CONCLUSION

Penetrating with a fast glance the reactions of the text of Balamand, we


see again why the Orthodox Church stopped the dialogue for a seven-
year period. However, except the Orthodox Church, the Roman-
Catholics and the Uniates accepted the agreement of Balamand, and
underlined the positive repercussions of text. The conclusions that
follow lead us to enlight the opinions of the involved parts of the
dialogue.

1. For the Roman-Catholics, the text of Balamand, completes the


agreements in the previous texts, and imports the Uniates in the dialogue
as equal as the other two. In other words, the dialogue from bilateral
becomes tripartite. They condemn the Uniatism as a way and method of
proselytism but they give the right to the Uniates to exist and to act
because of the communion with Rome.
2. According to the Uniates, the text of Balamand is judged
absolutely positive. It is the chance the Uniates could have to be
recognized as official part in the dialogue and as an ecclesiastical
formation that draws his existence from the communion with Rome.
There are also some reactions from fountamentalists Uniates that they do
not accept the forgiveness and the communication with the Orthodox
Church.
3.From the Orthodox side we do not have only one opinion. A lot
of Orthodox theologians accept that this text is "the best that could be
written that moment", and they are advocates of the acceptance of the
Uniates in the theological dialogue as a way to solve the existing problem
(cf. Matsoukas, Efesoy Hrysostomos, Ericson, ect.). On the other hand,
there are theologians who claim that the text of Balamand degrades the
Orthodox theology, blunts the differences with the Roman-Catholics,
betrays the Orthodoxy and of course vindicates the existence of the
Uniates instead of condemning them. (cf. Father Zisis, Father Romanides,
The Holy Community of Mount Athos, prof. Patsavos ect).
4. According to my opinion, the agreement of Balamand was a
false move of Orthodox delegation. Because of the absence of many
Orthodox churches from the Mixed Committee, it was the best occasion
to sign an unfriendly agreement for the Orthodoxy. The acceptance of
theory of the"Sister Churches " is judged unacceptable because only the
Orthodox churches have the right to call each other "sisters".
Simultaneously, if we recognize the Roman-Catholic church as a "Sister
church", we recognize also the Uniates as Brothers and their Church as
Sister, so the rejection of Uniatism remains only verbal. The deviation of
Orthodox delegation from the Orthodox ecclesiology and Soteriology and
the acceptance of the Branch Theory, are the most highlighted in the
text. For these theological errors, that are simultaneously pointed out also
by Orthodox theologians, the text of Balamand, at our opinion, is
temporally unacceptable, because the problem of Uniatism remains
unsolved. We propose therefore, the condemnation of text and the re-
approach of the subject in that manner that we can continue the Bilateral
Theological Dialogue.
