expe-
rienced finals campaigners
Mount Clear in their semi-
final at Alfredton Oval this
Saturday and Sunday in
their first taste of finals ac-
tion in years.
Darley booked their place
in the semi final with a
solid all-round performance
against East Ballarat, scoring
8/336 against the Hawks in
the first week of their game,
then bowling them out for
185 in just 39.3 overs in the
second week.
Wickets were shared
amongst the Darley bowlers,
with Matthew Cape (2/10
off eight overs), Hayden Ja-
mieson and Sri Lankan spin
twins Hasitha Wickrama-
singhe and Sajitha Rupas-
inghe all taking two wickets
each, with Jake Wilkie chip-
ping in with a wicket also, in
a bowling performance that
will give the Lions a massive
amount of confidence going
into next weeks semi final
against a Mount Clear side
that bested the Lions in their
only meeting back in Round
4.
Darleys Second XI capped
off a disappointing season
with their second win for
the season in the final round,
defeating finals-bound Wen-
douree by five wickets at
Darley Park.
After dismissing the Red
Caps for 122 last week,
Darley re-commenced their
innings at 0/40 on day two
to work their way to 7/148
when stumps were called at
the afternoon tea break.
Ben Longhurst top-scored
for the Lions with 33 be-
fore retiring hurt, with
Hamish Wheeler making
25 and young guns Jordan
Monaghan and Mitch Ward
tuning themselves up for
junior finals next week with
26 and 20 respectively to end
their senior seasons.
Darleys Third XI fell short
of a season-ending victory,
going down to East Ballarat
by 50 runs.
After the Hawks knocked
up 295 last week, helped
largely by 179 off the bat of
Paul Rose, the Lions started
the chase well with a 104
run opening partnership be-
tween Daniel Hynes (27) and
captain Liam Jordan, who
scored his first half-century
of the season with a cap-

a high with a comfortable
victory over Lucas in their
final-round one-day match.
Galeas unbeaten innings of
exactly 100, which included
seven fours and three sixes,
helped the Lions reach 4/248
off their 40 overs, with Liam
Cornford contributing 40 of
a 71 run third wicket part-
nership with Galea, and
Alan Shea helping Galea
reach his century with 24
runs as part of an unbeaten
88 run partnership for the
fifth wicket.
After opening bowler Rick
James struck twice during
his eight over spell, remov-
ing both Lucas openers to
record figures of 2/19, Steven
Cornford tore through the
middle order, taking 4/17
off his eight overs to ensure
Lucas could only reach 7/134
off their 40 overs, ending
Darleys season on a high
after the disappointment of
missing finals by just one

Cox who played his best in-
nings of not only the season
but of his career as he retired
on 50, his first ever half-
century which helped Dar-

into their semi-final against

Swords that they put to the
sword only two weeks ago.
