Creating an Immersive Photosphere through

Google Cardboard Camera on Android Smartphones

Instructional Strategy for Pre-Instructional, Assessment, and Follow-Through
Activities

Pre-Instructional Activities:
Motivation: A facilitator will assess the students prior knowledge of photospheres and
introduce its various uses for recreational activities. They will be shown various
examples of works they can create with photosphere and how it can be utilized with
modern VR technology.

Objectives: This introduction to photospheres will serve as a proper gateway to

demonstrating the practical uses VR technology has as well as grant proper
opportunities for students to create visually unique works to assist with their
assignments in the future. This will also give them an opportunity to utilize their
smartphones for creative tasks they can use for educational and recreational purposes.

Student Groupings and Media Selections: Students will be placed in groups of 2-3
(depending on how many of them have access to smart phones). They will work in
their classroom where a Wi-Fi access point will allow them to use the internet without
consuming data.

Assessment:
Pretest: No pretest will be administered.

Practice tests: No practice test will be administered.

Posttest: Students will install Google Cardboard Camera, create a photosphere on their
smartphones (preferably Android smartphone device, but alternate devices will be
sufficient), and upload it online where the instructor can access it and provide
feedback.

Student Groupings and Media Selections: Students will have their own smartphone
devices (if not, they can work together in pairs with another student that has one).
Students will also have access to a Wi-Fi point to access the internet and upload it to a
designated website for the course.

Follow-Through Activities:
Memory Aid: Students will be given a written tutorial with brief details on the entire
process.

Transfer: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to take photospheres
independently and upload them online. They will use their smartphones to take creative
photospheres and demonstrate their understanding of the proper methods in taking
photospheres in unique locations. They will upload these photospheres online and
share them on social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and/or Pinterest.

Student Groupings and Media Selections: Taking new photospheres and uploading the
photospheres on social media must be done on a self-guided basis. This skill can be
accomplished in any location where they may have access to internet/Wi-Fi.

Writing Instructional Content Presentation and Student Participation

Objectives #1.0: Installing Google Cardboard Camera on the Android

Smartphone
Content Presentation: Live trained facilitator/PowerPoint/video
Content:
1.Open Google Play Store App and search for Cardboard Camera
2.Install the app by pressing the install button (Note: The installation process may
take up to a minute depending on the connectivity of your internet access)
3. If there were not any errors, the app is correctly installed and you can open the
Google Cardboard Camera app.

Examples: Facilitator will show a movie/ppt displaying each step with an explanation
per each step. Students will follow along with their Android smartphones.

Student Groupings and Media Selections: Students will need an android smartphone
device with a stable internet connection for this task. Therefore, a one to one ratio with
an android smartphone per student is required.

Student Participation:
Practice Items and Activities: Students will follow along with the teacher through the
PowerPoint/video presentation. They will log on to their phones, press the install
button, and download the app on their devices based on the instructions given.

Feedback: If the students successfully installed the app on their phone, they will be
able to open the app and begin the setup process. The facilitator will be in the room
while the students show their progress on the phone for feedback. They will show the
instructor that they have the app installed on their phone.

Student Groupings and Media Selections: Students will need an android smartphone
device with a stable internet connection for this task. Therefore, a one to one ratio with
an android smartphone per student is required.

Objectives #2.0 Setting Up Google Cardboard Camera

Content Presentation: Live trained facilitator/PowerPoint/video
Content:
1. Open the Cardboard Camera app on your smartphone (Note: There should be a new
icon on your smartphone UI)
2. Follow the instructions on the setup for Google Cardboard Camera app by pressing
next
3. Read instructions for adding sound on your Google Cardboard Camera and press
next
4. Read instructions pertaining to Your Memories on VR and press next.
5. Read Cardboard viewer takes you there and press done.

They will continue to press the next button by
following the instructions after opening the Google Cardboard Camera app. They will
continue to follow the instruction and press until they are able to access the Google
Cardboard Camera UI.

Feedback: If the students were successful with the setup process, they will be able to
interact with the apps main UI where they can manipulate the settings and take
photospheres. The facilitator will be in the room while the students show their progress
on the phone for feedback. They will show the instructor that they can access the
Google Cardboard Camera UI after the setup process on their phones.

Student Groupings and Media Selections: Students will need an android smartphone
device with a stable internet connection for this task. Therefore, a one to one ratio with
an android smartphone per student is required.

Objectives #3.0 Properly Taking Photospheres

Content Presentation: Live trained facilitator/PowerPoint/video
Content:
1.Open the Google Cardboard Camera app (presuming it is not already open)
2.Press the Camera button on the apps UI
3. Hold the camera steady in a horizontal manner in front of you and rotate it 360
degrees.
4.Your photosphere is then complete
Examples: Facilitator will show a movie/ppt displaying each step with an explanation
per each step. Students will follow along with their Android smartphones.

Student Groupings and Media Selections: Students will need an android smartphone
device with a stable internet connection for this task. Therefore, a one to one ratio with
an android smartphone per student is required.

Student Participation:
Practice Items and Activities: Students will follow along with the teacher through the
PowerPoint/video presentation. They will practice taking photospheres by following
along the proper gestures and steps. They will take photospheres in the classroom as
practice. They will accomplish this either independently or in pairs by standing up,
pressing the camera button, holding it steady horizontally, and rotate 360 degrees.

Feedback: If students were successful in taking a photosphere, they will show their
