b. Instructional Steps:

Teacher will explain to students that we will build a zoo in our classroom and that the zoo needs
different kinds of wild animals. She will tell students that in order to build our zoo we need to know how
to add and subtract but before we can start we need to create our wild animals and each student will
represent one of the following wild animals: Giraffe, lion, elephant, monkey, and rhino.

The students will be divided into five groups and each group will create a face mask of a wild animal. The
students will color, cut and glue the mask onto a wooden stick.

The teacher will project on the smartboard one addition and one subtraction word problems and will
show them as follow:
The zoo needs two lions and there are five. If the zoo needs only two lions how many lions are left? The
teacher will be as the zoo keeper and will model how to solve the word problem with the students and
justify their answer by explaining their thinking. As the students solve the problem, two of the lions
mask students will come to the carpet imitating the roaring of a lion.
The zoo needs three giraffes and two monkeys. How many wild animals does the zoo keeper (teacher)
need for the zoo? Students will model how to solve the word problem and justify their answers by
explaining their thinking. As students walk to the carpet, they will imitate the sound of each animal.

The teacher will divide the five groups into two groups and each group will create a word problem and
will present to the class.

c. Formative Assessment:

Teacher will assess students on participation and questioning their understanding.

d. Summative Assessment:

Teacher will give five red connecting cubes and five blue connecting cubes and student will
decompose the number five in three different ways.

e. Closing: Ideas to present/display student learning:

Think pair share: students will briefly discuss Pictures and videos
how we use addition and subtraction in our
every day life.
